Whenever I hear that '80s song "My Obsession," i think of a musical montage from "Get a Life" in which Chris Elliott is stalking a scientist - he keeps showing up under her couch cushions, on her microscope slide, etc.

the lou reed song in 'trainspotting' will always make me think of 'trainspotting'.

it's funny you didn't mention r.e.m.'s "stand" which was the Get a Life theme song.
that stalker episode is funny, cause there's some meta-stalking involved.

I can't hear "Moving in Stereo" by the Cars without thinking of Phoebe Cates' unspeakably divine upper torso, courtesy of "Fast Times at Ridgemont High."

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 13 March 2003 16:00 (twenty-three years ago)

additionally that carl orff music in 'badlands' will always make me think of 'badlands,' even when it's used in other movies (like 'ratcatcher').

'the stranger song' by leonard cohen - i had heard this a million times before i ever saw 'maccabe and mrs. miller' but now i will probably always think of warren beatty riding through a snowy, hazy american frontier. or at least some sense of that graint vilmos zsigmond cinematography.....

'all you need is love' always makes me think of the last episode of 'the prisoner'.

j fail (cenotaph), Thursday, 13 March 2003 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

'Can't take my eyes off you' by Andy Williams - the scene around the pool table in 'The Deerhunter'.

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 13 March 2003 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

'tuesday's gone' by lynyrd skynyrd reminds me of the end of the keg party at the moon tower in dazed and confused.

i don't think i've heard that song in the last 8 years without saying "keeeeeeg's empty".

otto midnight, Thursday, 13 March 2003 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

For the life of me I cannot hear "I'll Be There For You" by the Rembrandts and not think of "Friends."

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 13 March 2003 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

"Pay to Cum" by Bad Brains always reminds me of the "Mohawk Night" scene in Scorcese's "After Hours" (I'm going to see how many times I can mention this brilliant film today in as many threads as possible. You've been warned.)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 13 March 2003 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh Marty: "Jumpin' Jack Flash" (Mean Streets), and "Gimme Shelter", "Jump Into The Fire", "What Is Life?" and "Then He Kissed Me" (Goodfellas)

Others:"Moving In Stereo" (Fast Times...good call Alex!), "Everybody Want Some!" (Better Off Dead, that scene with the hamburger is genius), and "My Cherie Amour" (Almost Famous, after Penny OD's and is being resusitated)

Charles McCain, Thursday, 13 March 2003 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't hear "Inna Gadda Da Vida" without thinking: "Manhunter"
I can't hear "Goodbye Horses" without thinking of Buffalo Bill tucking in his bait'n'tackle and asking himself "Would you fuck me?" in "Silence of the Lambs"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 13 March 2003 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

The intrusmental bit at the end of "Layla" will forever remind me of the mopping up scene in "Goodfellas."

TMFTML (TMFTML), Thursday, 13 March 2003 16:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm really not sure why this is, but I can't hear the whistling part of Billy Joel's "The Stranger" without thinking of this crap TV movie called "the Last Dinosaur" from the late 70's/early 80's. Anyone remember it?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 13 March 2003 16:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Or the "instrumental" bit. Gah.

TMFTML (TMFTML), Thursday, 13 March 2003 16:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Morphine's "Cure For Pain" always takes me back to the staggering Homicide: Life On the Street episode it was used in. Fucking best use of music in a show ever.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 13 March 2003 16:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Another one:in "The Dead Pool" (the last Dirty Harry movie) Jim Carey plays the rock singer who gets killed during a video shoot. The video? His character's new single "Welcome To The Jungle"! Carey did a better Axl than Axl with that one.

Charles McCain, Thursday, 13 March 2003 16:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I loved _The Last Dinosaur_ when i was 7, Alex. Rubber suits ahoy!

"Comanche" by The Revels, made memorable in _Pulp Fiction_. You know the scene.

Though somehow i've managed to divorce "Miserlou" from that movie, but "Comanche" is permanently welded to it.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Thursday, 13 March 2003 16:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Was that Baby The Last Dinosaur? I think I remember that one.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 13 March 2003 16:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Whenever I hear "Into the Groove" I think of Desperately Seeking Susan, cause my friends David and Clark and Bald Robert from the "Beautiful" video are in that scene at Danceteria. And I remember the dorky goth guy from back then, too. But was "Into the Groove" actually played in that scene in the movie, or was it just the video? I can't remember.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 13 March 2003 17:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, it was definitely in that scene from the movie. Great scene.

I just realized - despite all the music videos I've seen in my life, I don't think there's a single song that makes me automatically think of the video. But that can't be right. More likely, they ALL do, in some subliminal way.

Sam Jeffries (samjeff), Thursday, 13 March 2003 17:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't hear "Inna Gadda Da Vida" without thinking: "Manhunter"

I can't hear that song without thinking of the excellent performance of it in the Simpsons. "In The Garden Of Eden, by I. Ron Butterfly!"

'all you need is love' always makes me think of the last episode of 'the prisoner'.

I think of that same episode whenever I hear "Dem Bones".

Chriddof (Chriddof), Thursday, 13 March 2003 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't listen to Elliot Smith's "Needle in the Hay" anymore without thinking of the scene in "The Royal Tenenbaums."

T. Weiss (Timmy), Thursday, 13 March 2003 18:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't listen to the Rolling Stones "Between The Buttons" album without thinking of the scene in the tent in "The Royal Tenenbaums", even though they got the songs out of order ("She Smiled Sweetly" is before "Cool, Calm, & Collected";not "Ruby Tuesday"). Still I think it's really neat when theshow someone listening to an album in a scene, and the music takes over like you are there listening too.

Charles McCain, Thursday, 13 March 2003 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

"Sister Christian" = Boogie Nights; "Codeine" = Boys Don't Cry; "Rubber Biscuit" = Mean Streets; Richard Strauss & Gyorgi Ligeti = 2001; "The End" & Wagner = Apocalypse Now.

Scorsese is so great at using popular music.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 13 March 2003 19:02 (twenty-three years ago)

No Horace, you're thinking of _Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend_, featuring William "Greatest American Hero" Katt. The one Alex and i were thinking of came out in '76 or '77.

"Believe It or Not" shouldn't be mentioned in this thread. Oops. Too late.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Thursday, 13 March 2003 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

The instrumental bit at the end of "Layla" will forever remind me of the mopping up scene in "Goodfellas."

Dude, this is exactly what I was gonna say. Wow.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 13 March 2003 19:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters by Elton John will eternally remind me of Almost Famous.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Thursday, 13 March 2003 21:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Fairest of the Seasons, Nico for Royal Tennebaums (the only time I've liked G. Paltrow). Lowrider, Dazed and Confused. Ooooh, I can't hear the Sundays "Wild Horses" w/o thinking of Marky Mark molesting Tracy Flick in Fear. Oh and the Creation "Making Time" for Rushmore.

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 13 March 2003 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't hear "Rock Me Amadeus" without thinking of "Stop This Planet of the Apes, I Want to Get Off," from the Simpsons. "Dr. Zaeus, Dr. Zaeus..."

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 13 March 2003 21:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Steve Miller-"The Joker" from the Simpsons "The Way We Was" ep.
Homer-"Some people call me MAUUURICE WAAAH WAH"

Charles McCain, Thursday, 13 March 2003 22:23 (twenty-three years ago)

the end of Fight Club ruined that Pixies song for me

Most of the Rushmore soundtrack falls into this category, but the movie used the music so well, it's forgivable, in context.

and the Simpsons make me LIKE those songs more - ever hear Homer do Radar Love?? "said my baby called me on the telephone" and he mimes a telephone - laughed for days. and singing Smoke on the Water, talking about how he's hungry for a candy bar and thinks he'll eat a Mounds.

oh and i HATE that fucking car commercial where all the yuppies are singing my favorite Faces song (also in Rushmore) "Ooh La La"

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 13 March 2003 23:34 (twenty-three years ago)

The kid in Billy Elliott jumping up and down on his bed in slow motion to "Cosmic Dancer".

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 13 March 2003 23:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Rolling Stones' "Tell Me (You're Coming Back)" from Mean Streets

Roy Orbison's "In Dreams" - at Ben's in Blue Velvet

Rough Trade's "High School Confidential" - The truly strange football stadium scene in The Adjuster

The Byrds' "Wasn't Born to Follow" - the valley/river scene in Easy Rider

J.J. Cale's "You Keep Me Hanging On" from My Best Friend's Girl (french movie) - fucking great scene

"Build Me Up Buttercup" - end of There's Something About Mary

Tom Waits' "Innocent When You Dream" - end of Smoke

Stealers Wheel's "Stuck in the Middle of You - take a guess

I usually don't like the ones nowadays where it's the cast singing a popular song together (e.g. "Say a Little Prayer for You" in that Julia Roberts/wedding movie) or singing along with the song. More often than not it comes across smug and calculated.
