Classic or Dud?

Kelly, Thursday, 13 March 2003 19:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic, both of em

g (graysonlane), Thursday, 13 March 2003 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, looks like they have combined them into one set now. Anyone know if it is remastered? The sound on the original HP 1 & 2 CDs is a little harsh. Hit Parade 2 originally came with a bonus disc of radio sessions of all the HP non cover songs too i think.

g (graysonlane), Thursday, 13 March 2003 21:55 (twenty-three years ago)

according to a note on the cinerama site they have been remastered apparently

g (graysonlane), Thursday, 13 March 2003 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

classic, despite the arguable crassness of the initial scheme. But, both resulting discs are chock fulla great tracks and great covers.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 13 March 2003 22:06 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah but it was supposed to be ironically crass

g (graysonlane), Thursday, 13 March 2003 22:11 (twenty-three years ago)

totally classic, although i'm not a fan of many of the cover versions

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 13 March 2003 22:36 (twenty-three years ago)

classic, if only for how annoyed people got by songs like "go go dancer" and "come play with me" crashing the top 20 / top 10. bruno brookes got utterly fed up every time he had to announce a new wedding present entry in the chart rundown.

agree that most of the cover versions are shockingly bad though...

kieron, Thursday, 13 March 2003 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

there's only one cover i out-and-out hate, and no prizes for guessing.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 13 March 2003 22:47 (twenty-three years ago)

agree that most of the cover versions are shockingly bad though...

You guys are so harsh! What about their cover of "Cattle & Cane"? What about their rendition of "Falling" by Julee Cruise?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 13 March 2003 22:49 (twenty-three years ago)

What about their cover of "Cattle & Cane"?

AAAAAAARGHHH kill kill!!!! Courtney Love might have punched Gedge for knowing Steve Albini, I'd punch him for this atrocity masquerading as a cover version

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 13 March 2003 22:51 (twenty-three years ago)

yup, i think i've mentioned this before too, but their version of "c&c" is verging on the criminal. sorry a.

kieron, Thursday, 13 March 2003 22:52 (twenty-three years ago)

no, the covers are G*R*A*T*E: Theme From Shaft, Step Into Christmas, Cattle & Cane, Chant Of The Ever Circling Skeletal Family, etc.

total winner.

I think those singles are the last Wedding Present thing I love.

does anyone remember the time they appeared on TOTP dressed as Altern8? or when they wore t-shirts saying SH on the front in the same typeface as the JA in James?

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 13 March 2003 23:11 (twenty-three years ago)

As I said before, I think I might prefer their version of Cattle & Cane to the original. Aaron never did explain what his thing about 'memory wastes' was!

I never bought the actual singles and I still don't own the 2nd part of it. 'Blue Eyes' is still headwrenchingly good.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 14 March 2003 00:20 (twenty-three years ago)

why must you people repeatedly say these horrible things? from now on i'm staying away from any thread that might involve slagging Cattle and Cane because i don't need the grief.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 14 March 2003 00:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Search: "Blue Eyes", "Come Play With Me", "No Christmas", "Flying Saucer" on Top Of The Pops not on record, maybe "California", can't remember anything about 8-10 but I think one of them was good.

Destroy: most of the covers, "Silver Shortzzzzz", maybe "Queen Of Outer Space"

Tom (Groke), Friday, 14 March 2003 11:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Also search: Merry Christmas - War Is Over in the Melody Maker ;)

Tom (Groke), Friday, 14 March 2003 11:52 (twenty-three years ago)

'Queen Of Outer Space' is perhaps my favourite. I love mentalist love songs.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 14 March 2003 12:29 (twenty-three years ago)

"I think those singles are the last Wedding Present thing I love."

Massively agree, DV. Anything after this (and I did buy some of it) just wasn't the same and neither were the gigs. I thought "Blue Eyes" was just odd when they released it, but it became my favourite WP song. I want to stick up for the covers as well - the Close Lobsters one is proper.

Johhny John, Friday, 14 March 2003 12:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought it was a good song DV but the grunged-up treatment of it really annoyed me then and probably still would.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 14 March 2003 13:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic - I wish i would've collected the singles as they came out -- anybody know the statistic on how this series of singles all charted in the top 10 (or something) and became the only act ever to chart in every month of the year or 12 times in one year, or something or other?

christoff (christoff), Friday, 14 March 2003 15:07 (twenty-three years ago)

i kept quite a few of the singles. Boing was great mosh fodder, and Come Play With Me is still one of my favourite WP songs EVAH. good video too as i recall (not that i ever saw any other WP videos)

i went to see them on the tour that promoted these releases. this was the time i was spotted by my pupils (the year i was a teacher)

Alan (Alan), Friday, 14 March 2003 15:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Elvis Presley had done it before I think Chriddof.

I remember hearing that Paul Gambacc1ni was LIVID that his charts had been so traduced, much more annoyed than Bruno Brookes.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 14 March 2003 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

fuck him.

California is a nice song too.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 14 March 2003 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Steve Harley said WP's "Come Up & See Me" was way better than C Rebel orig!

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 14 March 2003 15:42 (twenty-three years ago)

although, hang on, that was on another EP wasn't it (4 Songs? '91?) - not part of the Hit Parade series.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 14 March 2003 15:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Gambaccini. I'm surprised he was bothered, in fact I'd imagine him thinking it was a bit of a wheeze. I saw him in Gosh once, in the downstairs bit.

yes Come up and See me wasn't in Hit Parade, it was a double-a with the single of Corduroy.

Alan (Alan), Friday, 14 March 2003 15:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, that's it, it was something that only Elvis had done; pretty impressive anyways. -- thanks for the hip check, Dom.

christoff (christoff), Friday, 14 March 2003 15:48 (twenty-three years ago)

california california!

alice, Saturday, 15 March 2003 03:36 (twenty-three years ago)

although gambo relented to the extent the weddoes got a big picture in the "guinness book of hit singles" or whatever for having equalled elvis' record.

i agree that "let's make some plans" is grebt, but then so is the original - the point is that i think the wedding present have done many brilliant covers, but i just don't think these 12 necessarily had that much 2commend them...
