My computer skills suck, as does the Ozzy cover in question.

Charles McCain, Thursday, 13 March 2003 23:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Looking back at that Coup album cover now, it's amazing they were about to use it, even before 9/11.

Kill the office workers, all right!

Sam Jeffries (samjeff), Thursday, 13 March 2003 23:22 (twenty-three years ago)

i LIKE that Chili Peppers cover!!

That Blind Faith album cover has bugged me since childhood.

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 13 March 2003 23:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Blind Faith is bad, but Scorpions' "Virgin Killers" is far far worse!!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 13 March 2003 23:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, that coup album would have annoyed me even in a non-9/11 world. Typical dunderheaded politics.

Looking back at that Coup album cover now, it's amazing they were about to use it, even before 9/11.
Kill the office workers, all right!

Oy. They were obv using WTC as a symbol of capitalism, not as a place where people worked (the same can be said about Osama and that is kinda disturbing, but they did it SYMBOLICALLY)
Would you rather them hold up a placard that says "capitalism" and blow that up?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 13 March 2003 23:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Um, being artists, I'm sure they could come up with many other "symbols" that don't imply lots of people being killed.

Better yet - how about an image where they're *building* a glorious Communist solidarity movement or something?

Blowing stuff up rocks! Radical politics = violent symbolism = kewl!

Sam Jeffries (samjeff), Thursday, 13 March 2003 23:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, I'm not saying I agree w/them AT ALL, but they were trying to make an impact (no pun intended) and rile people's feathers. Mission accomplishe, it appears.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 13 March 2003 23:43 (twenty-three years ago)

this has to be a contender...

cover aside, that Coup album is pretty good.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 13 March 2003 23:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow I'd never seen that Paris cover.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 13 March 2003 23:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Rough, eh?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 13 March 2003 23:51 (twenty-three years ago)

What's especially sad is that he's doing it to generate controversy. Self-promotion!

Sam Jeffries (samjeff), Thursday, 13 March 2003 23:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Plus, it's a particularly bad symbol, because sending in plane into the White House (or whatever that's supposed to represent) would just put Cheney in office and tighten the Ashcroft stranglehold on America. Patriot Act II, III, IV...

I'd prefer to visualize Howard Dean's inauguration speech or something.

Sam Jeffries (samjeff), Friday, 14 March 2003 00:05 (twenty-three years ago)

hey, that K'Crimson cover looks good (always has, to me), really cannot see no "ugly" there
the F'Mac higher up-thread, tho, sure is beauty-less (as far from a well made-up Terre Thaemlitz as one can get, inna manner of speaking)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 14 March 2003 00:09 (twenty-three years ago)

That pic of those guys flying over a smog choked city is AWESOME. Who IS that?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 14 March 2003 00:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Rye Coalition! and it's not ugly at all. I rather like it, too. Don't understand why it's included in this thread. Same goes for the new Chili Peppers cover, which reminds me of the art from Perfect From Now On.

Famous Athlete, Friday, 14 March 2003 00:42 (twenty-three years ago)

so, do you guys think Osama is a Coup fan?

this one has always particularly scared me:

Every single R.E.M. sleeve is a crime against design. Especially 'Up' and 'Reveal'.

Well of course pork pie hat and volcano, weather and a city.

Like the music inside I find this gauche but hghly enjoyable. Its not clear whether the thread is meant to by unattractive, badly designed sleeves (blur, erasure, mission) or great sleeves with ugly images (O'Rourke, Fleetwood Mac or King Crimson)

ah yes, that Atomic Kitten sleeve.
Really not nice at all, are they?
They always seem to be the type of girls who would be more at home in tracksuits, pushing prams in suburbia, gold rings on every finger and hair up like a pineapple.

russ t, Friday, 14 March 2003 12:34 (twenty-three years ago)

AAARGHHH! There's that strange mushroom/helmet type flower on the left, too, which makes me even more uneasy.

I remember many moons ago when Sign O' the times came out.

Everyone that bought it, we had to give a big peach silk rose to. Embarrassed? Wouldn't you have been?

russ t, Friday, 14 March 2003 12:58 (twenty-three years ago)

The original cover for Big Black's HEADACHE EP is really disgusting. It shows a suicide victim's head split in two. More proof that Steve Albini is totally insane. I'd post a picture of it here, but then I'd probably get banned for life.

Evan (Evan), Friday, 14 March 2003 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Same here for Brujeria's "Matando Gueros" cover (guy holding severed head by its hair)

the Aphex Twin sleeves are fantastic - what are you thinking? And that Bob Dylan one.

Another impossibly awful sleeve is Sinead O'Connor's 'Universal Mother'. The follow up 'Faith and Courage' isn't much better. Both look like bad kid drawings.

russ t, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 10:16 (twenty-three years ago)

What's the Nightwish album like? Would they mind if I stole the cover art?

dave q, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 11:19 (twenty-three years ago)

the Aphex Twin sleeves are fantastic - what are you thinking?

The Aphex Twin sleeves are excellent examples of covers that are ugly but still very good.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 11:21 (twenty-three years ago)

"What's the Nightwish album like? Would they mind if I stole the cover art?"

Nightwish makes this incredibly corny heavy metal- they actually have a female opera singer as their vocalist! I think they are quite big in Central Europe and Japan, so they probably have lawyers and such. I wouldn't risk it.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 11:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Do I reeeaaaallly want to look up the overgrown nostrils of some puffy-faced head-case? No, I do not. Ergo, the King Crimson record == Pants.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 22:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Careful, I luv those Jim O'Rourke sleeves too.

Very cute images that really give you an excellent idea what the music is like.

Very cute images that really give you an excellent idea what the music is like.

I like the covers, but I don't know where you got "cute" or "excellent idea what the music is like." What is the sound of a chubby cartoon Chinese man covering his genitals with a stuffed rabbit?

Ooooh... I think I just invented a zen koan.
