you can't make it out on screen but it's double layered so when you point it in the right light it looks three-dimensional. Actually all of Autechre's covers are ace. Amber's nice too.

― Moka, Wednesday, 28 January 2009 03:47 (seventeen years ago)
I'm going by decade.
Best 50s album cover: Ornette Coleman - This is our music - as someone wisely posted upthreadBest 60s album cover: Perrey & Kingsley - The In Sound From Way Out!Best 70s album cover: Slapp Happy - Sort Of (Devo's Are We Not Men, and Stevie Wonder's Songs In The Key were close)
Best 80s album cover? Well, this is the decade I started getting into music, so for me, it's a tough choice between this:
http://www.worldinmotion.net/neworder/discography/albums/1983/PCL.jpg
A) New Order - Power Corruption & Lies. It's the album cover that made me realize that album covers didn't have to have rules. (although the Blue Monday 12" cover was better!)
or
http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg242/kzimm2/Covers/LeatherBoyzWithElectricToyz.jpg
B) Pretty Boy Floyd - Leather Boyz With Electric Toyz. For immediacy, and the hilarious details you find the more you look at it. There's obviously no mistaking what type of music you're about to hear with this album cover. But it's the mistakes, blemishes, etc. that really make this one.
http://i25.tinypic.com/30lpgsl.jpg
C) Motorhead - Another Perfect Day. It's an underrated album by then, although not nearly their best. The cover though! Holy fuck. Even Joe Petagno didn't know how to react. He said it was inspired by inner band chaos at the time. Lemmy's jaw dropped and thought it was the best thing ever. It's one of the most frightening nauseating album covers ever that's as abstract as it is nauseating.
...
Van Halen's 1984 is close, though. As is Heaven 17's Penthouse & Pavement, and a whole bunch of others.

Best 90s cover choices:
http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm247/magicistragic/268253019_896c7fa2b3.jpg
A) Disco Inferno - D.I. Go Pop. It was a Saville take that was better than anything Saville himself did in the 90s. Also, choice icon for the group.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b307/reallysadgit/SuperFurryAnimals-Radiator.jpgB) Super Furry Animals - Radiator. Speaking of a great band/graphic designer pair. SFA/Fowler was a great great run. This was the best of all of them.
http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p275/aaron_r_campbell/ATribeCalledQuest-MidnightMarauders.jpg
C) A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders. The front model is a bit goofy. In fact, it's all goofy, but it's amazing too. The grid of different hip hop artists in the back is really neat and symbolic, if not that then idealistic.

What a weird list. After so much junk in the bottom 90, I wasn't expecting to see my personal favorite (She's So Unusual) in the top 10.
― ⓓⓡ (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 9 August 2023 05:22 (two years ago)
My probably very unpopular take is that I think many (of those) modern portrait sleeves with no text would look better with... text.
― you can see me from westbury white horse, Wednesday, 9 August 2023 08:22 (two years ago)
yea that list was truly bizarre, one of the most all-over-the-place music lists I've ever seen. and yet no Roger Dean!! I know the fact that it hits so many genres shouldn't matter since it's only about the covers, but it kinda does because the write-ups tie the cover to the music. and what they think constitutes a good cover differs wildly from one entry to the next, there's like 10 of these I think have legitimately terrible cover art, but obviously that kind of thing is what makes these kinds of lists interesting. I mean come on the Bad Bunny one? as though that's not the kind of shit you find in every 6th graders' notebook?
idk I guess my 'issue' with this list is that nearly all these albums are either canonized or otherwise very well-known. can't a shitty album have a great cover too? where is Ken's By Request Only? or You'll Cowards Don't Even Smoke Crack??? or well they put Philharmony in there so all is forgiven
― frogbs, Wednesday, 9 August 2023 14:27 (two years ago)
did we ever do an album covers poll?
― the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 9 August 2023 15:19 (two years ago)
That Billboard list is a weird collection featuring a selection of typical famous covers and then also a lot of covers which are simply head shots of the artist 'capturing the essence', other covers which are very minimalistic. I think it should be easy to make a parody in the same style describing Neil Young's Fork In The Road as the best cover ever.
― Valentijn, Wednesday, 9 August 2023 15:48 (two years ago)
The billboard list definitely reeks of tokenism: "Oh cool one word font on a blank background..."
No "No Love Deep Web" no credibility...
