Say something good about Jon Digweed

So I went to Bedrock the other week (but only because a mate was playing in the back room, aii?). In the queue were a bunch of shiny-faced, wet-lipped essex boys clutching Digweed cds that they'd brought along for him to sign. This almost got me excited as I thought anyone who can inspire this much devotion in the lumpen masses must have something going for them.

But no, prehistoric 'tribal' house beats in interminably long and boring drum tracks with the odd 'trippy' breakdown. Quite possibly the worst dj set I've ever heard (at least trainwrecks get your attention). But the place was packed, and they were lapping it up. I just don't get it.

Tell me why, ilm.

were you on pills?
were they?

I don't know really, I was on pills when I brought my mate to see him back in October. It was his birthday and I could get guestlist and he really likes him. I have to say I was just kinda bored, I mean it was so uninspiring, I did have a great time cos obviously being wrecked I just chatted to friends and things, but it's impossible to dance to what he plays, or react to it even. We spent the night drinking and chatting.

I kinda see what Jacob's getting at, in that I'm not sure how people can love Digweed, cos he seems to do so little. Other styles I don't like at least I can see an attraction. I'm not saying none exists, I mean each to his own, but I too have no idea how people enjoy the likes of Digweed.

It was the kind of show where the crowd were stretching themselves for at least 80 percent.

i meant more that the fans are probably groups of people who listened to digweed when they first started taking pills, hence the fanboy element
i mean you or i could go to the temple, neck a dozen pills and still hate the trance...

When he first started, Digweed was amazing, as was his Bedrock outfit (For What You Dream Of is still an undisputed classic), but

.....don'tknow what ahppened there.... but as of late, Digweed seems to ahve turned into dance's answer to Pink Floyd - it's more prog than anything, and it's horribly overblown and full of its own self importance.

Stick to the early stuff (his foirst Renaissance mix album still stands with the best of them today), but avoid him now at all costs, I reckon. Lads getting things SIGNED? Oh dear.....

RUSS T, Friday, 14 March 2003 16:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like For What You Dream Of alot yeah, how did he go from that to this. Also as I said last time he was mentioned, the guy is the most miserable looking bastard I've ever seen stand behind two record decks.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 14 March 2003 16:35 (twenty-three years ago)

"dance's answer to Pink Floyd "

thats a fairly good description of what ive heard of him
which isnt much,to be fair

robin (robin), Friday, 14 March 2003 16:39 (twenty-three years ago)

didn't realise he was behind for what you dream of,i seem to remember liking that...

robin (robin), Friday, 14 March 2003 16:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Digweed was better than Fatboy Slim on Brighton Beach last Summer but no-one really noticed :)

one year passes...

heaven scent completely blew my mind as a teen. what kind of music is this? i'm pretty ignorant when it comes to electronic music genres. trance?

the-aderam (diamonddave85), Friday, 5 November 2010 21:31 (fifteen years ago)

Heaven Scent played at 33 instead of 45 sounds incredible.

get the fuck out of my mouth (boxedjoy), Friday, 5 November 2010 21:58 (fifteen years ago)

100% trance.

Ah, to read these comments above - unprepared for the boring and bland minimal taking over clubland. Looking back, Digweed, Lawler et al were wildly maximalist compared to what came after.
