Please suggest: weird, sludgy music

I'm looking for something like Vertical Slit: mutant Midwestern cough-syrup basement "outsider" music... something really warped and creative and on its own bizarre track, not tied into a "scene" or trends (probably also not really "ironic"). I know there's a ton of metal that meets this description; but I mean more punk or '70s-rock influenced rock. Other touchstones might be various stuff on Siltbreeze (but not as "experimental" as Dead C)... also that Drag City disc by the Finnish band Liimanarina. People who sound like they just "had" to make warped, scary, messed-up music, not caring whether anyone heard it or not. KnowwhatImean?

Seek ye Karp.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 14 March 2003 20:03 (twenty-three years ago)

There's a ton of cool stuff on Hyped to Death's Homework series that maybe fits your description. http://www.hyped2death.com

scott m (mcd), Friday, 14 March 2003 20:11 (twenty-three years ago)

GOD might be a band you'll want to investigate.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 14 March 2003 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I sad it before and I'll say it again, Elevator aka Elevator Through aka Elevator Through Hell and Aka Elevator To Hell

New album is reviewed in Magnet, was #1 on earshot! charts and isn't on AMG at the moment. And the band is Rick and Mark's from Eric's Trip who might fit your description.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 14 March 2003 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, I have a bunch of those "Homework" discs! Good call. (There's good stuff in there, 'tis true.)

(Thanks, all.)

Sam Jeffries (samjeff), Friday, 14 March 2003 20:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Bunny Brains!!! Listen to lots of Bunny Brains!! Get their singles comp-Sin Gulls(Goring St.Eddy) or get all the other stuff too.Get their album on Black Jack or the 10 inch on Now Sound. Or find a copy of their CD 93 on Ebay. They STILL don't care if anybody listens to them.

Scott Seward, Friday, 14 March 2003 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh good. I didn't know if that's the kinda thing you were thinking of but certainly there are a whole lot of Homework bands who made "messed-up music, not caring whether anyone heard it or not."

scott m (mcd), Friday, 14 March 2003 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Definitely, I think: George Brigman and Split, Chrome, Destroy All Monsters, MX-80 Sound, Sewer Zombies, Von Lmo. (Maybe also: Amon Duul, the Deviants, real early Flaming Lips, Flipper, Vox Pop?) And make sure you look for the late Tim Sheppard's non-Vertical Slit stuff, as V3 and Phantom Limb. Though the Vertical Slit stuff is best.

chuck, Friday, 14 March 2003 20:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Did you ever pick up the cd reissue of the Debris Static Disposal record? From the 70's; if you dig Vertical Slit you'll love it. Basement/cough-syrup thump of the highest order.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 14 March 2003 20:29 (twenty-three years ago)

No, but I keep hearing about that! I gotta get it. Thanks!

Sam Jeffries (samjeff), Friday, 14 March 2003 20:31 (twenty-three years ago)

You should totally get it, I think you'd really like it - plus they were from Oklahoma! The guy who does that label also released a cd reissue of all the stuff by the Twinkeez, who also fit the bill. Unfortunately that one looks like it might be out of print.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 14 March 2003 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Charlambides and temple of bon matin and shadow ring and of course Harry Pussy and Mike Rep and the Quotas is all good Siltbreeze stuff.

Scott Seward, Friday, 14 March 2003 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

is wolf eyes to obvious?

marcg (marcg), Friday, 14 March 2003 20:36 (twenty-three years ago)

tatu - "how soon is now"

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 14 March 2003 20:38 (twenty-three years ago)

too obvious i meant, obviously

marcg (marcg), Friday, 14 March 2003 20:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow, I'm reading Ned R.'s write-ups of MX-80 Sound on AMG; they sound terrific.

Sam Jeffries (samjeff), Friday, 14 March 2003 20:48 (twenty-three years ago)

(Although, *cough*: http://www.mx-80.com/lyrics.htm )

Sam Jeffries (samjeff), Friday, 14 March 2003 20:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Neither terribly weird or outsider but afwul sludgy is Caustic Resin. A punker Crazy Horse with everything turned up to eleven?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've got that Lights out b/w So Clear 7". It's certainly not the cream of the MX-80 crop, so don't be dissuaded by those lyrics necessarily.

scott m (mcd), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:07 (twenty-three years ago)

um, that's "jim", not "tim", chuck

Bosse-De-Nage (Bosse-De-Nage), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I'm totally getting those MX-80 CDs that compile their first few albums... they sound awesome.

Sam Jeffries (samjeff), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I happen to like Caustic Resin a lot, too, by the way. You guys are OTM!

Sam Jeffries (samjeff), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I played Cranium with Brett from Caustic Resin last weekend. My team won.

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

dj screw, 3six mafia?? cough syrup? heh. just joshin'

i know none of the bands in question, so my answer may be way off.
is Earth too metal? or boris?

JasonD (JasonD), Friday, 14 March 2003 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

The Potions.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Friday, 14 March 2003 22:00 (twenty-three years ago)

if you want hip-hop in that variety... dalek's new one...

cheers to shadow ring, harry pussy, tom smith... mentions...

strangely, some sebadoh might fit here.

unwound 45s at 33rpm.

the parson sound.

the new all scars might touch this.

to live and shave in la?
m.

msp, Friday, 14 March 2003 22:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Sludgy & scary? I'm thinking Fushitsusha and early Swans. In the warped & freaky because it had to be that way department, I'd have to mention Yahowha 13, Shaggs, and the Godz (ESP Disk, not the crappy '70s metal band). SubArachnoid Space is good too.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Saturday, 15 March 2003 02:50 (twenty-three years ago)

blackjack records in general applies, i think - brainbombs, monoshock, liquorball, bunny brains, et al.

from new zealand: crude (check "refute a myth society"), armpit's _ruby_ cassette on freedom from, morepork's _let the marketplace fall bleeding_ - all fucked up and noisy but with more 'music' going on than your average dead c album. especially morepork - if you like liimanarina you might just love morepork.

oh, and dial's _infraction_.

your null fame (yournullfame), Saturday, 15 March 2003 03:36 (twenty-three years ago)

This guy I know who has a project called Black Mayonnaise is like Swans meets Godlfesh if Kranky put it out. New record coming out soon but he has these GREAT tapes for sale thru his website, i'd recommend you grab them before lots of people know about him and those shits end up on ebay for triple digits. Google him - you'll love it

also - DJ Screw is the best thing to listen to while "fucked up"

i second bunnybrains, chrome, unwound 45s on 33 (nice one)

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 15 March 2003 06:09 (twenty-three years ago)

that black mayonnaise guy has a CD coming on emperor jones, right? i can't wait to hear that.

your null fame (yournullfame), Saturday, 15 March 2003 06:50 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah - that's the label. I couldn't think of it, for some reason I kept wanting to say Trance Syndicate (duh). We're supposed to be putting out a "Best of" Black Mayo cdr on Polyamory, but not sure when we'll get that together.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 15 March 2003 07:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Electric Eels
Mirrors
Lubricated Goat
God Bullies

brg30 (brg30), Saturday, 15 March 2003 22:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Steel Pole Bathtub
Melvins
Hammerhead
Landed
Isis

I'll second the votes for Bunny Brains, Temple of Bon Matin and Brainbombs.

Ian Johnson (orion), Saturday, 15 March 2003 22:16 (twenty-three years ago)

THE BIRTHDAY PARTY!!!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 15 March 2003 22:25 (twenty-three years ago)

So, has no one heard GOD or do people just no like them?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 15 March 2003 23:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked GOD - what was that 4 song ep with the white cover? fuck i think i sold that record. anyway, from what i remember of them, they were cool

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 16 March 2003 00:16 (twenty-three years ago)

4 song ep..."breach birth?" "consumed?"

i don't break their stuff out every day/month/year, but they're aiight. really, i wish i had kept "consumed" - seems like as they went on they became more of a funky godflesh and lost the extended, heavy repetition of that record. "possession" is kinda neat.

your null fame (yournullfame), Sunday, 16 March 2003 01:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Bardo Pond. Either _Amen_ or _Amanita_ or _Lapsed_ are the best places to start. Surprised nobody's mentioned 'em yet...

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Sunday, 16 March 2003 22:13 (twenty-three years ago)

SunnO)))
birchville cat motel (not sludgy so much as screechy, tho)

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Sunday, 16 March 2003 22:19 (twenty-three years ago)

SunO)))
birchville cat motel (NZ--not so sludgy tho)

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Sunday, 16 March 2003 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow, I'm reading Ned R.'s write-ups of MX-80 Sound on AMG; they sound terrific.

Why thank you. Chuck mentioned Von Lmo; let me second that. His review in Stairway to Hell is what got me interested in them, and they're definitely crazed and good.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 March 2003 22:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Thug, although it's probably a little more electronic/industrial

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 16 March 2003 22:45 (twenty-three years ago)

What about Electric Eels? Fun stuff, recently reissued, too.

scott m (mcd), Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Someone mentioned Armpit; theres much better material from Mr Armpit and co at his Root Don Lonie for Cash, and unlike ordering from freedom from you're likely to recieve something back instead of just supporting whatever porn/drug habits matthew s g happens to have a the moment. In fact most things on the root label would fitly neatly in the parameters of this thread.

hamish (hamish), Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:35 (twenty-three years ago)

This shit Helltime laid down on his four-track with his MS2000 and a sampler and a bunch of guitarwailing is weird and sludgy if it's anything. Listened to it last night shortly after drinking a bit of 'Absente' and WHOO WHEEEEE fucked up, dude.

Millar (Millar), Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:41 (twenty-three years ago)

i never thought of the electric eels as being sludgy. as a matter of fact, their production is the closest to absolute perfection in sound i've heard, closely followed by chrome's "half machine lip moves."

your null fame (yournullfame), Monday, 17 March 2003 04:28 (twenty-three years ago)

how bout cherubs?or lesley rankines pre disco stuff with Silverfish? I second Monoshock(julian cope bandwagoneers notwithstanding),If you put some Black Sun Ensemble stuff in the dark it molders nicely, what about Main(scared me badly one evening)..anyhoo my vegetable pies are ready.

dan bunnybrain, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 22:30 (twenty-three years ago)

gotta second chuck on the flipper. "If I Can't Be Drunk" especially. for real.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 22:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Gravitar

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 01:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I second Monoshock(julian cope bandwagoneers notwithstanding)

julian cope bandwagoneers? wha?

also, just thought of terminal cheesecake. not that it fits the original brief or anything but i just listened to "angels in pigtails" all the way through and it's redolent of the oily beauty of all of those late 80s UK greaseball bands like skullflower, god, splintered, walkingseeds, etc.

your null fame (yournullfame), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 03:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Everything I know by Monoshock is quite fast. Has dave q mentioned the Brainbombs yet? (I haven't read the thread).

Kris (aqueduct), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 03:52 (twenty-three years ago)
