Gnac / Montgolfier Bros: S & D

Just like Rebecca (as detailed in eloquent fashion in the Lee Mavers Shits Gold thread), I was intrigued by the Gnac track on the Earworm Records 2CD compilation (sounded like what I'd imagine Piano Magic to sound like), and purchased their Poptones album from a UK seller. The album sounds like watered-down synth-damaged interpretations of "The Girl From Ipanema". WTF?

I remember some web research unearthing a healthy amount of pre-McGee swag for both the Bros & the Gnac. Any suggestions?

Man o man...

Bitter, bitter, bitter...

[email protected], Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What I don't get is this:

None of you are in remotely successful bands. You spend an inordinate amount of time attacking smaller artists with bitter vehemence. Then complain about the lack of real artists.

It's sad really. I mean, gnac is a one man band, struggling and you are wasting everyone's time but being negative and bitter. On the other thread I was enjoying talking about music. But it's the gang/mob mentality.

If someone has a dissenting opinion, people or some people at ILM attack them ruthlessly. Is your opinion that important? And if it is why are you posting on what is essentially an over rated message board?

Sad. Sad. Sad.

The best postings are people just chatting about what is a common love.

and ps.

Don't hate me because I'm beautiful and have a more interesting life than you.

It's a waste of time cause I'm one happy bloke!!

well, i haven't heard the new gnac album, but the singles compilation on rocket girl is ok, very nice in places. the montgolfier brothers which seem to be the same personnel is a different matter. the album was one of my faves of 99, it has a peculiar todmorden garden centre 1958 vibe. its a shame that quigley records went bust, because they did some nice stuff, the montgolfier brothers album being the pinnacle. its an album i'd recommend to anyone. makes me think of betjamen (sp?) a little too

i believe there were some gnac remixes, by some people, can't remember who though, junior varsity km and flowchart (yay, playing live tomorrow night, can't wait, flowchart ROCK DA HOUSE Y'ALL!) possibly. anyone heard these...

gareth, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Don't cry, you funny little man.

chris, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

quigley stuff is ace. roger sent me some of that stuff.

no baby, not crying, only cry when 'we are the world' comes on...

[email protected], Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

seventeen stars, that was the name of the album. think it was on verspertine not quigley, can't remember. this may be the one that poptones has re-issued/licensed. but david, dude, ya needs those piano magic records.

gareth, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You know, ty, I'm beginning to think that you really don't understand English. I'd appreciate it if you actually READ the posts you're responding to before offering up your off-base and nonsensical rhetoric. That might be asking for a bit much, though.

Gareth: Yeah, dude, I do. I just keep on getting sidetracked by something or other.

And, yes, the Rocket Girl 2CD set is quite nice (though I've only heard the 1st 1/2).

David Raposa, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

david, nothing should divert you from the, um, magic of piano magic. heh heh.

what did you think of the rocket girl comp, david? i was disappointed. it was a shame because there have been some nice records on rocket girl, and i was hoping for a lot more from the 2cd comp.

gareth, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Montgolfier Bros record originally came out on Vespertine Records didn't it? A nice, quirkly little label. Lots of post-Durutti Column style noodling (I don't think GNAC really emerge from the shadow of Vini Reilly). Anyway, I've said it before, and I'll say it again "Pro- Celebrity Hanging Around" by the Mont. Bros. is one of my favourite songs of all time.

stevie t, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i'll second that stevie. and the durutti thing re: gnac is true yes, like a midpoint of reilly and legrand?

gareth, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In addition to all the stuff above I can heartily recommend the Quigley side of the Spring Will Be A Little Late This Year 10".

Richard Tunnicliffe, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

pointless pedantry department: *Betjeman*. I wouldn't necessarily use that as a compliment, though, Gareth ...

Robin Carmody, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i see yr point, robin. i've never actually read betjeman. i'm using it more as a personal archetype of something that i imagine to be betjemanesque, rather than an analogy that could actually hold any water. lazyness on my part...

gareth, Saturday, 30 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gareth: Seeing as how the Rocket Girl box has gotten buried under a recent influx of new music, I'll have to postpone my semi-valid opinion on the box for the time being. But the first disc sounded quite nice. I was really surprised by the Silver Apples track, since they're, like, old or something.

David Raposa, Saturday, 30 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's an easy instant connection to make, though, Gareth. I *know* I've done it many times when a more imaginative analogy laid in waiting, and I just completely forgot it was there, under my nose ...

Robin Carmody, Saturday, 30 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

david, yes the silver apples are indeed old. but they reformed in, like, 96 or something, and put out that single on rocket girl (which is a recorded version of one of their 60s songs). they also put out a single on enraptured (fractal flow) in about 96. this is far superior and is worth tracking down.

gareth, Sunday, 1 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Rocket Girl comp is an unusual beast, in that CD1 (hits) is a mess - two godawful PS I Love You tracks shattering the flow, the overlong "Canadian Brought Us Snow", Mazarin's blah second single put on there, no coherence, etc. etc. It does have "London Is Swinging By His Neck", "Wheats" and "There's No Need For Us To Be Alone", three brilliant singles...but that's about it. (The Loopdrop track is also good)

However the unreleased stuff is - surprisingly - almost entirely much more interesting and much better. I could do without the Her Space Holiday track but everything else I find mighty enjoyable. Yes, Gnac included.

I JUST finally discovered the Montgolfier Brothers (thanks to nicking parts of Gareth's road trip mix CD-Rs when he was here in Seattle), and I quickly ordered their two records. I just wanted to revive this thread in hopes of making lots of other folks discover how amazing they are.

They really strike that Eno/Penguin Cafe Orchestra/Fahey vibe... or like the more serene parts of Papa M's Live From A Shark Cage. The days seems like months waiting for my amazon order.

the second montgolfiers album is significantly better than the first. "the world is flat" slays me every time.

the atswimtwobirds album is touching, as well.

i do have a vague idea that roger quigley (aka atswimtwobirds) would make an ideal guest vocalist on the michael mayer album.

The new Southern Arts Society record promises a vocal cameo from Roger Quigley, I'm hopeful it's something worthwhile.

zaxxon25, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 23:27 (seventeen years ago)

The press release for the last Gnac/Mark Tranmer album mentioned that he was working on an album featuring all female vocalists (which just sounds like a chance to pull, to me) and a Lindstrom-inspired nu-disco album.

We’ll be listening to Seventeen Stars by The Montgolfier Brothers. Roger Quigley from the band passed away last week, leaving us with so many beautiful songs

There’ll be no tweets from me, no guests, just the music

djh, Monday, 24 August 2020 15:37 (five years ago)

On a side note, this sad news led me to do some searching and given this is a Gnac thread as well, Mark Tranmer's got an extensive Bandcamp page up including a slew of Gnac rarities as well as current work:

Shit, they were so good. Such a fine band with subtle wistful tunes & lyrics. I never understood why they didn't have more success. The first two Montgolfier Brothers albums are all-time classics of indie chamber pop.

while abroad, he would naturally gravitate towards a locals’ bar rather than a museum or art gallery.

a strange sentence in an obituary.
