The Excision of Which Artists You REALLY Love From Your Favorites List Would Make Your Musical Taste Appear "Better"?

If I spent less time big-upping Gomez and Pizzicato Five and the 5th Dimension and Original Concept and Cibo Matto's second album and lumpen funk bands and Common and absurdly over-ambitious genre-fuck long-ass albums on these boards, ILM people would probably think I'm hipper and cooler than they do now, if they ever thought of it, which they don't really. But I'll never give these groups up, dammit, because they're all really great beautiful talents that are awaiting their critical renaissance, and all y'all are missing the boat.

But yeah, if I wanted to seem with-it and ILMish, I'd drop these bastards like the Dow Jones Average.

So who is it for you peoplez?

Neudonym, Saturday, 15 March 2003 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

The Police. Pink Floyd (post-Syd). That's all I can think of for now.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 15 March 2003 15:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I dropped all such bands long ago and their names are lost in the trackless dust of history.

Taste = the public expression of private habits and behaviour. Sculpting it a bit seems no worse to me than not scratching your balls or picking your teeth in public.

(Actually I am pretty honest about what I listen to, which is also no doubt why I'm a shambolic wreck of a man who hasn't had a haircut in 9 months.)

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 15 March 2003 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

at least you're not getting indie mullet like i am

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 15 March 2003 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I really really liked the second Harvey Danger album(King James Version). On a scale of 1 to 10 how lame does that make me? And apparently not too many people on ILM share my active like for that red snapper album(our aim is to satisfy...)But that probably doesn't make me too lame. Um,let me think...jeez,what would it have to be? Either Coldplay or Pink Floyd? I like Sigur Ros!Hmmm...that's not it either. I own every Thin Lizzy album and every Bananarama 12 inch almost.Heck, that just makes me sound cooler. I'm really trying! I listen to lots of bad hippy music. That will have to be it. I own 2 albums by Toe Fat fer christssake! I even listen to Wishbone Ash on occasion.I have listened to Keith Relf's Armegeddon album and the first Captain Beyond record probably 500 times altogether.I own mono AND stereo copies of my favorite Paul Revere & The Raiders albums. That will have to do for now.My favorite album of the week though is that Aislers Set record,How I Learned To Write Backwards, cuz it reminds me of Wendy & Bonnie and the Marine Girls and Oh Ok a little but most of all my beloved Shop Assistants from when I was a kiddie.

Scott Seward, Saturday, 15 March 2003 16:11 (twenty-three years ago)

OH, and I haven't had a haircut in 8 years!

Scott Seward, Saturday, 15 March 2003 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I go for the 'trim off the split ends' thing every few months.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 March 2003 16:23 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah,Ned,that is helpful. All proud metal warriors should.

Scott Seward, Saturday, 15 March 2003 16:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Good Charlotte is a big thorn in those-who-would-respect-my-tastes' side. But FUCK 'EM. They just can't handle the fire.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 March 2003 17:30 (twenty-three years ago)

The Counting Crows.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Saturday, 15 March 2003 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

bless me father, for it has been two weeks since my last confession. i have had evil thoughts. i have been listening to the wrong things. erm, i *like* oasis right up to 'be here now'. i wouldn't say i really love them, exactly. i also have a soft spot for "the riverboat song" by ocean colour scene. i like classic rock and have gone off justin timberlake. am i going to hell?

Dave M. (rotten03), Saturday, 15 March 2003 17:42 (twenty-three years ago)

U2

dave q, Saturday, 15 March 2003 17:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think about this sort of thing much, but I'm just surprised nobody here seems to love Haysi Fantayzee as much as I do. Also, I've never really found Damon Albarn to be a twat.

Arthur (Arthur), Saturday, 15 March 2003 18:03 (twenty-three years ago)

OH HO HO Ho! I would say that I love Haysie as much as anybody and then some.Have all their 12 inch extended mixes as well. You aren't really a fan unless you own the megamixes of holy joe and john wayne is big leggy and shiny shiny AND Kate Garner post-Haysie singles. You can be a big Bow Wow Wow fan without owning Annabella's solo joint, BUT you get extra special props if you own the Chiefs of Relief album. I also own the collected works of Wide Boy Awake. And I still listen to the Passion Puppets song "Like Dust" but I don't listen to Blue Zoo's "Cry Boy Cry" even though I still have a copy and it was produced by Tim Friese Green.(But I still listen to the Catherine Wheel and Talk Talk of course)

Scott Seward, Saturday, 15 March 2003 18:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Scott, I love you. I'M NOT ALONE!!!

Arthur (Arthur), Saturday, 15 March 2003 18:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Hurrah! :-)

I have the Haysi CD reissue and I think wrote the AMG review of same. Kate Garner ended up at KUCI a few years back because she lives in LA and was going out with someone in Banyan (who were doing a live on-air set), and dug out the vinyl of Battle Children for her amusement.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 March 2003 18:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I can still remember how mad I was at Rolling Stone's dismissive one star review of the Haysie album!! GGGGGGRRRRRR! It still makes me mad. What did they know? Always going on and on about greenonredbodeansjasonandthescorcherslosloboscruzadoslongryders all the live fucking long day.Double GGGGGRRRRRR!!!!

Scott Seward, Saturday, 15 March 2003 18:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Kate and her husband and kid lived across the street from my friend Ranney in Los Feliz. I kept trying to get him to take me over there, but it never happened. Then he moved. Fucker.

Was there more than one post-Haysi Kate single, Scott? You're hardcore!! I remember we had one called "Love Me Like a Rocket" on the jukebox of the bar I worked at, but the other big Haysi fan, the doorman, made off with it when the bar closed.

I remember the English press was dismissive, too. Like, oh ho ho, here's the Bow Wow Wow/Culture Club that'll NEVER make it. Let's tear 'em apart, those evil blitz kid clotheshorses.

Arthur (Arthur), Saturday, 15 March 2003 18:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Do you realise "Stunt" by Barenaked Ladies is possibly one of the top 5 guitar albums from the late 90s?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 15 March 2003 18:44 (twenty-three years ago)

No, actually I think that was it. I did make it sound like there were more up above didn't I.I just meant all plus her thing. Course, I could be wrong. She might have had a japanese career that we know nothing about. I just saw somewhere that some group,I think it might have been Swing Out Sister have like 15 japanese only releases. I think it was them.

Scott Seward, Saturday, 15 March 2003 18:45 (twenty-three years ago)

My brothers and I all chipped in to buy the Annabella Lwin solo album the day it came out. Harrrr.

And I have all the extended 12" remixes from Indie Mullet: "My Gal Qwerty" b/w "Number 10, Number 10"; "Chutzpah Herpes Jr. Goes to the Petting Zoo" b/w "CHJGttPZ Dubb" (Trevor Horn produced!); all that stuff. It's brill.

Neudonym, Saturday, 15 March 2003 18:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Blur okay. Is ILM anti-Blur that much? Their singles comp has to beat any other bands of that time period, doesn't it? Maybe Suede's is better, I can't remember.

Scott Seward, Saturday, 15 March 2003 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

It's so sad, but if I ever make a trip to Europe I KNOW that I will spend all my time trying to find rare Digette and Tone Band singles.Instead of seeing the sights or something."Fred From Jupiter" rocks!!!

Scott Seward, Saturday, 15 March 2003 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Suede doesn't have one yet. Blur would have had a great singles comp had the band broken up in 1996, but alas...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 March 2003 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Errr. I think liking Fifth Dimension makes you pretty hip in my book. For me, it's Carole King, Van Morrison's Astral Weeks, Charles Mingus and well I hate pop. I really hate pop. I hate Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Ashanti, The Spice Girls. I hate the whole lot. I love Bruce Springsteen. I've got all of the albums. I love archetype of cool bands. I love Primal Scream. I love the Beach Boys. I love bands that sound like the Byrds. I love Tom Waits. I love easy listening. I love Henry Mancini. (List Goes On). Suppose that is why I lurked for a bit here and decided the place was not really for me! Even though I am responding here! : - D

S Samson, Saturday, 15 March 2003 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

but S Samson don't you see that's why you're needed here....

Neudonym, Saturday, 15 March 2003 18:53 (twenty-three years ago)

All of them. I'm not ILx-user-friendly.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 15 March 2003 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't understand the question, personally I love and cherish all of my Tiny Tim/ Mrs. Miller/ Jake Thackray albums.

Dadaismus, Saturday, 15 March 2003 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh I don't think ILM need me per say. I just find it frustrating because you will get the 'regulars' popping up on a thread telling you how dismal your musical tastes are because it does not align with theirs. And then they go on that 'Is ILE Better than ILM' thread to talk about ILM back in the day and bitch'. I think it makes ILM paranoid with reprimands! But thanks for the compliment!

S Samson, Saturday, 15 March 2003 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I almost forgot!! I love Gruppo Sportivo and Kissing The Pink and The Adult Net too!! ( But not the shortened KTP so much )

Scott Seward, Saturday, 15 March 2003 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

would you really respect me more if i didnt like stuff by U2, Stereo MCs, Zero 7, Groove Armada, The Charlatans, The Music, Campag Velocet, Lo Fi All Stars, Fatboy Slim, UNKLE, Ben & Jason, Foo Fighters, Regular Fries, Gomez, Bis and At The Drive In?

ah well, who needs yer anyway...

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 15 March 2003 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I always thought liking Gomez made me look cooler. Shows what I know about anglophilia.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 March 2003 19:46 (twenty-three years ago)

If I knew which one was Gomez and which one was Travis I would probably like one of them. But one of them has the guy with the raspy voice who did that beatles song in the commercial, right? Well, then I would probably like the other one then.

Scott Seward, Saturday, 15 March 2003 19:57 (twenty-three years ago)

ew, you like Travis? I love the O-Level Eddie Vedder. Search: "Tijuana Lady"

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 March 2003 20:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm just guessing. I don't like that raspy guy based on that commercial. I have never heard either band.

Scott Seward, Saturday, 15 March 2003 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't see you really liking either. But that Gomez dude's rasp does plenty for me. Nice polite but eccentric blooze.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 March 2003 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Probably Primal Scream.

But fuck it, I really can't be bothered to "appear" "better".

kate (suzy), Saturday, 15 March 2003 20:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Fuck it, I've still got a place in my heart for They Might Be Giants. (Actually I was surprised the other day when so many of you professed love for "Ana Ng.")

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 15 March 2003 21:10 (twenty-three years ago)

On these boards, it's probably anything Mike Patton-related. Guy gets no love outside of Nick.

original bgm, Saturday, 15 March 2003 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked Angel Dust.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 15 March 2003 21:21 (twenty-three years ago)

beachwood sparks! but some things are just too good to resist!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 15 March 2003 21:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I love the hell out of Fantomas' The Director's Cut.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 15 March 2003 21:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked "Epic" and "Mid-Life Crisis" but actually, fuck it, he was the most annoying part of those songs. I'll just say I like his interjections on that Lovage album.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 March 2003 21:41 (twenty-three years ago)

The Clash.

Sam Jeffries (samjeff), Saturday, 15 March 2003 23:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Mike Patton rocks.

Also, the newer Blur material is great and I stand by my bold and oft-mocked declaration that "Music Is My Radar" is their best single.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 15 March 2003 23:49 (twenty-three years ago)

b-b-but S Samson, the Beach Boys, Byrds, Springsteen and Carole King ARE pop!

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Saturday, 15 March 2003 23:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I guess I'd be cooler if I didn't like the Manics, and I can't really defend my Syd Barrett phase, either. Oh well.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Saturday, 15 March 2003 23:51 (twenty-three years ago)

it's obvious in my case ... though, to quote Clarence Thomas, "i ain't evolvin'" and i ain't getting rid of all the Zappa i own.

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 16 March 2003 00:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Basically all the hardcore bands I love with the entirety of my being; Dropdead, Yaphet Kotto, Portraits of Past, Born Against, Assfactor 4, Palatka, etc.

Also, Velocity Girl, Rainer Maria, Bardo Pond, Yo La Tengo, etc.

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 16 March 2003 00:32 (twenty-three years ago)

with "uncool" stuff, one should stick to one's guns while hoping that others eventually come 'round to how great it really is. think of Julian Cope and John Lydon, and their love of Krautrock -- what could have been more unfashionable back in the late seventies/early eighties? not a few ILMers have expressed their love for Yes and Genesis, both of whom seem to have been rehabbed to some extent. and Stereolab practically owns this thread.

so when it becomes "fashionable" and "cool" to admit to liking Frank Zappa, i'll be sittin' pretty i will!

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 16 March 2003 00:36 (twenty-three years ago)

It'd be good if I could get rid of the Smiths and Bowie. Cos I have so many records by them that it looks imbalanced when people are checking out what I've got. Also, they're kind of boring, in that everyone likes them (apart from a lot of Americans). It's like having the Beatles as your favourite band. Even if they are your favourite, choose something else for the sake of the fucking conversation.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 16 March 2003 00:39 (twenty-three years ago)

b-b-but S Samson, the Beach Boys, Byrds, Springsteen and Carole King ARE pop!

No, no, no. According to ILX these ACTS are dinosaurs to the one a day, sometimes twice a day, CD Single or Cassingle pop crew of former child stars who are indoctrinated into ILX greatness by their fondness of using a production team the size of a small town in Nebraska in order to hit the top of the pop charts. If ILX were located in the fifties on some sort of pidgeon messaging device 'the regulars' would be damning Elvis and singing the praises of Annette Funnicello and Ricky Nelson. : - D

S Samson, Sunday, 16 March 2003 00:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Super Furry Animals, especially considering their last album.

jack cole (jackcole), Sunday, 16 March 2003 01:24 (twenty-three years ago)

anything with a hint of 'twee'

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 16 March 2003 02:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Apparently, its considered gauche and tactless to love GWAR and Enya.
Someone please explain why.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Sunday, 16 March 2003 04:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Never mind. That deserves its own thread.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Sunday, 16 March 2003 04:57 (twenty-three years ago)

sir lord baltimore, budgie, hawkwind, the rolling stones, pussy galore, spacemen 3, mike rep & the quotas, NWA, willie nelson, john coltrane, suicide, can, the beatles, todd rundgren, monoshock
