What Music Would You Play On A Hot Summer Day In A Town Where There Was Nothing To Do But Play Music and Drink Cool Beverages.

I would think Billie Holiday's Summertime, Night and Day and Georgia on my Mind. What would you play?

S Samson, Sunday, 16 March 2003 22:50 (twenty-three years ago)

The Nation of Ulysses, Plays Pretty For Baby
Bob Marley, Uprising
Neutral Milk Hotel, In The Aeroplane Over The Sea

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 16 March 2003 22:59 (twenty-three years ago)

A whole sheaf of Durutti Column LPs.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:03 (twenty-three years ago)

"Cico Buff" by Cocteau Twins, without a doubt.

chris sallis, Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:07 (twenty-three years ago)

The Stones, man. The Stones.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Nah, not the Stones, they're a night band - I'm envisaging a perfect summer's day here - am I wrong?

chris sallis, Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Skylarking by XTC

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:13 (twenty-three years ago)

A perfect Georgian summer's day when you have nothing to do but lounge on a porch and drink. I am just thinking of last summer as I am playing Billie Holiday.

S Samson, Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:13 (twenty-three years ago)

personally, I think ALL music sounds better at night (that's just me). But on this hypothetical day I'm putting these CD's in the 5CD-changer. Saving the Stones for night.

B-52's Cosmic Thing
REM's Reckoning
Sublime's 20th Century Masters Millenium Collection
Sugar Ray's Sugar Ray
Smashmouth's Anthony's Best of Smashmouth CD-R.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd play the Ramones.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:17 (twenty-three years ago)

To clarify my above answer, I'd listen to Bob Marley while cooking and eating breakfast, The Nation of Ulysses while riding my bike in the afternoon, and Neutral Milk Hotel while getting blazed at night.

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Good call on Reckoning. The Ramones are a good NYC hot summer's day band. But which album? Or does it matter? A greatest hits would suffice.

Ha! Good call on NMH. I would have to play this Jeff Mangum internet bootleg at night. Then I could pretend that he is playing on my porch. Billie is good for smoking cigarettes and drinking to at night while watching night fall.

S Samsonite, Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Urban Dance Squad's "Mental Floss For The Globe"

maria b (maria b), Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:21 (twenty-three years ago)

" A perfect Georgian summer's day ..." -- Georgian!? oi man, forget Billie Holiday, and the rest! better listen to all those cool three-part harmonies sung by venerably sun-tanned elderly Georgians, high up in the mountains!
oi,oi how i (would) envy you! ;-)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:28 (twenty-three years ago)

For the first nice spring day in the midwest I'm listening to the new Bonnie 'Prince' Billy. Also good is ambient, but probably if you're lying in bed.

Adam A. (Keiko), Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:33 (twenty-three years ago)

What is the name of the new Bonnie 'Prince' Billy album? Last summer I had the run of my friend's house and I miss the heat. And the incredible once a day rainstorms.

S Samson, Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:35 (twenty-three years ago)

What is the name of the new Bonnie 'Prince' Billy album?
"Master & Everyone"

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd lock myself in a dark room w/closed curtains and listen to SAWII. That's what I did today, in fact.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:57 (twenty-three years ago)

it's hot, right? like georgia - hot & humid? if so, let's start with cool water by roy rogers & the sons of the pioneers. of course, samson, billie holiday would represent, and she'd be followed by blind willie mctell. i suppose he'd serve a suitable segue for some a 'lil louder a la the white stripes. what happens as the sun sets, the stars appear and the bugs come out?

Anything I could air-guitar to.

hstencil, Monday, 17 March 2003 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

like "hmm I've been MEANING to dust off some of these old records for awhile too, I'm glad you mentioned you were having a house party, reminds me of the old days" and he comes over with originals of everything and when he touches the turntables suddenly the sound system gets 1,000,000 times better and a disco light you didn't know you had starts spinning around

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 17 March 2003 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, Midnight Marauders is as summery as a jar of fireflies. Playing that album, even in the dark depths of a Michigan February, will make me fiend for lemonade.
