if *my* parents had known what hip-hop was (gonna be like), they'd've been way cooler than Nostradamus, hohohooo

There's an article in The Observer today about how older women like Justin Timberlake because he has an Oedipus complex. Or something. I didn't actually read it.

My dad appreciates some of the hip-hop I listen to.

the coolest thing my mum has ever said was when i was listening to hip hop - EPMD i think.

dad: how can you listen to this? there's no melody.
mum: this is rap, it's not about melody, it's about rhythm.

thanks mum!

chaki (chaki), Monday, 17 March 2003 10:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I hope parents get into hip-hop soon, as that is probably what will finally kill hip-hop.

(Which is pathetic, because most parents do actually have better musical taste than most kids)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 17 March 2003 11:47 (twenty-three years ago)

My Gran asked me to play her some hip-hop back in '92!

Shame prevents me from revealing what I chose.

I once asked my dad (who lives in the States) to get me a couple of hip-hop CDs that weren't out at the time in the UK (Paris - 'Sleeping with the enemy' and Geto Boys - 'We can't be stopped').

I wish I'd seen the look on the face of person behind the counter at the record shop when he bought them.

He didn't listen to them, cos if he had I'd have got the "You call this bloody music" rant. (Which I am destined to repeat myself when my own lad starts buying records.)

Thom is right. I think I revealed it before actually.

My mom & I traded vehicles over the weekend, 'cause she needed to use my truck to haul some big piles of wood. In return, I get to borrow her new Jetta (which rox btw).

I get in, and what CD is in the player? Wyclef Jean's The Carnival.

My parents have always been really cool about hip-hop; I remember long family road-trips listening to Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince or De La or Biz Markie, and they still do listen to some hip-hop. My mom's favorite seems to be Wyclef, while my dad seems to listen to Outkast a lot.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 13:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Every mum's favourite is Wyclef.

Only right since he penned the MOST ROMANTIC SONG OF ALL TIME.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 13:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought that was the Outhere Brothers.

When I was a Freshman in high school in 1988 I had gone to the mall one Sunday and discovered NWA's "Straight Outta Compton". I brought the tape to school to show all my friends this new find, it was the first artist I saw that had a "Parental Advisory" sticker on it. I was showing my friend the tape when my English teacher saw me passing it to him. This was a Catholic High School mind you. She grabbed the tape and looked at it, stunned. She confiscated it. I was sent to the office. Next day my parents and I got to sit in the headmasters office and listen to the tape in its entirety. Needless to say my parents were none to pleased.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 14:21 (twenty-three years ago)

robin (robin), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Once when I was young my church leaders asked me to perform in a talent show to be held in a few minutes. Having no time to prepare anything, I chose to perform the Kriss Kross's rap from a Sprite commercial. "Yo Kriss? Wassup Kross? It's an S, it's a P-R-I-T-E can" etc. It went over well until my dad drove me home, shouting the whole time how rap is crap and he is so ashamed to ahve a daughter who likes it. And it's all gone downhill from there.

Fivvy (Fivvy), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 15:26 (twenty-three years ago)

this is a weird thread, hip hop is 2-3 generations in by now. some of the people who met at a run dmc (or beastie boys) show have kids in high school.

helpsuit, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 20:34 (twenty-three years ago)

When I was 13, I was afraid my dad would get mad at me for listening to Eazy-E. He asked what kind of words E used, and I said "Motherfucker." My dad replied, "Son, I invented the word 'motherfucker.'"
