Odd realisation re: Dem 2's "Destiny"

The vocal "another sleepless night" etc. is, I think, sampled from that Durutti Column song on the 24 Hour Party People soundtrack! The soundtrack is playing at work and every time I heard the track (forget its name) I was totally bugged by the familiarity of the vocals. Then I realised I'd formerly heard them as sung by a distressed female cyborg, and it all clicked into place.

Am I the only person who didn't know this? And why aren't there more Durutti Column-sampling dance tracks? I think the new wave of cold-as-ice garage could work well with some of his guitar-tinkling in the background. Or is that just silly?

not silly. very good idea. i am hoping that with the rekindling of DC interest, all those influenced by the sensual sounds of Vini get to ride in the slipstream

i don't think it's silly at all. but it makes even more sense with the more, uh, germanic house.

pre-existing merger of durutti-style indie-ambience and dem 2 beat science: the beta band's "sequinsizer"

I must hear this song.

Destiny (and the Locked On comp/mix) was the apex of UKG/2 step for me. I haven't cared for much since. Does anyone want to recommend some recent stuff?

Tim, I can confirm for you that the original title of "Destiny" was "Sleepless". Pure Groove had it in their bins and lots of people came in asking for "Dance With Me" (sic). so the shop was looking to get that record.

eventually they came to the realisation they'd had it in stock all along. when in-house label Locked On picked it up for official release, Dem 2 retitled the track to "Destiny (Sleepless)".

I always assumed that it was a tracy chapman sample...it definately has her painfully shy, distinctive twang...

the DC record in question features (i think) samples from both the Chapman and Redding versions of the song.. i could be wrong tho'

re recommendations of goodstuff on the ukg scene now i'd plump wholeheartedly for anything by dizzee rascal, wiley's gunshot riddim, benga's skank and donae'o's "my philosophy (bounce)" - there's still a lot of interesting music out threre

Not heard the 24HPP soundtrack but that Durutti Column track is "Otis", isn't it? So it's Mr Redding providing - roundaboutly - the Dem 2 vox.
