MTV/VH1 Video Montage Ads C/D?

You know those ads where they take a bunch of shots from videos and put up together with a big dynamic song behind 'em? Like the VH1 one where everybody's dancing around to Shifty Shellshock and Oakenfold's "Stars"? I LOVE THOSE ADS. The best was one with "Stay Together For The Kids" playing in the background for MTV. They give me this back-shivering rush seeing the big ol' SPECTRUM of artists all together and getting a sense of the POP MOMENT in its entirety and I love every band even the ones that suck. Cuz all these images, all these bands are happening NOW. I dunno, can anybody else relate?

would a recent one be the VH1 commercial that's promoting some AOL thing with the Donnas playing in the background as they show snippets of The Used, Jimmy Eat World and like 2 other bands?

haven't seen that one. But usually these spots aren't promoting anything more than the station itself and just the idea of Here's All The Amazing Crap You'll See On Our Station. They do a good job of making it seem really Important (the Blink song made it sound damn near GENERATION DEFINING), especially compared to some shot of Kelsey Grammer and David Schwimmer doing the twist like the networks use.

i know what you're talkin bout. i guess i would call them "Self-Promoting Video Montage Ad Spots". can't say that it's really impacted me in any way but they are fun to watch as well as listen to. sometimes they play crap tho and you begin to wonder about the modern state of music.

All I know is that MTV2's "self promotion ads" are way better
then 90% of the videos they play. And they're not montages,
but totally diverse conceptual pieces.

yea you're abslutely correct on that one. they featured the french kicks in of those ad spots and i thought for a second that maybe the station was improving but i was proven wrong since i have seen a french kicks video ONCE on mtv2 and it was at like 2:15 in the morning.

Dud. They assume that fast edits == "artsy", while not realizing that fast edits == "we assume our audience is made up of 12-year old crack-smkoing Power Rangers fans with the attention span of paranoid ferrets..."

MTV Europe used to have AMAZING video montage clips - often their connection to MTV was actually quite tenuous e.g. you would just get the mTV ident at the end with no actual message or anything.

three years pass...
um...this is a bit disconnected from the topic in a way, but i was hoping someone could tell me what the name of a song for one of MTV Europe's advertisements was a few years ago...where this French woman was singing in the song (in French)...i really need to get that song!!

Thanks

HBO has the most insufferably pretentious montage ads, especially when scored by a Coldplay song
