Hating music/musicians for reasons completely unrelated to the music...C/D?

Such as hating a band because of their fans, their stupid looking merchandise, because you believe them to be a manifestation of some stereotype you hold, because their sax player stole your girlfriend, etc.

What bands/artists do you hate because of something that has nothing to do with their music?

What reasons do you hate them for?

Etc.

Also, is this classic or dud or classic when you are doing it but dud when anyone else does, or something else?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 March 2003 14:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I dislike Muse primarily because of the singer's stupid hair.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Cylob. I wrote him an e-mail saying his stuff was good and then he wrote back in huge letters calling me a cunt and to stop bothering him. Don't know if he was trying to be funny or something but it made me think twice about getting any more of his stuff.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - I can stand their music but something about them just winds me up the wrong way. I think it's the whole nipple piercings and tats thing and the way a lot of people I get on with but whom I don't really admire in the least seem to be obsessed with them.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I just wish the Chili Peppers would wear clothes occasionally.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

The Smiths - always hated Smiths fans when growing up (that depressive melancholic schtick always read more like effete, middle-class elitism to me), plus remember seeing them performing The Boy With A Thorn In His Side on Top Of The Pops and Morrissey wearing a fake hearing aid, with daffodils hanging ot of his arse and thinking: "Not a bad song but Mozza, I detest you." Also loathe the way that people at dinner parties nowadays all agree on how "brilliant" they were despite owning a combined total of 20 CDs... Some great lyrics and licks, but I can't stand them...

Dave Stelfox, Monday, 17 March 2003 15:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Hate and Love are irrational therefore Classic!

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I quite like Mystikal, but refuse to play him on my show b/c he's been charged with sexual assault. Irrationally, I continue to play Jerry Lee Lewis.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:46 (twenty-three years ago)

the whole nipple piercings and tats thing
that's alot of bands

dyson (dyson), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I love the Manic Street Preachers, but I fucking hate Nicky Wire. I hate his lack of tact, I abhor his quasi-Stalinist politics, but most of all, I can't stand how bloody INFANTILE his lyrics are compared to the genius of Richey Edwards. Argh. Kill kill kill. Otherwise, the Manics are quite good.

Iggy Pop always seemed like a bit of a bastard to me. Didn't he endorse Reagan once? But maybe that's just his way of trying to stay edgy.

soundnfury, Monday, 17 March 2003 17:29 (twenty-three years ago)

dud. bastards make the best music. people should grow out of hating bands based on heir fans.

chaki (chaki), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic.

Irrational and Classic.

Wish I did it more often, it'd save me a lot of money.

mei (mei), Monday, 17 March 2003 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

chaki is right. real "geniuses" have huge egos not "problems to work through and solutions to come up with."

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 17 March 2003 18:54 (twenty-three years ago)

ilm shocker, i agree entirely with jess and chaki.

also, I remember trying to keep a straight face at work (and being sympathetic) when a co-worker became upset and despondent about Rick Springfield's domestic abuse charges -- said co-worker stopped listening to all of his Rick Springfield records forever, because for him, the Dream was over -- no more Superhero Confidential.

also, Ike and Tina were far surperior to Tina Turner solo -- which is stands self evident beyond if Ike Turner was a monster or not.

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:04 (twenty-three years ago)

(I love "We Don't Need Another Hero" and "Better Be Good To Me".)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

(that said, i should say that i have not been able to listen to the new massive attack since the rumors started that 3d had been arrested for kiddie porn. some things still stick out in my mind as bridges too far. pete townshend is sort of a gray area, but i never much liked the who to begin with.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

a guy in this one band got an ex-girlfriend of mine pregnant. After that I sold their 7".

hstencil, Monday, 17 March 2003 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

haha that's perfectly reasonable tho. hating musicians for PERSONAL reasons is totally classic.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:11 (twenty-three years ago)

oh and another dude in another band slept with an ex-girlfriend of mine while we were still "going out" (uh, to some extent). Funnily enough, the year before I was cleaning out Cosloy's office at Matador (or as he called it, "Demo Quality Inspector" or something like that), and got pre-revenge by throwing his band's shitty tape/CD/whatever it was in the trash.

hstencil, Monday, 17 March 2003 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

and that band was...interpol.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Nope. This band records for Teenbeat, that's all I'll say.

hstencil, Monday, 17 March 2003 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

that band was king kong = hstencil's ex = lisa carver SHOCKAH = hstencil = costes SHOCKAH!!!

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

(damn crossposts)

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic: Hate- Dashboard Confessional because the singer is freakishly short (in my mind he's Danny Devito). Hate- Fishbone - saw them when I was 15 and I got unimaginably groped there. Hate - Spin Doctors when I was in Jr. high band class (I played the oboe and sax) the clarinetist next to me would not fucking stop singing Two Princes.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I would never ever throw out a King Kong record, gygax!

The idea of coupling with Lisa Carver is almost as hideous to me as the idea of the ex-girlfriend I'm writing about (not the first once-pregnant one, she was cool).

hstencil, Monday, 17 March 2003 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh no! Carey-hates-my-fav-band(Fishbone)-shockah!

Was it a band member what groped you?

And you should hate Spin Doctors, 'cause they totally suck moose scrotum.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

It's quite lucky, because usually bands I have intense personal problems with, such as, say, the irritating head-up-ass the-world-revolves-around-us mewling punchable screenhogging dullard self-satisfied painfully unfunny cunts that make up Ash, usually possess jack shit in the way of actual "talent".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

i sold all my records from a certain record label the day after the owner/artist left a really, really, really poor impression of himself at a lunch with him and a friend of mine on his label.

poorly worded sentences ROX()RZ U R AWL STR8.

remember when i sold my King Kong Funny Farm 7" on eBay, i think you chuckled at the description: "Lisa Carver (Rollerderby, Suckdog) got a piece of Ethan Buckler (ex-Slint), maybe you should too!"

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:24 (twenty-three years ago)

nickalicious, shame on you for dissin' your granola-eating bretheren.

oops (Oops), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Spin Doctors has been on my top 5 most hated bands list for a while with reasons due to their craptasticular music. I imagine I at one time liked Fishbone since I paid to go to a show. No I don't believe it was a Fishbone band member, but who knows since they were in the crowd enough.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Bretheren of Nickalicious, Spin Doctors are not.

(this post brought to you by Hooked on Phonics, the Yoda Edition)

I asked that Carey 'cause once at a Fishbone show Angelo (singer) was crowd-surfing and accidentally(?) grabbed on tight to my mantitty, and it hurt something evil. But he apologized later.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

hahaha, I remember that gygax! Too bad you sold it. I can't believe they played here a few weeks ago and I didn't go (but I did go to Jen's party so whatchoogonnado).

When I was in high school, I got a letter printed in Rolling Stone about how bad the Spin Doctors sucked.

hstencil, Monday, 17 March 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Spin Doctors: the group that everyone on ILM can agree sux donkey balls?

oops (Oops), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I bet Dan Perry likes 'em. Hahhahahahaha.

hstencil, Monday, 17 March 2003 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Hate - Spin Doctors when I was in Jr. high band class (I played the oboe and sax) the clarinetist next to me would not fucking stop singing Two Princes.

I hate that song, heard it a million times, so I hate them for the music but even if I had never heard a thing by them I'd have hated them anyway.

BECAUSE OF THE BEARD.

It would probably even get in the way of him sucking donkey balls.

mei (mei), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:35 (twenty-three years ago)

No, it gets in the way of others *noticing* that he is sucking donkey balls

oops (Oops), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

So what sort of horrors do you think are hiddenly being suckled behind those Santa-beards in ZZ Top I wonder?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

oops (Oops), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate Lou Reed because John Cale's solo albums were so much better and nobody else seems to think so.
