What was the first record you bought, if you don't count kiddie records and such? I think mine was Bangles' Greatest Hits, or something by 2 Unlimited. Is there anyone who has purchased only cool records right from the beginning?

Oh god - first single - Pat'n'Mick "Shake Your Body Down" (or something) I was 9 but that's no excuse really is it?
First album - Now 17 but it took a few years for me to get The Prodigy Experience for Christams when I was twelve and then I think I bought Run DMC - Tougher Than Leather for 50p in an Our Price bucket, so maybe that's the first album by one artist that I bought myself.

My big brother gave me "a web of sound" when i was in kindergarten if i promised to not touch his records anymore. this was like 1970 probably. I played "pictures and designs" daily for the next 4 years,Then flipped it over and listened to "faded picture" for the first time. I used to read the stupid poem on the back over and over "sticks sticks and eight are ten..." I slept with that record. The first I ever bought with money was "Humple pie live at the filmore" (I still love steve marriot)

Yes. It was 'Dire Straits Brothers In Arms' and I still like it, in theory, but I haven't heard it for years. A decade maybe.

I bought it because I wanted something to play on my ghetto blaster, which I'd only bought for copying Sinclair Spectrum (computer) games. The write up in Kays catalogue said it had sold multi-millions and I naively thought 'if that many people like it, it must be good'. First and last time.

I have a strong feeling Dire Straits is NOT an ILM band.

First Album, I think, was Jaggerz' WE WENT TO DIFFERENT SCHOOLS TOGETHER. I could be wrong, but it was right..about...then...

The earliest record I can really remember going into a record store and buying was Public Enemy's "Yo! Bum Rush The Show!"
A pretty bad start for a record collection. Bleh.

Before that I did get some tapes of various classical music, I remember my favorites being Mussorgsky and Mozart's piano sonatas.

But the first single was less so - Status Quo's 'What you're proposing'.
