What's up with the length of time between a song being created and then being sampled getting shorter and shorter?

Inelegantly phrased, but you know what I mean. The Lil' Kim sampling of Clipse boggled me because the Clipse is still on the charts, but I just heard the new Beyonce, which samples 50 Cent 'In Da Club'. AND THEN I HEARD THE NEW PUFFY/MARY J WHICH SAMPLES THE SAME SONG! (and I thought 'Wanksta' had better sampling potential.)

So what does this mean? With current events going the way they are, I'm feeling like it's another example of things speeding up until they self-destruct. Maybe it's not that important, though.

two thorts:

a. it has everything to do with entertainment lawyers cautioning their clients against sampling anything that isn't owned by their parent company.

b. the majority of current rap/R&B is actually programmed/created not sampled in the main, so there will still be a steady stream of material out there for lesser lights (and a few geniuses) to cull.

50 cent = Interscope (Universal), Beyonce = Columbia (Sony), Mary J = MCA (Universal), Puffy = Arista (BMG, I think.)

Collusion?

puffy can sample any goddamn thing he wants to. ($$)

no matter who you are, it's easier to sample something from a fellow hip-hop aritst who will grant all rights than some old codger (or worse, multiple codgers) who might not, thereby landing you in legal hot water. (look at the tracklisting of any puffy cd, and most tracks feature anywhere between 3 and 10 "writers" credits.)

anyway i don't really think of the beyonce track as a 50 cent sample, more a sporty thievz-stylee response, which shouldn't really count

I don't know what's more embarassing: studying Puffy's tracklisting or having a photo of Mase on your website.
