Really struggling with The Faint's 'Dance macabre'
Sounds like really bad Soft Cell to me. God it's awful. Really bad Flock of Seagulls even.Do they have good haircuts?
Jesus, there's just been a bad Van Halen riff too....

panico (panico), Monday, 17 March 2003 22:32 (twenty-three years ago)

im going to have to agree with you but your soft cell and flock of seagull comparisons dont work. bottom line: the faint just try way too hard and you can actually HEAR them doing it.

chaki (chaki), Monday, 17 March 2003 22:36 (twenty-three years ago)

it's not Soft Cell in general. Just "Sex Dwarf." Though unlike y'all I'm totally fine with a band spending its career trying to rewrite "Sex Dwarf."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 17 March 2003 22:38 (twenty-three years ago)

the Faint's pinnacle is "Worked Up So Sexual" IMO.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 17 March 2003 22:38 (twenty-three years ago)

wait, I thought Good Charlotte and Bright Eyes and Dashboard Confessional and Saves the Day were all from Omaha??

Aaron A., Monday, 17 March 2003 23:13 (twenty-three years ago)

and 311 and cursive

chaki (chaki), Monday, 17 March 2003 23:44 (twenty-three years ago)

"Worked Up.." is a frickin creepy song

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 17 March 2003 23:47 (twenty-three years ago)

threeway tie between cursive/good life, bright eyes and the faint. saddle creek brings pain to my ears -- and when people get all down on Indie, I imagine this what is what they are talking about.

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 00:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Dashboard Confessional - Boca Raton, FL
Saves the Day - Princeton, NJ

Sorry to nitpick...for some odd reason, i feel the need to stick up for emo posterboys. =]

I agree (mostly) with jack. I think The Faint especially don't really do much to help the reputation of the Omaha music scene, but still, good bands do come out of there. Rilo Kiley for starters. And Saddle Creek, I feel like it's more their exposure (thank you Mr. Oberst) than their music that hurts my ears. Of course, this is all IMHO.

PMK (PMK), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 00:33 (twenty-three years ago)

JC = OTM

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 00:37 (twenty-three years ago)

(btw i had no idea this is where these bands are all from)

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 00:38 (twenty-three years ago)

ha ha ha, but I still love Simon Joyner and the Bruces, even if the rest of Omaha seems to be sucked into the Saddle Creek black hole.

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 00:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Simon Joyner is ace

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 00:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Attention Nitpicker: Rilo Kiley are from Los Angeles, California, not Omaha, Nebraska.

rilo kiley, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 00:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Lucky for L.A.

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 00:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Chainsaw kittens...wait that was Kansas wasnt it?

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 01:06 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, they were kansas. weren't the coctails originally from nebraska though? i dont think it was omaha, but . . .

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 01:08 (twenty-three years ago)

also, add to bad omaha bands, lullaby for the working glass. midbrowariffic!

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 01:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Rural Nebraska is unreal! I spent a Xmas with a friends family there in a town of about 60 people. You could buy a house for like $3000. It had one bar that was spotless and preserved from the beginning of time with dips in the bar where 75 years of beer bottles had eroded the wood and the local dudes were actual dudes who worked the rodeo until they were disabled and went on welfare or strung fencing for the ranches for $1.25 an hr (this was the eighties). They had a juke box with totally alien country kick your ass music. And they were all on smack and wore yellow silk kerchiefs around their necks. Lots of guns. it was my most frightning week ever in America. A place this strange should be spitting out dozens of great bands.

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 01:47 (twenty-three years ago)

It's not Omaha, but For Against are worthy (and from Lincoln, Nebraska)

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 01:54 (twenty-three years ago)

would it be rude to mention that rilo kiley was one of the most tedious moments in opening band history?

2nd only to j*hn v*nd*rsl*c* who was so unbearable i had to leave the theater (and it was a big theater)... he was sandwiched between two absurdly talented performers (m.ward and howe gelb - who put on such an amazing show and they both played together for an encore = pure bliss)... he had a warr guitar in his band, it was dreadful... oh yeah, he couldn't go 2 songs without plugging his "latest CD" or his next show... my gawd it was that bad (and this was a few years ago and it still smarts that he made money off us good people).

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 02:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I heart JV so much gygax you have made me very sad :(

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 03:16 (twenty-three years ago)

i know you do... and so does britt... i don't get it at all... tell me though does he still have a warr guitar in his FIVE PIECE BAND?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 04:00 (twenty-three years ago)

do you mean the Chapman stick? naw that guy's gone

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 04:05 (twenty-three years ago)

out of curiosity, john (and to fully disclose, I like some of your stuff, but dont like Vanderslice's work), what do like JV's recordings and songs? Show me the other side. I am genuinely curious.

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 04:26 (twenty-three years ago)

LA...whoops...sorry bout that. the whole saddle creek thing tripped me up. that's what i get for shootin' my mouth off

carry on...

PMK (PMK), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 05:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Simon Joyner is coma inducing.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 05:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Chainsaw Kittens are from Oklahoma. Like Kansas, but it has a pointy end.

paul cox (paul cox), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 05:19 (twenty-three years ago)

paul is very right.

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 05:30 (twenty-three years ago)

also, nothing better than a good coma once in awhile -- very restful.

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 05:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Simon Joyner, he's a good 'un. And I like the Faint too, they can keep trying hard as far as I am concerned.

Now Bright Eyes...ergh.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 06:21 (twenty-three years ago)

nine months pass...
who else likes the faint?

cozen. (Cozen), Saturday, 27 December 2003 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to like them but then I saw them live for the second time

Sonny A. (Keiko), Saturday, 27 December 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)
