I would drop the Chapterhouse at the end and put in a nice gospel/nu-soul/powerful ballad. Maybe 'Bridge over Troubled Water' by Aretha. It is for your girl afterall!

And maybe splice up the '77 revival a bit more. It runs like a classic rock radio station.

It builds nice and slow. I would add more romance to it not detract. You should open up with a Lenny Bruce or Richard Pryor monologue; funny and political! Bonus points!

Suzanne is a great song, but don't start the disc out w/that if her name is Suzanne.

Also that Blonde Redhead song is very nice...sounds like a nice mix w/the right balance of gentleness & non. I would give it many a pleasant listen and submit to a few consequential swoons, but from above comments it sounds like I am the world's only girl who falls for mixes.

i'm not saying girls don't fall for mixtapes - i'm saying that most of them would be just as content with the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack, or, to a lesser extent, the latest Now That's What I Call Music compilation.

Good job dropping 'We Are Going To Be Friends' but you should have slipped on 'Fell In Love With a Girl' instead. And if you're going to go aggressive/obvious with the titles/lyrics (and I think you should), you might want to leave 'Psycho Killer' off . . .

I make the same mix for more than one person all the time, but only when I think they won't find out...ie with pen pals who don't know each other. If it's for the usual coterie then I get called "jerkface".

The only problem about fell in love with a girl is that it is basically about a guy who fell in love with a slut and is repremanding himself. Probably better than Psycho Killer, but not by much.

I was also seriously considering Ooh, Baby, Baby by Smokey Robinson, but that song is basically about estrangement and a fellow hoping to get back into his girl's good graces again. Till then, he's cryin'

Like i said above, she is very cool and intelligent, but she isn't an artsy music chick. She sings along to Journey, if you know what I mean. There is nothing wrong with that, she just asked me to make her a tape of the kind of things I like. The trouble is that I want to expose her to the things I like in a way that will not require a HUGE leap. I am trying to meet her half-way if you know what I mean. Hence, not Throbbing Gristle, Burrough's Tape experiments, or Pan Sonic tracks.

There are quite a few women who are reading this thread, what do you like about mixes? Do you have any particular preferences?

Every girlfriend and or wife I've ever had loved soundtracks. Why is that?

I'd say bring back the Chapterhouse, but I'm biased and you are not dating me.
