American Music Collection

As you may or may not know I work with Exeter University's American music Collection - the second largest specialist collection of American Music available to the public in the country (I think the BBC beats us), with 10,000 or so records covering jazz, blues, country and rock n roll spanning the history of American recorded music, from Quakers onwards. Except for the last 20 years. From which there is diddly squat. Since Talking Heads and the early 80s, the only albums we have are 3ft High & Rising, Nation Of Millions, Dirty, Green, and Cowboy Junkies. Your task is simple - choose one album of American Music from the last 20 years that ought to be added to the collection post haste.

Bleeding obvious answer, but Nevermind?

Not possible as none have been made.

One of the American NOW compilations.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 12:10 (twenty-three years ago)

That was the one that leapt out at me too, Marcello. Mind you, we've not got Pet Sounds either. Go figure.

"Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)"

Nick H, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 13:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Just out of curiosity, if it's a collection of American music, why do you have the Cowboy Junkies?

I would agree with the suggestions for Nevermind and something by the Pixies.

Cotton Mather's "Kon Tiki" and Jellyfish's "Bellybutton". :-)

Madonna - The Immaculate Collection

Madonna - The Immaculate Collection

I'd rather wait for a proper (preferrably double) Madonna compilation, using the original mixes rather than those Shep Pettibone ones and including a lot of her brilliant 98-present output too.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

absolutely. Although I actually quite like the Shep mixes.
One thing she has to release is a DVD compilation including the rather fab Erotica video. Althought his featured on the last best of album, it didn't make the DVD....
Also, forget the 98 onwards stuff - what about her greatest period - the supposedly lacklustre first half of the 90s where she, IMO, produced her greatest records? Erotica, Deeper and Deeper, I Want You, Secret, Bedtime Stories.....

russ t, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I second Jazzbo's list exactly. I'd put Daydream Nation in there, too.

Not that I'm a Geirist ;-) but I'm pretty blah on that period of time as well from her. Overrated and then some.

Isnt five enough?

Most of it crap. OK, "Bedtime Stories" included some good songs, but the only thing worth keeping on "Erotica" is "Rain". The title track, along with "Justify My Love" represents the worst rubbish she ever did.

Music is supposed to be MELODIC!

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

(sounds like someones got a case of the s'posed to's)

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Jandek's Blue Corpse is essential.

Why won't it just fuck off? Eh?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 08:48 (twenty-three years ago)

you'd have to ask it, i suppose

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 10:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Geir -
Justify My Love and Erotica, apart from I Want You, are Madonna's greatest singles?!?!
And since when does music have to be melodic?!

russ t, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 10:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm afraid that would encourage the fucking thing though, jim.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 10:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie

Man or Astroman? - Destroy all Astromen

As for the rather odd inclusion of Cowboy Junkies, there is a small crossover with Canada (ie; them and Leonard 'ol misery guts' Cohen), plus a rather fantastic selection of reggae and (London) dub. Go figure.
