Once again we approach April and I've bought piss-all new records released this year. Increase my debt by recommending me some great stuff, people! Anything, any genre, just tell me why.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 12:20 (twenty-three years ago)

i've bought piss-all new records, too. i've bought plenty of records, but barely any from this year...

bonnie prince billy is quite good if you're in the mood for something very, very low-key. it's just him whispering over his guitar but it's beautiful if you're in the mood.

black box recorder is great. it's good campy disco-pop, but the words are the real treat. funny as fuck, the first song especially.

albums from this year i'm going to get: evan dando, autechre, susuma yokota, yo la tengo, manitoba. and many more...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 12:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Junior Senior.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 12:33 (twenty-three years ago)

the aisler's set - "how i learned to write backwards"
-lots of reverberated vocals, lyrics about jesus and sticking fingers up asses, melodic in a 60's pop sort of way, makes you want to clap your hands.

the soft pink truth - "do you party?"
-it's fun, has a sense of humor and causes one's hips to shake to and fro. also there's a vanity 6 cover.

cat power - "you are free"
-i actually havent swallowed the entriety of this record yet. though i've been sort of obsessed with the first three songs, "don't blame you", "free" and "good woman". it's worth getting just for those three songs. i was never a fan until now.

drystereo (drystereo), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 12:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Statues - Moloko. Fantastic music, some great songs, real drama.
Do You Party? - The Soft Pink Truth. As funky as it is funny, and sounding like nothing else on the planet. Maxi house for micro people.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 12:40 (twenty-three years ago)

St Etienne - Finisterre

Jez (Jez), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 12:59 (twenty-three years ago)

What year is this...2003? Hm...

So far, probably Ani D's Evolve. Much better than I expected, and I expected quite a bit from it.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 13:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Freeway - "Philadelphia Freeway" - I've already filled up a couple threads by myself with why I love this guy. the album's pretty solid, just a bunch of Roc-a-fella's best beats with their 2nd best rapper.

Ted Leo - "Hearts of Oak" - i think he could have come a little harder, but still, there seem to be very few folks writing tunes this strong these days.

I've been afraid to approach the new Cat Power. i'm a fan of the previous albums, particularly the Shelley/Foljahn era, but ehh...the whole cult of personality that's been built up by fans is just unsavory to me. which is a stupid reason to lose interest in the music, but i don't think it would do much for me these days anyway.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 13:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Jackie Leven 'Shining Brother Shining Sister'. a total triumph. his best since Forbidden Songs of the Dying West and Fairy Tales for Hard Men?

summerslastsound (summerslastsound), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 13:40 (twenty-three years ago)

The Majesticon's Beauty Party- but you have to see it as a RPG, not a satire

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 13:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Strangely enough, my fave records of 2003 so far are all by Norwegian acts, namely Erlend Øye, Number Seven Deli and Jessica Fletchers.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 14:10 (twenty-three years ago)

get the lightning bolt rec 'wonderful rainbow' -- it's like a colonic for yr skull

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 14:13 (twenty-three years ago)

The Majesticons, Cat Power, Zwan, Soft Pink Truth, Bonnie Prince Billie... my hand hovered over the Junior Senior album in Berwick Street but I decided against it, not really knowing what I was in for.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 14:15 (twenty-three years ago)

The Majesticons is the only new one I've bought. It's good.

Nick H, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 14:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Er um uh.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 14:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Matt you are in for fun.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 14:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, leave it then. I hate fun.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 14:31 (twenty-three years ago)

So far, MC Honky's "I Am The Messiah". However, if my predictions for the year turn out to be right, the new albums by Fallacy & Fusion and Fountains of Wayne should turn out to be 24 carat classics.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

there just isn't one is there ?!
it's q. exciting that there haven't
been any stone cold classix
we can all agree on.

i'm sure it's juat around the corner,
and most of us haven't heard the blur yet.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 14:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I've only bought a couple of new albums this year, but if you're a dirty three fan at all (especially of their older work), then I highly recommend the new one, she has no strings apollo.

Jonathan, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

The beginning of this year has been quite amazing. At least four great records came out already:

Massive Attack - 100th Window (dense, dark and hypnotic)
Go-Betweens - Bright Yellow Bright Orange (light wistful sunny Aussie songwriter pop)
Bonnie Prince Billy - Master and Everyone (Nick Drake is still alive!)
Cat Power - You Are Free (my fave of them all, probably Chan's most mature record yet)

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 15:07 (twenty-three years ago)

these are the only new records I've bought this year:

No Neck Blues Band, Ever Borneo (SERES, SER-201) LP +7"
No Neck Blues Band, Intonomacy (Sound@One) CD
Nautical Almanac, Rejerks Volume One (Hear See, HS011) CD

hstencil, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 15:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the only album I've bought that was released this year is Nick Cave's new piece, so that wins by default. It is okay, not as much Warren Ellis as I would have hoped. The DVD is really silly, in one fun scene Blixa drinks a glass of wine and does one swing-legged scarecrow dance in the course of about five seconds. But I'm having a hard time endorsing the whole package --- if you want it you prolly own it already.

Fivvy (Fivvy), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 15:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Ted Leo
Xiu Xiu
Killer Mike "A.D.I.D.A.S."
Lightning Bolt

scott m (mcd), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 15:21 (twenty-three years ago)

The new Bent album's rather great, and the last Massive Attack one's grown on me.

russ t, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Heh... I forgot 100th Window already! Add that to my list.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 15:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Aereogramme, Sleep and Release
Tribalistas, s/t
Francine, 28 Blue Plastic Versions of You (something like that)
Hall and Oates, Do It For Love (no really, it's good)
Sevara Nazarkhan, Yol Bolsin
Killer Mike, Monster

Neudonym, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 15:41 (twenty-three years ago)

100th Window (beautiful).

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 15:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Turbonegro-Scandinavian Leather

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 15:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Moloko
Goldfrapp
Audio Bullys
Zongamin
Black Box Recorder

Biggest LP disappointment of the year so far? Stephen Malkmus. Bag of wank.

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 15:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Agreed - that Malkmus album is dreadful.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

As I stated elsewhere. Deerhoof and Aisler's set for me.

Scott Seward, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

lightning bolt roxx u r all pussies

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

jOe - do you like the Goldfrapp album?
I think it's fucking dreadful. And I love Goldfrapp.

russ t, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Junior Senior are much harder than Lightning Bolt.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

(i've been bored by the deerhoof, scott. only listened to it a few times, but it hasn't hit me nearly as hard as that last one did...)

my (predictable) discs:

blood brothers, burn piano island, burn
a.r.e. weapons, a.r.e. weapons
lightning bolt, wonderful rainbow
angels of light, everything is good here/please come home
killer mike, monster
calla, televise

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:47 (twenty-three years ago)

jackie o motherfucker - "change"

marcg (marcg), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:49 (twenty-three years ago)

russ, I think it's superb (bar the final track but that's why they inveted the stop button). And although I enjoyed it I was never madly in love with their first LP - so it's completely understandable that people were expecting another "Felt Mountain" and as a result are very disappointed

I love Black Cherry, I love the camp as tits torch song title track, I love the abrasive and grotty synth noises on "Train", I love the disco beats of "Twist", I love the atmosphere of "Hairy Trees", I love the fact that Ms Goldfrapp has cheered the fuck up... etc etc

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

So a.r.e Weapons got good, Yanc3y? How is it different from the single--I think it was a single--from a year and a half ago? I thought that was a crappy Suicide ripoff, would I like this any better?

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

A.R.E. Weapons got really, really good. There were two singles in 2001 ("Street Gang" and "NY Muscle"), which are both on the new record. NY Muscle still blows, and Street Gang is pretty much the same (which is a good thing -- it's a great song, although their one true Suicide rip). But the first and last songs on the album ("Don't Be Scared" and "Hey World") are, honestly, two of the best songs I have ever heard. Loud rock songs with lots of '80s synths and huge guitar and drum sounds and really simplistic lyrics that sound great within the context of the song. On a personal level, I still hate them, but the record is really, really amazing. It'll probably be my No. 1 choice by the end of the year (and actually it probably is now. I don't listen to much else anymore, except a few Killer Mike cuts).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 17:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like to hear both the new Deerhoof and the new Lightning Bolt.

hstencil, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 17:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh wait – I got t.A.tU.'s album and it is the tops. If I was in junior high right now, I'd be in heaven! How could I have forgotten about it?

Fivvy (Fivvy), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 17:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks, Yanc3y. Still been too distracted to give the Calla a proper listening, by the way. Some day!

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Turin Brakes - Ether Song

zilverberg.tk (zilverberg.tk), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

the only one I got was Interpol

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 17:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Stephen Malkmus & the Jick, "Pig Lib"

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 17:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Yanc3y, see now I had never heard Deerhoof before this one, so my expectations were nil. It's short and sweet to me. I didn't really have a chance to get bored. I love the first song especially. I wanna hear the AOL album, but I'm guessing it just sounds like the other ones or could M.G. really change his stripes that much since the last one? And killer mike so far is making my single list. I wanna get the whole album, though.

Scott Seward, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 17:56 (twenty-three years ago)

oh and like I said somewhere else yet again, the Deerhoof album "sounds" really good. I love the production and ditto the aisler's set album.

Scott Seward, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 17:58 (twenty-three years ago)

The AOL album is very similar to Since I Love You (that was the last one, right?), which to me is a good thing. It's very pretty and I love Gira's voice. Some gorgeous songs. As the year goes on it'll drop farther and farther down my list.

The Killer Mike record has three AMAZING songs ("Akshun," "A.D.I.D.A.S." & "All 4 U") and the rest is pretty great too.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 17:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Evan Dando, BABY I'M BORED.

Thanks again, Mr M.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 17:59 (twenty-three years ago)

got some tracks from the Junior Senior album and listening now - pleasantly surprised! i think Tom could well be OTM with this one - DO NOT LISTEN IF YOU HATE CLEVER FUN!

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 18:01 (twenty-three years ago)

the three tracks i've randomly downloaded from it all sound better than 'Move Your Feet' - surely not just good luck on my part

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 18:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I forgot to mention the Xiu Xiu record, which, as a whole, isn't as strong as Knife Play, but it's high marks ("Sad Pony Guerilla Girl," "20,000 Deaths for Elian Gonzalez," "Fast Car" and "Ian Curtis Wishlist") are better than anything on the last record.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 18:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Wasteland - Amen Fire - Transparent
DJ Scud and Panacea present The Redeemer - Hardcore Owes Us Money - Position Chrome
Barbara Morgenstern - Nichts Muss - Monica/Labels
Ogurusu Norihide - Modern - Carpark
Buck 65 - Square - Warner
Northern State - Dying In Stereo - Wichita

Dave Stelfox, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 18:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah stevem Move Your Feet is about halfway up the pecking order for me.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 18:26 (twenty-three years ago)

equal props to kilian for the Black Box Recorder check - the random selection tracks i grabbed from it are FANTASTIC

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 22:25 (twenty-three years ago)

top whatever of the year so far:

1. lightning bolt
2. dj scud "retrospective"
3. ted leo
4. something i'm forgetting

things which will likely be very very high (if released): dizzee rascal/wiley kat; luomo

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 22:28 (twenty-three years ago)

not that i've too many 03's to pick from, but
--- SUPERSILENT - 6 (Rune Gr.) ---
because? for one, it very finely shows that they can sculpt their from-supersilent-to-noisy electric-jazz-ambient-prog wide-awake-states out of studio stuff as well (as out of live material)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 23:02 (twenty-three years ago)

New Wet Kojak, This Is The Glamorous

it's not staggeringly great, but deserves SOME recognition.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 23:10 (twenty-three years ago)

So far, Calexico's Feast of Wire, although I have very, very high hopes for both the forthcoming albums by Firewater and Killing Joke.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 23:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Black Box Recorder is spine-twingling brilliance, also Clearlake, Junior Senior and The Faint (possibly only a 2003-release in the UK, but mehh)

alexfack (alexfack), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 00:18 (twenty-three years ago)

the aisler's set - "how i learned to write backwards"
-lots of reverberated vocals, lyrics about jesus and sticking fingers up asses

eh??

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 00:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I have listened to precisely zero 20-oh-3 albums and am determined not to do so until mid-year, though the new Lucinda Williams will tempt me. The upside is that I've caught up on dozens of older records that I should've got around to earlier (mostly middle-sized names like the Pretty Things and the Zombies, but also some bleedingly obvious stuff like Layla).

B.Rad (Brad), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 00:42 (twenty-three years ago)

BBR sounds even better after you've seen them live - in a good way, you understand. Nixey in red PVC trousers... it's like I'm 16 again. Yessah.

But most my mad props been done for me - Cat Power, BPB, Majesticons, Tatu, Aislers, Aereogramme, Calexico, Turbonegro (I been converted by a Train Of Flesh...)

Two others no-one has yet gone for - Electric Music AKA and Dave Tyack. AKA are soft, quiet 'atmospheric indie', in a big huggy way, and Dave Tyack is backing music for a narration of Rip Van Winkle, and as such is dead lovely.

But the best album of the year is The Hidden Cameras. On which I must write more a bit later.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 00:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and Ooberman, which I've listened to much more than I can justify... but Hand That Gets Burnt is a tune...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 00:55 (twenty-three years ago)

jesus is mentioned in the first line of the aislers set cd, not anywhere else i think? a lot of the other lyrics are lifted from various sources-morrissey, motown, leonard cohen.

keith (keithmcl), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 00:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Up In Flames by Manitoba is pretty great Beach Boys/MBV tainted electronic stuff. I haven't decided if it is a classic yet, but I am certainly going to give it more listens so I can find out.

The Blood Brothers album came out today, so everyone should buy it because I wanted to see them on MTV. Lots of other things mentioned here are great like the Aisler's Set album and Lightning Bolt. Killer Mike and Xiu Xiu are really good if you pare them down to about half their length ("Walnut House" from the Xiu Xiu album is the absolute worst song I have heard all year). I think Tok Tok v. Soffy O officially came out last year, but it makes my best of the year list for this year because it didn't last year. And even though I included it on my last year's list, Dark Falcon by Lucky Dragons makes it too. And then there's the amazing Laddio Bolocko comp...

Lots of good stuff so far this year, but hands down the best thing I've heard is Karuki Zamen Kuri No Hana by Shiina Ringo, which hasn't sounded quite as good as it did when I was driving to see my sister last week feeling deadly sick and in a cough syrup daze, but still sounds better than everything else without the OTC drugs.

Miranda (Miranda), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 01:54 (twenty-three years ago)

The Lightning Bolt album is fun. I still haven't even sorted out my faves of 2002.

original bgm, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 02:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Sean Paul - Dutty Rock

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 05:21 (twenty-three years ago)

It's so early in the year, I'm still catching up to last year. (Am I banished for admitting that?)

I like the Sondre Lerche album a lot more than I thought I would the first few times I heard it. The new Nick Cave is likewise growing on me -- even the songs I thought were lame at first. And, weirdly enough, Fischerspooner. It's not going to end up on my top ten of the year, but I'm shocked (and nearly appalled) to find that I don't hate it.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 05:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I have to assume we're only including albums already commercially released, because no one has yet mentioned Elephant. There's no way I'm the only one who likes it!

I also stand behind Calla's Televise, Erlend Oye's Unrest, Nick Cave's Nocturama, Entrance's The Kingdom of Heaven Must Be Taken By Storm, and a few others...

paul cox (paul cox), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 05:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Architecture in Helsinki - "Fingers Crossed"
-its a melbourne indiepop band that are soooo good. like high llamas crossed with a bit of belle&sebastian crossed with some sea&cake.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 06:29 (twenty-three years ago)

The Erlend Oye album is pretty good, but the large HFF (Hoxton Fin Factor) prevents it from being truly, truly great.

j0e (j0e), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 10:24 (twenty-three years ago)

1. Kelly Osbourne - Shut Up
2. Cradle of Filth - Damnation and a day
3. Zwan - Mary Star of the Sea

But most of the albums I've got so far, haven't been released in 2003.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 10:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm listening to the Junior Senior album and it took me as far as Shake Your Coconuts to get it... they're like the Euro-rap B52s, aren't they? Tremendously enjoyable stuff.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I shall be firing up SoulSeek for that tonight...

j0e (j0e), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 17:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Architecture in Helsinki - "Fingers Crossed"

some might also say "Maher Shalal Hash Baz discovers the drum machine" or "Langley Schools Musical Project play the Darla Records hits". or some might say "ok-to-good tweeish pop tunes frequently spoiled by poor playing, faux-naivete, and rubbish arrangements"..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 20 March 2003 02:25 (twenty-three years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 20 March 2003 06:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Nickalicious I'm very much looking forward to getting Evolve - if I had to pick again Revelling/Reckoning would have made my top 5 for 2001 (and that was a very good year for albums anyway). From all the positive reports I wouldn't be surprised if Evolve turns out to be my favourite album of the year.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 20 March 2003 06:44 (twenty-three years ago)

'Equilibrium' - Matthew Shipp

Andrew L (Andrew L), Thursday, 20 March 2003 09:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm going curiously lukewarm on Junior Senior now, it's still GLORY but when i think about maybe listening to it my teeth start to ache.

alexfack (alexfack), Thursday, 20 March 2003 12:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I'm partial to the Blood Brothers album (going to see them on Friday and very very excited) and the re-release (does this count) of Alex Chilton's "...Flies On Sherbert...".

Outkast double album

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 20 March 2003 13:53 (twenty-three years ago)

this band i saw recently at the betsey trotwood in london called Vic Thrill from america. Amazing amalgamtion of electronica with a cool drummer, surf guitar, wall of effects and rock.

Mr Monket (apn99), Thursday, 20 March 2003 13:56 (twenty-three years ago)

heh, whoops, no no there shoulda been a "the idea of" in there

Alterboy: no-fi.
I'd been avoiding all of the conservatorium trained postrock/electronica for a while but felt obliged to listen to this. now i feel stupid.
if i said the microhouse tracks here wouldn't sound out of place next to Luomo? if i said the whole thing fills me with joy? if i told you i got the Martini bros on the same day and...no contest?
