...anyone heard it? Thoughts please!

A wild departure in style....or the same old dependability?

the same old dependability

Considering how the flagship band of said label makes a career out of never changing...

They're touring soon. I'm not sure whether going will irrevocably ruin them for me.

Ferg (Ferg), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 17:51 (twenty-three years ago)

They are opening for Pearl Jam on some american tour dates i think.

This makes me sad.

It just seems like a haplessly mismatched tour....and the `cocks deserve better.

Nothing changes much in seven years, does it?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 23:38 (twenty-three years ago)

If it's the "new album" I downloaded once last month, listened to and deleted immediately, I think it's safe (and sad) to say that sonically they've turned into the bands that imitate the bands that imitate them.

their last 7 years (of a 14 year career) have been spent mining a different sound then the first 7. your statement stinks of someone who doesn't know any better.

I admit I haven't paid close attention to Superchunk for many a moon but what I've heard of the recent stuff -- and I couldn't even tell you what it was called, whatever I did hear -- sure didn't sound very much like Mac and company suddenly saw the light. Besides, I thought that's why he used Portastatic as an outlet.

Amazing! But they'll tickle my brain and disturb the voices in my head. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 00:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmm... I read gygax!'s initial "challenge" a little differently: Are Superchunk Merge's flagship band anymore? Surely they're eclipsed by the Magnetic F!elds these days (who surely can't be accused of making a career out of playing the same song over and over)... Now, the MFs and Buzzcocks on tour together. That would be mighty fine.

BTW - saw them play about five years ago and they were pretty damn fine. Now a lot may have changed since then, but... The chances of their being pathetic old codgers five years ago was pretty high, and they somehow managed to dodge the bullet. Playing with Pearl Jam, on the other hand....

I believe the Fields are actually now signed to Nonesuch, so get ready for the collaboration with Kronos Quartet.

I'd imagine Spoon are probably Merge's foremost act at the moment
