This is a thread to debate the merits of the Popguns

Since their great Another Year Another Address is currently cheering me up big time and soundtracking getting a lot of work done. "Because He Wanted To" alone justifies their existence, methinks -- and the damn thing rocks.

Fave Popguns story -- the fact that one time Napalm Death's post-Mick Harris drummer, a fan of the band, sat in for them at last minute's notice for a gig, apparently with the comment, "These indie rhythms are a piece of piss."

The fact that Genesis P Orridge produced 'Snog' is also relatively belief-boggling (the hitherto-unsuspected Temple ov Psychik Youth / twee interface).

'Eugenie' and 'Snog' are both great. They always seemed like a band who would have achieved a much bigger audience if they'd followed a bit more sharpish on the heels of 'Reading, Writing & Arithmetic' / the demise of the Smiths - as it was, they were just a tiny bit out of time. I always liked the way Wendy M belted the songs out - no indieschmindie mumbling / candyfloss insubstantiality (a bit like Sarah Shannon from V Girl, in a way).

Last saw them at, uh, either the Marquee or the Borderline, back when 'Love Junky' came out; someone who v much resembled Mr Thackery of this parish kept requesting their cover of 'Can I Kick It?'.

godawful band. velocity girl is an apt comparison because they were nearly as dreadful as the popguns. love junky is always available used no matter which store you wal into because no one wants that cd to contaminate their home.

the early singles on Midnight were uniformally great, but i've heard nowt from their later, smack-addled period

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I only know the Midnight singles, but Every Dream was as about as good as indiepop songs get for me.

four years pass...

Gosh, the goddamn Popguns!!!!!!!!

I was gonna ask if anyone remembered them and then I found this one thread. I owe much to both Eugenie & Snog for getting me through the early 90's. Granted, by the time of the "Crazy" 12" it seems they'd lost something.

Bimble, Monday, 10 September 2007 03:57 (eighteen years ago)

Also my friend who was a Wedding Present fanatic loved them. Didn't they play with the Weddoes??

Bimble, Monday, 10 September 2007 03:58 (eighteen years ago)

Oh no, please don't tell me P. Orridge produced Snog. He keeps popping up everywhere! It's starting to scare me. I went looking for this song by Mark Perry (Alternative T.V.) called "Love Lies Limp" and all of a sudden, Orridge was there and I can't take it anymore.

Bimble, Monday, 10 September 2007 04:01 (eighteen years ago)

I love Genesis to my very core, make no mistake.

Bimble, Monday, 10 September 2007 04:02 (eighteen years ago)

Holy shit, weren't the Popguns from Brighton? That's where my English friend comes from.

Bimble, Monday, 10 September 2007 04:08 (eighteen years ago)

You can't even get Snog on CD? What the hell is wrong with this world?

Bimble, Monday, 10 September 2007 04:20 (eighteen years ago)

Even if you can find Snog & Eugenie on CD they'll probably be suffering from CD rot as they were made by PDO. But all but a few tracks are on the Another Year Another Address comp.

Has the singer done anything subsequently?

Mr. Odd, Monday, 10 September 2007 12:31 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know, I can't find a single thing about it by googling around. I don't remember reading anything about it, either. I'm actually quite surprised that they put out two other albums after Snog. I suppose my interest in them had waned a lot more than I would have thought.

one year passes...

Why doesn't anyone ever care about the Popguns? WHY???????????????????????????????????????????

I'm going to stage a one-man rebellion and play Snog right now, in my headphones at an appreciable volume.

Steely Dan Is Boring And Oh So Safe (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Friday, 17 October 2008 05:08 (seventeen years ago)

further to what i said above, i have since heard more of the later stuff (both proper albums are on emusic) and it's not quite as good as the first few singles. which is not to say it isn't good. i *love* still a world away

thereminimum chips (electricsound), Friday, 17 October 2008 05:13 (seventeen years ago)

o shi i forgot about the third album (which is not there). i'm assuming it's not very good

thereminimum chips (electricsound), Friday, 17 October 2008 05:15 (seventeen years ago)

I haven't heard the third album, either. I gave up after the Crazy 12", I think.

And yeah, "Still A World Away" is pop perfection, beating Stereolab in a single bound.

Randomly noticed that Eugenie, Snog, and the best of are on Spotify and am really liking finally hearing these guys, after reading about them for so long....

one year passes...

They reformed! And recorded a new album! It's called "Pop Fiction" and very nice it is.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 8 January 2015 17:49 (eleven years ago)

Yeah they've been reformed for a few years now, I saw them a couple of years ago with the Primitives/June Brides/BMX Bandits et al.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 8 January 2015 18:09 (eleven years ago)

one year passes...

Bumping for the third time in as many months a passenger in my cab has asked some variation on "holy shit, who is this?" as Eugenie was playing. Because He Wanted To really does have some special something to it.

ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Thursday, 6 October 2016 08:50 (nine years ago)

They had great energy and a special lyrical perspective. I wonder if we'll get another new album.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 6 October 2016 20:26 (nine years ago)

The new album has been recorded but probably not out til spring 2017. In the meantime a new track (Sugar Kisses) is available for listening available via The Popguns' facebook page or SoundCloud.

Well whaddya know, they put out a mellow acoustic album, "Isobar Blues", under the name The Perfect English Weather. It's very nice, I love Wendy's voice.
