(oh, and tell us why)

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

(chisel because ted leo is a great songwriter and they were a great band, but unfortunately they were around just a little too early for the current wave of "heartfelt powerpoppunk" [code word: emo] on the airwaves. and also hamstrung by ted's inability to sell out like he should have.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 18:57 (twenty-three years ago)

(i know this thread goes against some of ilm's panglossian faith in pop as an appropriate arbiter of fame but c'mon)

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 19:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Fishbone, because, well, THE ENERGY MAN!!!

Plus, a great great many musos that they were friends with (Chili Peppers, Primus, Living Colour), performed with (Henry Rollins, 311, Sublime, Janes Addiction), or influenced (No Doubt, Incubus) went on to become gigantic successes, while they stayed just below radar and continued to release bad-ass albums (that Dreamworks pooper aside) and put on balls-to-the-wall amazing concerts. Not to mention all the drama they've survived.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 19:04 (twenty-three years ago)

jess did you see that movie? (i can't remember what it was called but it was like a chisel-related documentary from a year or two ago?)

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

no, i did not. i never saw them live either, even though they lived only an hour or so from me. i saw ted play solo a few times.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

billy joel - wait, he didn't start the fire

JasonD (JasonD), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 19:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Chisel is a great choice, Jess. I tap Flaming Groovies for a similar reason -- great songwriting but general stubborness. Hyped when they first got together (according to liner notes (always suspect) anyway) and then made a shitty debut. The next album, Flamingo, is basically a Chuck Berry record, only with songs about fucking cousins rather than 14-year-olds. Then they do Teenage Head, a near-perfect blues-rock album with some fucking dirty guitars and vocals. This is all at the height of the Stones (late 60s/early 70s) who the Groovies obviously wannabe, but somehow the Groovies don't capitalize. They disappear for a while and come back five years later (1976, I think) with a perfect Merseybeat record, Shake Some Action, that's among the best pop albums I've ever heard. Basically, their timing was just all fucked up.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

my secondary choice is a guy called gerald: fucked over by 808 state, fucked over by his record compan(ies), predicting ragga-jungle a few years prior to the point where there was a "scene", unable to break out of his presupposed "arty" ghetto even though he made the best dnb album ever.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 19:20 (twenty-three years ago)

what's the name of the record?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

black secret technology: it's mad out of print, unsurprisingly.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

another problem with him having to "do it on his own": the record is mastered for shit, which means its a. not loud enough and b. everything sort of blurs together, not enough seperation between the elements of the tracks which sometimes makes for a very thick, psychedelic listen and other times just sounds thin.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 19:25 (twenty-three years ago)

right next to flaming groovies are ducks deluxe for similar though more modest reasons.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Fishbone seconded!!!

Urge Overkill

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Burzum and Mayhem may not have set the world on fire, but certain members of those bands sure knew how to set churches on fire...

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:05 (twenty-three years ago)

no one is following the rules

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:05 (twenty-three years ago)

rules were made to be broken, Jess. But here goes: Urge Overkill wrote really good songs, even two kickass drum machine ballads ("Dropout", "The Mistake") blurred the line between heartfelt and irony, kicked ass, and kicked ass. And despite oodles of press for wearing medallions or whatever, no body cared. "Saturation," "Exit The Dragon," and "Supersonic Storybook" are all total trips that freak me out every time.

my version of the greatest hits album that won't come out.
1)"The Candidate"
2)"The Kids Are Insane"
3)"Vacation In Tokyo"
4)"Stull"
5)"Goodbye To Guyville"
6)"Sister Havana"
7)"Positive Bleeding"
8)"Bottle Of Fure"
9)"Drop Out"
10) "The Break"
11) "Somebody Else's Body"
12) "The Mistake"
13) "View Of The Rain"
14) "Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon"

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:10 (twenty-three years ago)

nothing from Jesus Urge Superstar needs to be on it and I haven't heard Americruiser.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:11 (twenty-three years ago)

the soft boys.

j fail (cenotaph), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:12 (twenty-three years ago)

What rules didn't I follow? :genuinely confused:

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex is that supposed to say Kijling Joke or Killing Loke?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Kijling Loke is an Icelandic cover band.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Oddly enough, they're a tribute band for Captain an Tenille.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:47 (twenty-three years ago)

you followed the rules nick!

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 21:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I would have to say Felt. Belle and Sebastian patently ripped them off and became more successful. Imagine we could have all been bitching about how lame felt are!!

S Samson, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 22:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Albert Ayler's stuff up to his Impulse! debut. I imagine it didn't sell well, nor was it easy for him to get gigs, but it radically changed what other jazz musicians were doing at the time, esp. Coltrane.

hstencil, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 22:07 (twenty-three years ago)

sure second A Guy Called Gerald

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 22:19 (twenty-three years ago)

What happened to Viv from A Guy Called Gerald?

S Samson, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 22:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Right, just for that, so that there is no mistaking their name....

The Gathering... mailing list... Follow The Leaders... never heard of these bands, d'oh ...but they did set the world on fire, Alex?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 23:36 (twenty-three years ago)

You just haven't felt the burn yet, heathen.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 23:37 (twenty-three years ago)

and we must Honour the Fire.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 23:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Honor the itching, burning sensation.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 23:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Americruiser isn't that bad, it has a few good songs. I think "Ticket to LA" should definitely be on a career spanning compilation.

Their first album really sux and may be the worse recording that Albini ever did. There is nothing on it that is anygood, but you get it for free if you get the Americruiser CD.

earlnash, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 23:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Y'know, Anthony, theres topical analgesics that can ease those symptoms.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 23:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Big Star
Stooges
VU

A few people noticed but their impact was stronger LONG after they were gone.

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 01:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Imagine we could have all been bitching about how lame felt are

I thought that was the point of ILM.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 03:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Disco Inferno's early work (collected for your pleasure on _In Debt_)came too early for any sort of postpunk revival cred, though it is among the best postpunk out there, period.

Their more exploratory "post-rock" stuff after _In Debt_ was probably just both too experimental and too emotionally opaque for the Britpop Era.

So, as has been stated on here before, one of the best bands of the 1990s never really got their due -- still haven't, as evidenced by the $1 copy of _DI Go Pop_ my girlfriend found a few months ago.

Clarke B., Wednesday, 19 March 2003 03:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Trash, three great albums then they disappeared? bruce blucher where have you gone?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 06:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I second Felt, although i don't hear a lot of b&s in their sound.

Do hip-hopers count? B/c it would seem that Aceyalone would fit in this group perfectly.

gery forbes (gery), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 06:59 (twenty-three years ago)

fushitsusha. borbetomagus. minuteman (though maybe some were paying attn to the latter).

Die Kreuzen
Antioch Arrow

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Stiff Little Fingers! Why this band didn't cause spontaneous combustion on a global scale is beyond me. The riffs, the vocals, the political overtones, the energy. 'Suspect Device' should be a song that all school children know and love. At least in the alternate Universe that I live in...

Davlo (Davlo), Thursday, 20 March 2003 02:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Universal Order of Armageddon and Lungfish because they brought a touch of spirituality/holiness to a scene that was sorely lacking in anything of that nature; they added a depth to their respective/local (hardcore) scenes that really inspired/elated people.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 20 March 2003 02:56 (twenty-three years ago)

three weeks pass...
i thought guy called gerald and 'black secret tech' got acknowledged all the time as the secretly-in-the-critical-know hush hush record at the end of other obvious lists...

but rarely do i see ppl talk about the why, which is prob jess' point

lots of empty lip service

zemko (bob), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:01 (twenty-three years ago)

it is a very 'losing my edge' type record

zemko (bob), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:02 (twenty-three years ago)

The Embarrassment.

mike a (mike a), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

*sighs*

Anthony Miccio hit on one of my early teenaged loves -- Urge Overkill. I really got into them, as most people who got into them, via "Sister Havana". I remember it was during this big period when Chicago rock artists were getting massive nationwide attention (e.g. UO, Liz Phair, Smashing Pumpkins). MTV News was setting it up to be the next Seattle.

But I digress. Urge Overkill were (are) a really good band, and I even liked their Neil Diamond cover, even though I prefer Barry Manilow to Neil Diamond (Neil just bugs me for some reason).

*happy sentimental sighs*

Dee the Lurker (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 11 April 2003 22:47 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe if we all clap loud enough Urge Overkill will reunite.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 11 April 2003 23:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Over the years I've met many people from all walks of life who turn out to be hardcore Ween fanatics. Not being a Ween fan myself, I never really understood it. But now I'm convinced there's a secret underground cabal that controls everything, and at the top of the one-eyed pyramid stands Dean and Gene Ween.

Nick Mirov (nick), Friday, 11 April 2003 23:59 (twenty-three years ago)

The Gordons! The first album and especially _Future Shock_ were super-seething ultra-hard indie-rock with not much interest in the "songwriterly" tradition of punk rock or the playing-to-the-kids hardcore thing... in like 1980, several years before the U.S. figured out the same basic ideas. Every time I hear "Future Shock" or "Adults and Children," I think of someone hitting a heavy bag so hard sweat comes off it.
