Marc Ribot going for broke performing John Zorn's "Book of Heads" has to be heard to be believed - balloons and rice?

Dr. Annabel Lies (Michael Kelly), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 01:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Nels Cline made a name for himself scraping his strings with egg beaters and other kitchenware, as well as firing toy rayguns at the pickups, but the guy makes amazing sounds with or without flashy tools.

and lest we forget Nigel Tufnel's finely tuned Stradivarious.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 02:14 (twenty-three years ago)

The guitar player for the Scissor Girls used a windup alarm clock as a pick once.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 02:27 (twenty-three years ago)

It is all about guitars being played with drum sticks on the first Nico album.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 02:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Bruce Russell to thread!

I have to admit that Eddie Van Halen's powerdrill was kinda cool.

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 02:39 (twenty-three years ago)

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 02:49 (twenty-three years ago)

The Dim Mak guitarist apparently played with sharpened coins for a while. I believe he gave up on that crap. Good for him!

Øystein Holm-Olsen (Øystein H-O), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 03:07 (twenty-three years ago)

The first four should have formed a supergroup. Do you like the solo stuff? I like her in a small dose at the bar but never heard the albums

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 03:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I like to use dimes! its sounds like a violin played by a 6 year old

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 03:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Didn't Brian May use coins, too?

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 03:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top uses a Mexican peso. The bassist from Mr. Big (Billy Sheehan?) used to do a bass solo w/power drill in concert, which much to my chagrin I have witnessed.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 04:07 (twenty-three years ago)

The drummer's head. There's a risk of the gtr body smashing into a zillion pieces though, or in cases of super-head-density, both of your arms coming out the sockets

dave q, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 11:35 (twenty-three years ago)

keiji haino and derek bailey to thread.

< CUTE STORY >
While on tour in Australia, the Guitarist for Tin Machine (Dave Bowies band in the late 80s) decided that he wanted to play his geetar with a marital aid. So he went to the local sex shop's "vibrator" section and experimented with the vibes. He would pick up one of the devices, turn it on and put it next to hear and listen to it. While he was doing this, the shops proprieter was cleaning up the shop, and began to vaccuum. The guitarist started to become distracted by the sound of the vaccuum and looked over in the direction of the shopkeepers vaccuum cleaner with a look of intense concentration (trying to "tune out" the vaccuum, apparently.) Suddenly the shopkeeper stops vaccuuming and shuts off the machine. The guitarist is now looking at the vaccuum intensely. The shopkeeper jumps to the wrong conclusion and barks "No! Its not FOR SALE!"< CUTE STORY >

That story gives a whole new meaning to "fuck picks", don't it?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 13:51 (twenty-three years ago)

an eggwhisk / a knife / a spring is a pick.

bob snoom, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 14:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Some friends of mine in an experi-metal band did a record where they put cat food under the strings of their guitar and had the cat claw at and eat the food through the strings, and recorded it.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 20 March 2003 03:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I've heard that Steve Albini uses razors as guitar picks in Shellac. It sounds like it too, I think. Not a cat, but still.
