Does it annoy you when people say they hate your favorite band/artist?

I know I shouldn't be annoyed, it's only their opinion, but anytime someone says, "I hate (insert band I REALLY love)" I get very ticked. I don't usually say anything, but from that point on, it's very hard for me to form a normal relationship with that person without always thinking in the back of my head that they hate my favorite band.

I completely fail to comprehend why people take someone disliking bands they like so personally. I can't imagine anything less important and UNLESS their reasons are really good ones (you know those kind of cognitive dissonance causing reasons like the guitarist for X band raped and murdered my family and he financed his demo with loot stolen from their house) it baffles me why anyone would chalk up such a contrivance up to anything more than a slight difference in taste.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 06:09 (twenty-three years ago)

i hate all the bands you love

JasonD (JasonD), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 06:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Sometimes, but it's more because of phrasing than what's meant - "I hate so-and-so", I don't sweat; "So-and-so sucks ass" (or any variation), I take mild exception to, but only for the few brief moments that it takes my melon to translate that into the former statement. Also, if someone objects (in any fashion) repeatedly, or with excessive force / volume, then I get ripshit, but only because it gets really annoying to hear someone attempt to reiterate their assertion, say, 97 times in the course of a 2-minute conversation, & / or do so loudly.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 06:45 (twenty-three years ago)

It annoys me more when people love my favourite band FOR THE WRONG REASONS!!!

Whatever they might be.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 06:45 (twenty-three years ago)

no. life's too short.

Tad (llamasfur), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 06:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Nope. Unless it's Anthony M. making fun of MBV, but then I remember he likes Good Charlotte and has therefore condemned himself. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 06:50 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't care, as long as they don't try to convince me why i should agree with them. this has happened to me more than once.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 07:02 (twenty-three years ago)

It used to, but I don't really have favourite bands anymore, but rather favourite rekkids. At nearly 24 I think I'm a bit old for getting uppity when people don't like X and I do.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 08:38 (twenty-three years ago)

i get very fidgety if i feel i have to defend something to someone i don't really know. on the other hand, if its a friend i'll tell them to f**k off.

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 08:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Depends on the person. I mean, if some musically tasteless idiot (naming no names) were to say that they thought Spacemen 3 were meaningless drivel, then I'd shrug and go "Yeah, you're right. You are not SUPPOSED to get this! I can't stand the bands that you love, I would not want a RHCP-loving idiot to GET Spacemen 3, so I feel vindicated and HAPPY that you hate my favourite band!"

But when, someone who should know better, say, Horton, says "Oh, no, I hate Spacemen 3!" It genuinely bothers me, and I will drag that person off and make them listen to them again, and explain why they are genius and generally berate tham until they get it or else end up very upset.

kate, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 09:39 (twenty-three years ago)

But I don't like RHCP??!!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 09:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Kate, just out of interest, how would you react if some bloke you liked took you to on eside and gave you the "Spacemen 3 are great" talk about, say, RHCP? In fact, make that an open question to everyone. In fact, I might start a thread about it - how do the eulogisers and hyperbole-spouters and preachers take being eulogised / hyperbole spouted / preached at?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 09:45 (twenty-three years ago)

'At nearly 24 I think I'm a bit old for getting uppity when people don't like X and I do'

Yeah? Well X always were the worst LA punk band. They suck shit, plus they're gay. What're you gonna do about it?

dave q, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 10:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Knock your fuckin' teeth out, you X hating bastard!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 11:02 (twenty-three years ago)

My buttons are still way too easily pressed but for genres not bands. Except maybe ABBA.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 11:04 (twenty-three years ago)

It annoys me a lot, particularly if they hate that band/artist exactly for the same reasons why I love it/them.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 11:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I guess that happens a lot, Geir.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 11:31 (twenty-three years ago)

It only tends to annoy me if I generally think the person has good taste otherwise.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 11:32 (twenty-three years ago)

it depends. if the person makes coherent args then its far more annoying bcz you have to re-evaluate and think of a reply and if you haven't got time to kill on that particurlar day then v annoying.

if its irrational hatred then no.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 11:46 (twenty-three years ago)

i only hate it when i know the person saying it does actually know their music and probably better than me too. so it happens on ILM a lot! but i'm forever dealing easily with local Coldplay-loving curmudgeons (i promise i will stop using this word....eventually) who say thngs like 'That Streets is a bit rubbish innee?' and have no idea or care who George Clinton, Frank Black or Alison Goldfrapp are.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 11:53 (twenty-three years ago)

doesn't bother me in the slightest. as i've said before, the only thing that REALLY annoys me in musical debate is when someone says something "isn't music" or "isn't Real Music". that's arrogant, but disliking my favourite band is just taste. i know people on here dislike "everyone's entitled to their own opinion!"-style truisms, but sometimes i just have to throw my hands up and say "everyone's entitled to their own opinion!"

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 12:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Nick, I am generally prepared to listen to a pitch for a band I don't like from a person whose taste I otherwise respect, and who is willing to show respect for ME and MY TASTE.

I mean, yeah, there are rare cases in which I've given a band a second chance based on someone's enthusiasm, and I've been converted. (I'm trying to think of an example, but I'm too distracted right now to come up with one.) And I've sat through many a pitch for, for example, Pulp - who my friends love but I don't get. But I know that I'm never going to be converted to, say, RHCP or the Grateful Dead (sorry, hstencil! though you can still try!) It really comes down to who is presenting the case, and how they present it.

kate, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 12:03 (twenty-three years ago)

The word that annoys me the most of all is the word "derivative". I usually find that the bands that are called "derivative" are the bands that I love more than any others, and the main reason why I love them is that they are "derivative".

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 12:22 (twenty-three years ago)

likewise, the term 'dated' can be a good thing rather than a criticism

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 12:24 (twenty-three years ago)

likewise, the term 'dated' can be a good thing rather than a criticism

Depends. But, sure, there are a lot of great early 80s New Romantics albums or singles that sound very dated, and are still very great. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 12:35 (twenty-three years ago)

No, only when their reasoning doesn't make any sense.
A friend told me he didn't like the White Stripes, that they sound exactly like Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Huh? If that were true, I guess I'd like Jon Spencer.
Years ago, a classmate of mine told me she hated the Clash because "they have nothing to say."

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 13:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I generally don't care very much - I have gotten a LOT of crap for various sides of my musical tastes over the years.
Nonetheless, I think the thing that annoys me the most, is when people say a band isn't worthwhile, and their reason has to do with the lyrics.

Frankly, lyrics just don't matter that much to me. There are certainly times where I'll go "ohh, what a neat li'l lyric" and that great lyrics can enhance the experience, but quite a fair deal of my favorite music, most of it, I guess, has bad or no lyrics. Or in some cases - lyrics you can't make out (Lord Worm says hello), or even gibberish (Hey there, Vander)

Øystein Holm-Olsen (Øystein H-O), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 13:53 (twenty-three years ago)

It only really bothers me if...

A) their disdain is phrased as if it's SOLID FACT
B) they attempt to explain their hate with glaring inaccuracies
C) it's obvious their hatred is not based on their music

...and even then it doesn't usually bother me much. I do seem to get more carried away with regards to hip-hop than with most other styles, but that mostly has to do with the 99.9% bullshit and inconsistant reasonings as to "why" it sucks.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

It only bothers me if they've never even seen Phish more than like 5 times. Cuz it's only after you break that threshold that it really stinks, er, sinks in.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha ha, I've seen Phish more than 5 times, and all of the best performances of their's that I've seen were those first 5.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I enjoy the hate. Especially the standard "That's not even music, it's just screaming!!" response. I don't know how many times someone has said that one over the years. And then I laugh and laugh.

And I really couldn't care much about lyrics either, but Lord Worm writes much better than that what's his name guy they have now!

original bgm, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 16:31 (twenty-three years ago)

haha yes it does annoy me when people say they hate sleater-kinney, cos they always say "oh i hate the cult of sleater-kinney" or "i think they're over-rated". but these are the usual reasons i give for hating anything so i am a big ole hypocrite.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 21:30 (twenty-three years ago)

H8x0r makes me a lot angrier than it has any right to, usually. Given my past ILM history, I probably don't need to elaborate.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 20 March 2003 01:24 (twenty-three years ago)

i want to hear hstencil's pitch for the grateful dead. (also, he does look sharp in a jerry garcia tie).

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 20 March 2003 02:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm with kate the saint ... there's no defending the dead. at all.

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 20 March 2003 02:02 (twenty-three years ago)

This doesn't happen that often, but I'm in the situation of liking a band who's current album basically sucks. So I'm having to add "but yeah, Let It Come Down stinks - the earlier albums were better" if I happen to mention liking Spiritualized.

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Thursday, 20 March 2003 02:21 (twenty-three years ago)

eleven years pass...

Is there/has there been a thread for the opposite?

For those bands where other people's hatred for a band only makes you love them more in some kind of misunderstood-rebel-loser contrarian stance?

Where "nobody truly understands this band that I loooooove, not like I do" is an intimate part of the appeal of loving them?

I think the first band I ever experienced this feeling with was the Jesus and Mary Chain, but there have been plenty of others.

Shugazi (Branwell with an N), Tuesday, 9 September 2014 16:45 (eleven years ago)

Gary Glitter. Cliff Richard. Rolf Harris.

FYI Macedonia (Tom D.), Tuesday, 9 September 2014 16:46 (eleven years ago)

But seriously, Gary Glitter a bit

FYI Macedonia (Tom D.), Tuesday, 9 September 2014 16:47 (eleven years ago)

That's not even answering the original question, let alone the question that I asked?

Shugazi (Branwell with an N), Tuesday, 9 September 2014 17:00 (eleven years ago)

i'm charmed by people's vehement hatred for bands/artists i love when they're really passionate about it and can elucidate their hatred with specifics. But when music lovers say stuff i like is "overrated" or "boring"... zzzzzzz congrats for having excellent taste and seeing through the bullshit, thanks for blowing the smoke out of my ears professor

brimstead, Tuesday, 9 September 2014 19:32 (eleven years ago)

pretty much what brimstead said.

however, i do meet the occasional person who actually believes by telling me they hate a band i like, they are winding me up.
