Artists who tread a pencil-thin line...

..between integrity and self-parody. I would argue that Tom Waits, after years of expert tightrope walking, fumbles it on "We're All Mad Here". Any other examples?

And did Yo La Tengo's knowing cover version(s) of Nuclear War end a pretty respectable run? (New stuff still sounds good, though)

I'm sorry, what were you saying about pencil-thin lines and self-parody?

Hmm, kind of makes me think of...

And of course those were the first two people I thought of anyway. Hurrah!

Ergo, pencil-thin mustaches indicate an artist who veers dangerously close to self-parody

Therefore, thick and unfussy facial hair equals integrity and reliability, sturdiness...

Eminem, perhaps?

Now I'm picturing Eminem with a pencil thin mustache. It's not a pretty sight.

Are we still talking mustaches or are we back to "the exact moment an artist plummets into self-parody"? Or is it both? In which case, and going for the obvious...

I was thinking about this just last night while listening to Coil's Music To Play In The Dark Vol 2 and that title alone sets the radar off, I think. (an ILM thread piqued my interest btw) And though I was digging it at the time, I could see how the first track could sound completely silly if I weren't in the right frame of mind. Basically, it was the constant repetition of "something... something... something... something..." being said VERY SERRIOUSLY throughout the entire track. Seemed to tread very closely to "whoa, 'something,' that's deep maaaaaaan" art rock silliness at the time.

But the rest of the album sounded tops no matter what my mood.

Ginuwine? Integrity?

I generally think of him as having integrity. from the "One in a Million" video to "Pony" etc. I don't see why he wouldn't.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)
