I actually found "Shot" to be pretty good too, aside from a few tracks. I never really saw what everyone found so bad about that. I haven't heard it in years though. Meanwhile, I really can't get into Tomahawk... It just drags and hits my snoozebutton.
I've unfortunately stood way up front at a New Bomb Turks concert once, where the vocalist decided to get nekkid too.The concert wasn't all that good, and that certainly didn't help matters!

With a lot of these late 80's/early 90's indie/pigfuck/whatever bands you got the impression the drummers were all competing to see who could play the loudest/hardest. Who could wear the mantle of the "new John Bonham". Rey Washam in Scratch Acid, McNeilly, Jim Kimball in Laughing Hyenas, all trying to destroy their kit full-tilt, all the time.
Duane Denison is an excellent guitar player. He really understands the instrument, had an impeccable tone, knew how to create the perfect heavy riff but still leave some space in the music. He's a lot like Jimmy Page, to drag out the Zep comparison.
I saw them once at a small club - more like neighborhood bar - in Chicago under a fake name. They were listed as Led Zeus Shitjar. I thought that was so perfect, I think it's a better name than The Jesus Lizard. When I saw the listing in the paper it gave me pause, I knew it had to be an anagram for them. Apparantly lots of other people did as well, because the show was insane; tons of folk jammed into this tiny space. Some idiot started crowd surfing about 20 minutes into it and reached up and punched out a ceiling tile (yes this place looked like a suburban basement). That was it, the owner pulled the plug on them.
I jumped off with Down; never heard the later records. Just wasn't feeling it anymore. But yeah they totally ruled back in the day.

Yow is quite unique vocalist, to say the least.
I've said it before on another thread, but Duane Denison is very underrated as a guitarist. He has such a developed technique and uses it with such great effeciency. The guy flat out knows his chords.
I don't know about Zep as that is bedrock with me, but I like the Jesus Lizard quite a bit more than The Birthday Party.

Apparently, David was crowd-surfing during the second encore on Friday night and was dropped by the crowd, falling a good 7 feet hard to the floor. He got up and back and stage and attempted to finish but was visibly in pain and the show was ended. I guess enough people had left by the second encore to leave the crowd thinned out enough for this to happen -- a shame (also, what lame-os)
I didn't go Friday but went Saturday. He was singing from a stool for a lot of the show, but did get to prowl around a bit and even dove from the stage once or twice -- but definitely NOT the usual manic Lizard show. Still, it was bizarre and worth it just for the sight of Yow perched on that stool... Plus the band is still totally amazing. Just could not believe how awesome Mac's drum solo was at the end of the set

Wow got to echo this (also, what lame-os), for shame etc
Every time I see this thread bumped makes me think how great that show was last year - I was myself too lame to be into the Jesus Lizard when they were actually around, can't remember why, I think the name having Jesus in it when JAMC already did that turned me off them, whatever, stupidity. Or maybe it was Jesus Jones' fault, everything else is.

The Baltimore crowd was nuts for 'em too, kids flying everywhere, cheering "like they're seeing Bruce Springsteen", plenty of crowd surfing.
Part of the irony here is that Bruce was playing Baltimore the same night, to a sold-out arena. It seemed like Yow was bemused/amused at the corollary. And yes, the place was packed and people were going nuts. Shame to hear that the D.C. show was underattended.
The guy who played in between them and openers Double Dagger, can't remember his name, was on some kind of cosmic drone trip. Guitar, drumset, and sampler, with long vibrating vocall-less compositions. Perhaps a fuck you to the fans who came expecting all aggro action?

It sounds pretty good and I kinda get the reference on the Offspring on that guitar lick, but it has a bit more devils note tritones than their riff.

They haven't made any albums since the 90s, the new single doesn't make much of an impression but I'd be curious to hear the full-length

I saw them at Riot Fest (Chicago) in 2018 which I think was the last time they did it, and for whatever reason, Yow got really annoyed at everyone and told the crowd it would be the last time they'd ever do a festival, period. I see he's doing the Hopscotch Festival in Raleigh, NC this fall so I guess he was just speaking in the moment. (Or he changed his mind.)
― birdistheword, Thursday, 6 June 2024 04:07 (two years ago)
They’re also playing two other festivals in September so I’m guessing $$$$ helped him get over the annoyance.
― Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 6 June 2024 04:18 (two years ago)
I'll never forget seeing them do a record release gig at CBGB in the mid 90s. At one point Yow started flinging copies of the vinyl record into the crowd and one zipped past me, nicking the side of my neck. Dangerous cat that Yow.
― completely suited to the horny decadence (Capitaine Jay Vee), Thursday, 6 June 2024 08:11 (two years ago)
I once saw them on a double bill with Boss Hog, Christina was dressed in a very tight and very short dress, showing her see-through red underwear, and cowboy boots. the Jesus Lizard came up afterwards, and David was wearing christina's outfit, with everything hanging out. At one point he pointed at me and said "stop looking at my balls, you faggot!" excellent show, complete adrenaline rush

They’re an interesting band in that while I managed to see them twice in the 1990s - absolutely killed it both times - Liar is the only record of theirs that clicked for me. Otherwise it was a track here, a track there - “Mailman” on Shot is a good example.
― Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 6 June 2024 11:57 (two years ago)
Which is to say that while I'm happy for them that they’re doing a new album/tour, I’m keeping my expectations measured.
― Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 6 June 2024 11:58 (two years ago)
I listened to the song again last night and on second time through I thought it sounded pretty good, I don't have great expectations for the record but I would love to see them again, maybe 2025 they will schedule some Midwest US dates but they also avoided Mpls on their last reunion run (despite rumors that a First Ave date was more or less confirmed)
― chr1sb3singer, Thursday, 6 June 2024 13:03 (two years ago)
Saw them twice during the last reunion run. No reason to believe this time will be any less good, having seen the Yow/Flipper show in the meantime to confirm he's still got that unhinged tendency.

― Mike Dixn, Thursday, 10 October 2024 21:55 (one year ago)
I listened to Rack again this morning, it is pretty great! I wish like, anyone else in the world had recorded it cuz the songs are pretty great but the sound of the album is a little gray/murk-y/home demo-y but it's also a million times better than it has any right to be, Yow's singing (yes) is excellent, a real highlight
I have a very slim opportunity to see them this yr but just couldn't make it work and am really regretting it.
