Can't find a thread on Money Mark...I would say Mark's Keyboard Repair is a great forgotten album of the 90s, Push the Button has some great tracks, but was somehow not as special & Change is Coming, while accomplished, seemed a little pointless.

Did he become too hip for his own good? Did the end of MoWax spell the end of MM? What does ILM think?

i liked that song "hand in your head". maybe i should get an album sometime, although it will probably take me several months to get all the albums i have lined up for purchase, ha!

i have the first two but never listen to them. I kind of bought push the button because of the little heresthetrackwheelonthecardboardcover. beore that i kind of bought repair shop because it was on mo wax. i'm kind of crap, aren't i? so, yeah...should i sell them?

MKR is a fantastic record & one I love dearly, but I feel it convinced a whole lot of late 90s artists that they could release scrappy albums with a few good songs padded out with halfbaked, unfinished instrumentals (see Badly Drawn Boy, Cornershop, David Holmes etc)

Mark's Keyboard Repair has been on regular rotation since it came out.

Mark's Keyboard Repair = pure genius. One of the most-well-received-at-parties CDs I've ever encountered.

Push the Button = very good, although many people I know didn't like the mix/production, they said it sounded to Friends-soundtracky. This one is totally summertimey. Not to mention Mark's voice sounds really good on this.

Change is Coming = great also, very funky and downright gorgeous in places...although I miss Mark's voice on this one, especially with the noticeable dramatic improvement between MKR and P the B, I figured on this album his voice would be primo.

really dig mkr. i think i picked it up after i found out that he played on the beasties "in sound from way out." don't have his recent stuff though. mkr will remain a good old gem.

"we've got sales....special sales"

That last track is the genius of MKR...between the lo-fi sound and the "come on down to Mark's keyboard repair" outro, the whole thing really does come off as the longest, funkiest commercial ever.

Yeah, I always forget that I own MKR. But I do really like his song "Use Your Head," from the Red Hot + Rio comp.

Nickalicious -- between this and Soul Coughing and Butter 08, I have a feeling we were listening to the same kinda stuff circa 1997.

Totally!

last song on mkr is a classic for sure. i am tempted to type out all the lyrics right here, but i won't.

has his totally disappeared from sight?

saw him live a couple of times 'round MKR release. one time at spaceland he was so disorganized half the audience left while he puttered amiably around between songs.

not scintillating live but if you had the opportunity to hang out in his studio and smoke pot while he messed around on the keyboard etc you'd have a good time.

not that i've done that, i'm just speculating.

MKR - good, little scrappy. PTB - better, solely due to pop songs and instrumental silliness. Mark On The Mic - half-baked live album, mainly livened up by 2 good spots from Kid Koala. 'Cry' Dust Brothers Remix - ONE OF THE BEST SONGS OF THE LAST 10 YEARS.

Overall, C.

five years pass...

I don't think I'll ever get tired of Mark's Keyboard Repair - a real great 90s album. I've really been into the idea of this kind of dusty, waxy, woodshop-type music and seeking out things that sound like it. MMKR is the starting point.

Other things that remidn me of MKR: Harco Pront, Tonetta 777, early dEUS etc.

Dug out Push The Button today for the first time in ages. It's a fun listen, but what Costello (or Nick Lowe?) song did he pilfer for the intro to this:
