Anaemic cabaret-blues for suckers or "the Hebrew BB King"????

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 20 March 2003 11:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Pretty mediocre, all told. Search the legend, destroy the music.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 20 March 2003 11:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Too true, JBR - but the concept is indeed great. I aim to be the semitic Elmore James by the time I'm sixty.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 20 March 2003 11:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Search: the Tom Waits/Rickie Lee Jones association, all that LA boozey fleabag Tropicana Motel '70s mythos.

Destroy: LA in general.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 20 March 2003 12:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Is the Rickie Lee Jones album with "Chuck E's In Love" any good? It's been on my list for some time.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 20 March 2003 12:06 (twenty-three years ago)

It is. Haven't played it in years, though.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 20 March 2003 12:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I must be a sucker, as I picked up 'Old Souls & Wolf Tickets' and it sounds pretty good to me. Whatever its other qualities, it's a lot of fun.

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 20 March 2003 12:14 (twenty-three years ago)

It sounds less good the more you hear it. or to paraphrase Mark Twain (who was no Chuck E. fan, I tell you what): it sounds better than it is.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 20 March 2003 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

have you been to LA, Jody Beth?

dan (dan), Thursday, 20 March 2003 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

yes.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 21 March 2003 00:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Fite fite fite!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 21 March 2003 10:23 (twenty-three years ago)

What little I've heard by him was good. It Rains On Me is good.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 23 March 2003 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Destroy: Chuck E and Rickie Lee
Search: the Tropicana, Tom Waits, LA in general.

Arthur (Arthur), Sunday, 23 March 2003 17:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Waitaminute; that first Rickie Lee album is great.

Sean (Sean), Sunday, 23 March 2003 18:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, Waits is a different league entirely.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 23 March 2003 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I had another listen over the weekend, and it still sounds good. I must still be a sucker.

I guess it depends what your expectations are. I had none (picked it up for free) and was pleasantly surprised. If you're expecting 'Blue Valentine' or 'Swordfishtrombones' you'll be disappointed.

He sounds like he'd be a lot of fun live.

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 24 March 2003 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

thirteen years pass...
