James Brown's current touring band suck, but it doesn't bother me.

All due credit to the Amateurist/Jess Hill back-and-forth on the Self Portrait thread.

I mean, sometimes a mediocre session band can really be useful for achieving a special quality when there's a "genius" involved... phoned-in, on-the-fly cheapness as metaphor for the dilettante's all-encompassing pop idea (see Klaus Nomi's "Simple Man").

Is this like the musical equivalent of when Hitchcock used deliberately fake sets and back-projections on Rebecca to accentuate the artificiality of her situation?

It's like a flirtation with an abstract, mutant notion of a pop-life culture that the artist may be something of an outsider to -- so perhaps the success of that fusion of great/terrible is unintentional, when the intention might be for it to be ohsoterribly "wonderful" (in the condescending Warholian way).

or just talk about "great/charismatic vocal performances over shit instrumentation" in general...

the first thing(s) that sprung to mind were those live 70s lou reed performances on rock'n'roll animal - especially the vaudeville take on "heroin" wherein he just goes on and on and ON (even though we can't see him miming shooting up) - where he's basically hectoring like a fat, overpleased catskillz cat over tinkly piano schmaltz and really purple "feedback" obviously designed to somehow link this sideshow carnie routine to his "edgy" days in the velvets while simultaneously making hilarious comment on them.

edith massey's "punk" cover of "big girls don't cry"

(vocals fall more under a euphemistic "charismatic" than "great")

Arguably Langely Schools Music Project, though the people who argue this generally don't like LSMP

I think maybe you have to consider the instrumentation to be on the charismatic side of shit. In which case, the Moldy Peaches.

I never got this sense from Rebecca. Marnie, definately.
