So who wins THIS battle of the bands?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 20 March 2003 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

like i said in the other thread: scientists.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 20 March 2003 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 20 March 2003 17:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 20 March 2003 17:30 (twenty-three years ago)

the scientists have got a track on the newly released "Tales Of The Australian Underground" 2cd comp : http://www.feelpresents.com/label/768/releases/tales1/index.html

phil turnbull (philT), Thursday, 20 March 2003 20:16 (twenty-three years ago)

New Christ and New Race deserve their own thread, but don't get carried away.

Birthday Party vs. AC/DC? Jesus....what a matchup.

Apples & Oranges, I'm afraid. Love'em both, but they don't have a pebble of common ground between them (apart from nationality).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 20 March 2003 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

SLUGFUCKERS!

Bah. I don't care if they're similar or not.
The Battle of bands is Birthday Party, the Scientists and AC/DC.
Thats what I put on the Thunderdome Marquee, and thats whos playing on the bill tonite.
Don't question it. Just accept it.

Just like we both said in another thread....
Alex in NYC: This is like comparing Lawnmowers and Grapefruit.
Custos: Lawnmowers Rock and Grapefruit Suck.

Hard-Ons vs I Spit on Your Gravy

dave q, Thursday, 20 March 2003 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Alright. Having just seen them, I'll go with the ever-dependable AC/DC (though my heart bleeds always for the Birthday Party). The Scientists can go piss up a rope for all I care.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:22 (twenty-three years ago)

The Scientists are rinky dink indie! AC/DC whilst classic produced alot of shit and are not on the 'oldie but goodie' endless tour circuit. I think. Or maybe it just feels like it. The Birthday Party were pure psychosis and broke up at the right time. Assuring them cool status for a life time!

S Samson, Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:43 (twenty-three years ago)

my drummer is mates with Kim Salmon, but Phill Calvert has sat on my couch. The tiebraker is Rowland S Howard => Birthday Party wins.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

The only time i saw the Birthday Party Nick Cave played the whole gig sitting on a chair. The only time i saw the Scientists there were 6 people in the crowd and one guy danced. The only time I saw AC/CD Angus sweated over my sister.
AC/DC therefore wins.

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 20 March 2003 23:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow. You saw the Birthday Party live? Me jealous.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 March 2003 02:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex, I dragged a conservatively minded cousin of mine to see the Birthday Party and the Fall play whilst he was visiting London from South Africa. It's now twenty years later and he still talks about that inner circle of hell that I sent him to.

Amarga (Amarga), Friday, 21 March 2003 02:53 (twenty-three years ago)

He has no idea, obviously, of the rare honor he received.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 March 2003 03:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I remember a friend of mine was right up under Nicks nose, grabbing him, hitting him, desparately wanting to be beaten up by him.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 21 March 2003 03:28 (twenty-three years ago)

i choose the scientists cos they were like the birthday party only better cos they didn't have nick cave, who's singing sort of annoys me. though this is difficult because the birthday party had a killer guitarist. i like both of those bands mostly for their rhythm sections anyway. ac/dc i enjoy, but they hardly figure in the equation, IMO.

di smith (lucylurex), Friday, 21 March 2003 04:00 (twenty-three years ago)

RSH's guitar playing is sex on a stick

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 21 March 2003 04:02 (twenty-three years ago)

yes indeeedy.

di smith (lucylurex), Friday, 21 March 2003 04:02 (twenty-three years ago)

cripes, you want this as a serious contest? the birthday party were always smarty-pants melbourne dickheads. the scientists were always boring as hell. ac/dc always, ummmm, rocked or something.

phil turnbull (philT), Friday, 21 March 2003 07:42 (twenty-three years ago)

the birthday party were always smarty-pants melbourne dickheads. the scientists were always boring as hell.

good to see that local scenes never change.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 21 March 2003 09:45 (twenty-three years ago)

all terrific bands in their prime but the scientists get my vote for consistently brilliant records, a number of which have been reissued over the last year. this is a pretty tough TS actually. just as well it's not 'mutiny in heaven' vs 'human jukebox' vs 'jailbreak'. i don't think i could pick a winner out of that lot.

angelo (angelo), Friday, 21 March 2003 11:18 (twenty-three years ago)

the Avalanches.

Ess Kay (esskay), Friday, 21 March 2003 11:56 (twenty-three years ago)

no wait . . . Spiderbait.

(uh haven't heard the BP, haven't heard of the Scientists, & "thunderstruck" was the token rokk3n song chosen by everyone on m2's "guess who's coming to dj" (the other staple was, luckily, "gin'n'juice") - uh . . .)

Ess Kay (esskay), Friday, 21 March 2003 11:58 (twenty-three years ago)

whirlyworld, actually.

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 23 March 2003 09:56 (twenty-three years ago)

four years pass...

I wanted to know people's take on the Scientists, this is the only thread I found........

So, an aussie battle of the bands containing AC/DC and no one brings up Rose Tattoo...?

Birthday Party vs. AC/DC is tough to decide, I love em both for very different reasons. Scientists though... they always felt like....diet Cramps.

birthday party were always smarty-pants melbourne dickheads
Yeah, so...?

RabiesAngentleman, Friday, 22 February 2008 13:10 (eighteen years ago)

Scientists are everything that the Cramps could never have been - genuinely dangerous, off the wall psychabilly. Not quite as classic as Birthday Party but close.

Mr. Odd, Saturday, 23 February 2008 02:49 (eighteen years ago)

The Saints called and said I'M FUCKING STRANDED YOU IDIOTS

I think I like Rose Tattoo MORE than AC/DC. They to me are a band that copies another band and does it BETTER than the originals did.

The Scientists also did some of the best power pop ever on their early stuff!

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 23 February 2008 02:55 (eighteen years ago)

yeah first two scientists 45s are tremendous

i've been listening to blood red river a lot lately, sometimes the swampy stuff can be a bit much to cope with but sometimes it really hits the spot

been getting right into the first three beasts of bourbon albums of late. kim salmon has written so many amazing songs in his time..

electricsound, Saturday, 23 February 2008 03:09 (eighteen years ago)

I just downloaded a Beasts Of Bourbon album off a blog, dunno when I'll get around to it but I might bump it up the queue

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 23 February 2008 03:11 (eighteen years ago)

It's really close, but I think the Scientists win because the B'Day Party had no Human Jukebox.

The first Beasts is exceptionally good. After that, less so.
