Do you ever get the feeling that nothing is as good as it's supposed to be?

Not that nothing is good, per se, but that even stuff that's good is overrated?

overratedness is underrated

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 20 March 2003 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 March 2003 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I always feel like that. I think there's medication for it, but I'm not going to take any. I think the fact that we rate things is the great tragedy of humankind. Yeah, yeah, it's also what makes us human, but being human's, I don't know...overrated.

Calling things overrated is overrated.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:37 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, but so is declaring something underrated.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:00 (twenty-three years ago)

now...declaring something Underroos(TM) is completely hip and clever.

Contrary to Jan's assertions, Marcia Brady was in fact rated just about right.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 21 March 2003 06:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I never feel that way.

Rather I always feel that way about new things the critical hive-mind gloms onto (see The Streets), because of course they have to create hype to keep themselves in work. They have to say something about something.

But a very large percentage of older recordings that you often read about do indeed tend to turn out to pretty darn good when you get to hear them.

I mean I just think Simon Reynolds has created this mindset where it is so important to keep looking feverishly for the new, what with his obsessive chronicling of every happening thing, his neologisms, etc.

I love his writing, he's very intelligent, etc. But I'm wary of his "influence".

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 21 March 2003 06:59 (twenty-three years ago)

but Simon came from a milieu (the UK music press) where that's long been the norm. he just happens to still be doing it, and to be in a higher position of influence than most UK press journos get

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 21 March 2003 07:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Eddy is more my hero. You get the sense he just gets all this stuff in the mail, listens to it, sifts through, finds the interesting parts and writes about it.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 21 March 2003 07:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Simon is a "clubber".

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 21 March 2003 07:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Overything is everrated.
