One of the classic albums of the 80s towards the same band becoming a pathetic shadow of what they used to be only three years on. Hardly a competition at all.

"Alphabet City" did have its moments though.

I don't think that you can have heard How to Be a Zillioinaire.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Thursday, 20 March 2003 23:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think they became a shadow of themselves as much as they became a cartoon of themselves. At the time I thought it was tacky, but that was probably part of the point. Anyway, I vote for the debut.

Zillionaire could make it, and frankly should make it, on dizzying confidence alone. There's a manic playfulness there that can't be denied, but it's not really backed up properly... whereas every track on Lexicon is as golden as the next. So Lexicon.

That said - Kiss! My! Snatch!

How about "Fifteen Story Halo"! So over the top. I love that song. Andrew WK should cover it.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 21 March 2003 00:27 (twenty-three years ago)

andrew wk really needs to get trevor horn to produce his next record

with a cameo by taTu

Gatinha is on the money (you were addressing Geir weren't you)

Dancing to "Be Near Me" at the City Nightclub in Portland when the song was new made for a new peak experience every week - "Zillionaire" is a much cannier album I think, and the filler on it is at least good to dance to

but again it's a "would you like a delicious chocolate bar or a delicious slice of pie" sort of question I guess

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 21 March 2003 01:07 (twenty-three years ago)

ahem

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 21 March 2003 02:04 (twenty-three years ago)

yes well I never said I don't repeat myself occasionally/constantly

As somebody said, Zillionaire is brimming with 'dizzying confidence', despite the fact that it's objectively kind of crap - it's one of those albums I could never persuade anyone else to like, just like I'd never admit to ocasionally liking the Blow Monkeys. Or not knowing how to spell occassionally. They went one to make 'The Night Yuo Murdered Love', which was fabulous, and I remember a number of comebacks after that, 'One Better Day' (very Ten City) and then somthing about a skyscraper? Actually, Alphabet City was made in Minneapolis with Prince's 'team', shortly after the Human League had been making 'Crash' with Janet Jackson's 'crew'. It was all just a high falutin continuation of Sheffield's turf wars, you know...

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Friday, 21 March 2003 02:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh hell, I rebuy every new wave record I tossed out 15 years ago; guess I need Zillionaire again maybe.

Sean (Sean), Friday, 21 March 2003 02:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm with Jess...your answer depends on your feelings for Trevor Horn as a producer. Gotta be "Lexicon"...but so close.

Erick H (Erick H), Friday, 21 March 2003 02:35 (twenty-three years ago)

A thread for you, o senhor gatinha!

Lexicon is one of my all-time favourites, so this is no contest for me.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 23 March 2003 14:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I love them both, it's a hard choice.
But it has to be Lexicon of Love.
The presence of the bald dwarf swayed my vote against Zillionaire.....

russ t, Monday, 24 March 2003 13:10 (twenty-three years ago)

More bands should have bald dwarves.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 March 2003 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

It couldn't catch on.
Just look at the Communards.....
