both unappreciated and mercilessly mocked during their salad days. both alleged by some to be shameless rip-off artists (sabbath alleged to have ripped off cream and blue cheer; numan, bowie and kraftwerk). both "re-wrote" the rules of pop music and weren't really appreciate till decades after they put out their best stuff. both arguably the best showmen of their time. both had some embarrassing/entertaining extra-musical escapades (ozzy pissing on the alamo, numan getting arrested in india for flying his airplane where he shouldn't have).

neither has put out anything terribly essential in decades. and at least gazza has spared the world his "home videos."

Numan still retains his marbles, so he wins, but Ozzy remains more lovable.

Gaz has had a bit of a recovery I think. Also, he wrote all his own stuff, but Oz didn't even write the lyrics let alone the music. But they are loveable in the same way, it's true.

Nevertheless, I hold by the Gary Numan-Rob Halford connection more than this one.

Couldn't give a shit about Ozzy's solo stuff, so Numan wins. However, if it was Ozzy-era Black Sabbath vs. Numan I may have to go the other way...

If Numan had dropped LSD every day for 18 months he coulda been a contender.

But really, Numan vs Sabbath? Come on...

Numan > Ozzy OR Sabbath OR Ozzy + Sabbath

Atnevon (Atnevon), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Huge call! I am loath to choose. Obv, Numan 1978-1982 and 1996-present everything but Ozzy-plus-Sabb's first 4 albums.

Sorry that came out garbled. Let me put it in fanboy algebra:

Numan 1978-82 and 1996-present > Ozzy OR Sabbath OR Ozzy + Sabbath after first four albums.

Although I still treasure the "Cars" 45 I bought at age 12, no contest: Ozzy! Black Sabbath is eternal, and his first few solo albums weren't bad at all. But I'd probably take Numan over R.J.Dio if I was forced to choose.

And this is irrelevant, but I just gotta say that His Ozzness' 1982 Speak Of The Devil live LP is WAY better than Sabbath's own concurrent live thing with which it duplicated half the tracks.

The thing is, Gaz didn't sell his soul to the devil did he? Therefore, it might be argued that he failed to get the best tunes.

What is that coming out of Ozzy's mouth on the cover of Speak of the Devil? Grape preserves?
