Who's the finest Prince impersonator? (As in, "who would you be most likely to listen to, while they impersonated Prince?")

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 21 March 2003 10:04 (twenty-three years ago)

d'angelo, could "how does it feel" be any more Prince

james (james), Friday, 21 March 2003 10:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Romanthony. Could someone give this man an adequate budget to record the masterpiece he has in him?

JoB (JoB), Friday, 21 March 2003 11:05 (twenty-three years ago)

For the record I like them all. I'm a sucker for a Prince sound-a-like.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 21 March 2003 11:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn, I thought this was a thread about a bootleg.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Friday, 21 March 2003 11:54 (twenty-three years ago)

You forgot Ani D.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 21 March 2003 15:10 (twenty-three years ago)

No, she falls under "etc".

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 21 March 2003 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

then I guess etc. wins then, yes?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 21 March 2003 15:27 (twenty-three years ago)

By default. Numbers sanctify, and "etc" is a broad church.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 21 March 2003 15:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm gonna say Ani D (er, "etc") then, since she's singular among the Prince imitators for having performed with both-members-of-his-bands (incl. Larry Graham and Maceo Parker) as well as performing with the little man himself. I don't recall any of these others making it through that particular paisley gate.

Can this really be the only thread that mentions D'Angelo? What happened to D'Angelo?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember reading something a long time ago that said he just wanted to get fat, grow a beard and play guitar, which I found wholly commendable.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

here's a really great interview w/Questlove from the roots that talks a lot about d'angelo

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I never thought he was all that

pete s, Wednesday, 25 February 2004 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

That interview was fascinating. Damn, one of my great regrets is not seeing that Voodoo tour.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The Voodoo tour was INCREDIBLE!! I don't think I've ever seen a band with that balance of creativity and funk.

I'm reading this interview, and I'm stunned!

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I love Beck's and Outkast's reinterpretations but a few songs aside, I still really don't like Prince. I caught some of Purple Rain on TV a little while back. It was weird: while I was really impressed by his skills I also felt this visceral revulsion I can't even explain.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 28 February 2004 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you hate fun? cravats?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 28 February 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 29 February 2004 08:47 (twenty-two years ago)

lake winnetonka?

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 29 February 2004 09:01 (twenty-two years ago)

As it happens I do hate puffy shirts and pretty much everything else about Prince's look, which might have something to do with it. 80s production is probably also part of it, although I love the Prime Time tracks on Ornette's In All Languages, which use very similar sounds. I dunno, something about the whole persona rubs me the wrong way? I didn't like him as a kid, I guess, which sort of carries over. I still think "When Doves Cry" is a masterpiece though.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Minnetonka

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 1 March 2004 06:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Basement Jaxx obv!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 1 March 2004 06:02 (twenty-two years ago)

D'Angelo really impressed me with "She's Always in my Hair" ..that was a cover only a true fan could pull off. And the Voodoo Tour may have done Prince's stage show better than Prince was doing it at that time..

But when it comes to Prince impersonation, no one will ever be able to touch Ready for the World.

Jay Smooth (jsmooth995), Monday, 1 March 2004 07:14 (twenty-two years ago)

nickalicious: D'angelo has also performed with Prince actually (at an aftershow at Tramps here in NY, is one time I know off the top). He's also managed by Prince's (and james brown's) old manager Alan Leeds..

And Wendy Melvoin recently helped to reunite D with ?uestlove. (pardon the linking to my own site)

Jay Smooth (jsmooth995), Monday, 1 March 2004 07:23 (twenty-two years ago)

that shit made NO sense

JaXoN (JasonD), Monday, 1 March 2004 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i imagine a bilal vs d'angelo live show with the legendary ROOTS backing up.

thoza qwanyashe, Thursday, 13 May 2004 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

dangelo doesnt make music like prince at all. the only part of dangelo that could maybe sound like prince is his falsetto. ive never totally got the dangelo vs prince thing. prince doesnt make soul music. if dangelo shut up about how much he wants to oil princes balls, then we probably wouldnt be having this discussion.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Thursday, 13 May 2004 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

"So Dr. Dre would've just been a Prince clone."

Thesplooge has some odd issues.

Been listening to Brown Sugar for the first time this evening and I proclaim it of the good. If the Prince template has to be specific, is it a variant of "4ever in My Life" and "Adore" or am I missing the more patently obvious connections?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 January 2005 04:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Couldn't possibly say.

However it must be pointed out that of all the choices this thread presents as an alternative to prince, D'Angelo is the only one suitable for playing during an encounter of a carnal nature.

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 28 January 2005 04:18 (twenty-one years ago)

JC Chasez!

new bilal album, airtight's revenge, is very fab. did his shelved 2nd album ever get a release?

are you some kinda rap version of marc loi (stevie), Thursday, 12 August 2010 16:28 (fifteen years ago)

I am seriously cut off from the radio and TV these days. Is "Free" getting any airplay? It seems like the type of song people like me would like, so some crossover potential, no? I'll take it over that Cee-Lo song.

_Rudipherous_, Monday, 23 August 2010 19:22 (fifteen years ago)

new bilal album is good - hes such an amazing singer. kinda wish he had a co-writer on board though.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 07:27 (fifteen years ago)

^^^^^ Though the songwriting is pretty good I think. Or good for the genre. These leftfield R&B types so often seem to be above songwriting.

Tim F, Tuesday, 5 October 2010 12:22 (fifteen years ago)

theres nothing as direct as fast lane or sally but yeah, the songs are strong enough, they just take a while to make themselves known. anyone else think the sleeve is a reference to bdp's by all means necessary? (not a great one either, but a ref nonetheless)

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 16:18 (fifteen years ago)

Clearly on the evidence of "Yamaha" and "Fast Car" alone, The-Dream is the best Prince impersonator working today.

I'm gonna mention ilxor in everyone of my posts until I get dn'd (ilxor), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 18:31 (fifteen years ago)
