Music you've got into through ILM

I don't think I've got into that much music through ILM. By osmosis/attrition I have absorbed some of that pro-pop shite, but not much else. Apart from Fairuz, of course, whom I wuv thanks to Rockist Scientist mentioning her when I posted here about Lebanon by mistake (I meant to post on ILE, duh).

how about you?

I hope for Graham's sake that Greenspun had protected his buffers.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 21 March 2003 22:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Wrong thread, sorry.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 21 March 2003 22:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Soviet. Lotsa that type of thing, actually.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 21 March 2003 22:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I bought Michael Mayer Immer a few weeks back because everyone kept mentioning it, and it really is something. I'm addicted to it. A hearty thank you to many ILMers for turning me on.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 21 March 2003 22:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Can't think of a specific artist (maybe the Cocteau Twins?), but I've definitely become more friendly again to 4AD-type Ned-rock. If not the Infamous Billy C, and surprisingly not Echo's Bunnyboyz. The anglophilia (and actual English people) present on ILX has definitely made me pay closer atttention to the stuff.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 21 March 2003 22:32 (twenty-three years ago)

wow nickalicious i agree with you. neutral milk hotel fuckin rules. i've been in love w/ them for a while, even before i found ILM.

The Great Depression

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 22 March 2003 00:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I fully owe ILM a huge debt of gratitude for LCD soundsystem.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Saturday, 22 March 2003 01:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I dunno about ILM but AMA got me into Elephant 6 stuff, back when it was current. I do suppose ILM taught me to take a closer look at Timbaland, though I always passively liked his stuff.

Bobby D Gray (bedhead), Saturday, 22 March 2003 02:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex from NYC told me bout Wynonnie Harris.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Saturday, 22 March 2003 02:39 (twenty-three years ago)

yes nick you should check out olivia tremor control if you are into neo-psychedelic experimental pop stuff and bands like apples in stereo are nice and poppy and groovy.

JP Albin (John Paul Albin), Saturday, 22 March 2003 04:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Boards of Canada, though I must admit that I have almost got out of them again in the meantime.

And Autechre though I haven't really gotten into them yet but I am on my way.

I'd never have bought that Calla album without having seen it mentioned here.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Saturday, 22 March 2003 09:01 (twenty-three years ago)

found out about the Streets here, a major, major thing

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 22 March 2003 10:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Killing Joke (Alex in NYC + raiding my dad's record collection)

Your dad likes the Joke? Lordy, I feel old.

Alex from NYC told me bout Wynonnie Harris.

And he rocks righteously, right?

Through ILM, I've become more tolerant towards certain things I'd have previously sworn off thoughtlessly.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 22 March 2003 10:53 (twenty-three years ago)

(Wynonie Harris is godlike)

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 22 March 2003 11:00 (twenty-three years ago)

first heard about RJD2 thru ILM...

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 22 March 2003 11:27 (twenty-three years ago)

and i would probably still not heard Archigram if it hadnt been for Ronan

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 22 March 2003 11:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Through ILM, I've become more tolerant towards certain things I'd have previously sworn off thoughtlessly.

I think that goes for pretty much all of us (hmmm, what about the folks who already loved Chartpop when they started posting, though? Has ILM made them more tolerant towards Indie or Classic Rock?)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 22 March 2003 12:13 (twenty-three years ago)

When I got here I was mostly pro-pop, pro-classic rock, pro-metal, pro-punk (etc), and generally indie-positive if not completely devoted to it. I even stuck up for it a few times.

Now I'm even more pro-pop, pro-classic rock, pro-metal, pro-punk (etc), and... re indie, I'm just really fed up with all the cultism and conservatism and cocoonism (I have this problem with punks too, but at least some of the cooler punks I know acknowledge that there are OTHER TYPES OF MUSIC OUT THERE THAN JUST THE THREE OR FOUR BANDS THAT GOT THEM LAID IN COLLEGE).

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 22 March 2003 12:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I now own tons of hip-hop and funk thanks to G Hongro

dave q, Saturday, 22 March 2003 12:32 (twenty-three years ago)

no doubt (...no, not the band, tho, 'no doubt' as in 'indubitably') the music i literally wuoldnae have heard without ILMers is the stuff on the "Do Not Listen if you hate us" compilation (some of which i quite like ...no doubt!)

otherwise, well, one regularly picks up ver voib here regarding various things, but it hasn't happened *too* often that a buzz in some part of the ILM hive has actually made me rush out into the virtual or real world because i've felt like 'must-get-that-t'ing-for-m'self-pronto!'... which may change, of course, i haven't been here that long

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 22 March 2003 12:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Taco the Wonder Dog. MC Hawking. Sleeper.

Neurosis! Boltthrower! and I thank you again

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Saturday, 22 March 2003 13:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Junior Senior, Electic Six/Wildbunch, most new hip hop stuff. And I finally got around to buying Reign in Blood. It's made me more sympathetic to the Clash and indie, they're always getting picked on here. It's made me more sick of punk rock than ever.

Arthur (Arthur), Saturday, 22 March 2003 17:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Second on Killing Joke. Alex was tyrannical in his constant reminders. I had to.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 22 March 2003 17:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't been here long enough yet to pick up anything particularly through ILM, but reading an M Matos piece elsewhere several years ago led me to Fela...

mookieproof (mookieproof), Saturday, 22 March 2003 18:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think I've gotten into anything real big time so far from ILM. (I have bought some CDs partly because of things said about them here, however.) I think it is directing me toward being more eclectic once again, but that's partly because the initial phase of discovering Arabic music and salsa is pretty much over. I have things roughly mapped out, even if there's a lot in these categories that I haven't heard. I'm getting less interested in trying to make myself keep exploring areas of Latin music that don't grab me for the most part (e.g., Latin jazz, a lot of Cuban stuff); and getting more interested in getting around to buying more Fred Frith, say, or taking a chance on some Boredoms stuff (which I already know I kind of like anyway). It doesn't all have to fit together.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 22 March 2003 18:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I've become more aware, tolerant and appreciative of a lot of Hip Hop than I was before....which is quite a leap for me.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 22 March 2003 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

ILM has got me thinking that pop isn't an absolute piece of shit bcz the ppl who listen to it are so damn nice and they can talk abt it and make it something that its worth yr time.

having said that I haven't bought any pop/chart type stuff but I have 'got' to the attraction that ppl feel towards this.

but I have bought plenty of CDs as a result of threads (can't remember which now tho').

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 22 March 2003 21:41 (twenty-three years ago)

loads of stuff-ilm and the associated blogs and so forth are my main reference for finding out about music

robin (robin), Saturday, 22 March 2003 21:43 (twenty-three years ago)

The Streets - would probably not have tried getting a copy if it wasn't for all the discussion here

H (Heruy), Saturday, 22 March 2003 21:50 (twenty-three years ago)

It's not a brand new discovery, but I'd completely forgotten about the existence of Stereolab until the other day, which has filled my life with melody, wisdom and joy.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Sunday, 23 March 2003 00:54 (twenty-three years ago)

having said that I haven't bought any pop/chart type stuff but I have 'got' to the attraction that ppl feel towards this.

I think it's:

-pop is comfort food
-pop is the amateur sociologist's great guilty pleasure
-pop is a producer's medium and so it has the potential to be as experimental and weird as any other muso-wank
-pop is the property of kids and it has the potential to be totally exhilaratingly awesomely retarded (e.g. "Gossip Folks")

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 23 March 2003 10:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Jody couldn't be more OTM.

But the greatest bit is that even w/in that broad framework you can be selective / define an aesthetic.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 23 March 2003 10:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Matos' best of 2002 have given me great joy. Lots of new music. i have begun searching for other people to exchange music with here.
