I like "Service and Repair" and want more of that kind of stuff - not the mariachi / speghetti western stuff - what's the more song-oriented Calexico / Giant Sand / Howe Gelb stuff? Some specific songs to download would be nice.

Howe Gelb's cover of Can't Help Falling in Love is nice. As for Giant Sand, download most anything off Chore of Enchantment. I'm partial to "Shiver" myself.

I rather like the OP8 album with Lisa Germano -- all of it.

GS: Everything on Chore of Enchantment and Center of the Universe. Specific songs: Blue Marble Girl, Yer Ropes, X-Tra Wide, No Reply, Shrine, Pathfinder, Sonic Drive In. All his albums are phantastic. You can't go wrong.

Calexico: The Black Light and Aerocalexico are my fave albums of theirs. Songs: Crooked Road and the Briar, Clothes of Sand (Nick Drake cover).

I'll second the Chore Of Enchantment and Center Of The Universe nods. Elevator Music off Purge & Slouch is great too.

five years pass...

Almost everything on Calexico's EPs are pretty unf---kwithable, e.g., Even My Sure Things Fall Through; Convict Pool. Feast Of Wine is dynamite, too. I have high hopes for the new disc, despite the miss-step that was Garden Ruin (which had its charms, albeit more generic charms).

The Giant Sand 91-2001 comp is a fantastic introduction. Many of their early 90s albums are out of print, so it's the easiest place to get a lot of that stuff. Their cover of Lee Hazelwood's Sand, with Lisa Germano, is fantastic, as is their take on the Byrds' Change Is Come. A highlight of the set is their collaboration with Rainer, The Inner Light. Stunning performance.
My favourite Gelb originals on there would have to be Corridor (widescreen, subtle, beautiful) and Yer Ropes (urgent rocker).

Happy to second the recommendation of Chore and Centre. The former is an elegiac tribute to their old friend and bandmate Rainer. Has jazzbo pop like Temptation Of Egg, gorgeous country like Shiver, and some industrial desert heaviness like Satellite. Really great record. Centre Of The Universe is superb too - grungy, bubblegum desert rock.

Howe's country project, Band Of Blacky Ranchette, have a fine album called Still Lookin' Good. The highlight is the stunning duet between Neko Case and Richard Buckner, Got It Made. Nice bandoleon solo too.
Arizona Amp and Alternator is one of his best recent efforts.

Really looking forward to the new Giant Sand album. Word is it's quite lush, in a Lee Hazelwood kinda way. Think it's out September/October.

Yeah,Chore Of Enchantment and Arizona Amp & Alternator, and his Danish friends from the latter are on the new one, proVisions (release date was still Sept, 2, last I heard). Guests incl Neko Case, Isobell Campbell, M. Ward. It's pretty cool, a little faster than some previous. This one's good too:

Somebody really needs to reissue The Love Songs.

What he said. Great record.

Not too into the new Calexico tune. It's ok as atmospheric indie, but I miss the Morricone and Mariachi influences.

New GS tune sounds good though.

Oh yeah, new one on today's PaperThinWalls, turns out.
