Music you've never heard that you don't listen to just because you don't like the way other people talk them up

Right now, for me, Turbonegro. I haven't heard them just out of random spite, pretty much.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Sunday, 23 March 2003 07:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I can name all the emo bands I've actually bothered to hear on my 10 fingers (and have one left over to flip them all off).

paul cox (paul cox), Sunday, 23 March 2003 07:45 (twenty-three years ago)

There's lots of bands I've heard of but never heard, but never for the reason you mention. I just don't have unlimited resources is all.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 23 March 2003 08:04 (twenty-three years ago)

You know, like, they sound interesting to you and all, and you'd normally just d/l an mp3 or something, but don't for no good reason other than that something about the way that people talk about them turns you off... Ha, sorry, I guess this is a little too specific, isn't it?

Dan I. (Dan I.), Sunday, 23 March 2003 08:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmm, well...I still haven't heard anything by 50 Cent. Not because of any active hostility toward his stuff, but because of general apathy.

paul cox (paul cox), Sunday, 23 March 2003 08:28 (twenty-three years ago)

No way Dan, I've been totally turned off to Turbonegro by reviews I've read. They just sound aggressively stupid. Very often I sort of have a soft spot for bands that are aggressively stupid that I stumble across myself. Been when everyone goes out of there way to laud a band that sounds aggressively stupid I'm quite wary.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 23 March 2003 08:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd have a lot more to contribute to a thread of bands that I SHOULD have avoided, given the reviews or the buzz. But I didn't. I'll never learn.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 23 March 2003 08:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I realized tonight that "Get It On" is a rip of a Ramones song.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 23 March 2003 08:52 (twenty-three years ago)

The reason Turbo Negro deserves to get alked up is for the hooks. But whenever you ask somebody about them all you'll ever get is an explanation which expects you to really like the idea of a band that has an album called 'ass cobra' and a song called 'rendesvous with anus'. "Come on man, how can you not love this band, they have a tune called 'rock against ass!'"

Also since epitaph is now repressing everything stateside they're much easier to get ahold of.

My answer to this question would be The Grateful Dead, Widespread Panic, and any and all jam band type music/proggy art bullshit. Because whenever people talk them up they never really talk about the songs, they just talk about horrible dumb bullshit and/or blanket vague statements - oh wait rockcrit nevermind. But it's also the kind of people who talk about them - ugh ugggh ugh ugh.

Millar (Millar), Sunday, 23 March 2003 09:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Plus I've more or less lived all the AC/DC records for like 17 years so what's the point?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 23 March 2003 10:01 (twenty-three years ago)

eyes dead. cool. superior. younger
i often hate things i've previously liked because kids with no brains like them. Sad old man i am.

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 23 March 2003 10:07 (twenty-three years ago)

often even hate things

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 23 March 2003 10:08 (twenty-three years ago)

er.. Is that directed at me gaz? I never said I hated Turbonegro; I simply have no desire to check them out. Oh it's a really stupid guitar band? Great, go for it! It's just not for me right now, I'm listening to plenty of other great fresh new music.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 23 March 2003 10:16 (twenty-three years ago)

no, sorry Mr Diamond nothing to do with you. to do with the youngsters where i work. who think they know more thatn me without the benefit of a conversation at minimum.

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 23 March 2003 10:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, so you're with me my brother!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 23 March 2003 10:25 (twenty-three years ago)

sex pistols. brattish and silly.

matthew james (matthew james), Sunday, 23 March 2003 11:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Disposable pop 'cause of the way it's treated like the second coming at ILX. Pearl Jam back in the day. Alot of IDM because it seems to be too much work; though I dig Boards of Canada.

S Samson, Sunday, 23 March 2003 11:34 (twenty-three years ago)

IDM IDM IDM. Anything tangentially related to IDM or DJ Shadow or both. Any collaboration between DJ Shadow and Tigerbeat 6 and any other IDM person. Admittedly for a really stupid reason, when I was 10 I used to sing into an electric fan and fuck around with a little school cassette deck and tape electric toothbrushes whirring at different speeds etc and nobody gave a fuck then, so why should *I* give a fuck now?

dave q, Sunday, 23 March 2003 11:42 (twenty-three years ago)

You summed up my reasons for not liking IDM, Dave Q.

S Samson, Sunday, 23 March 2003 11:44 (twenty-three years ago)

daveq it sounds like you made the best music ever

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 23 March 2003 12:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Dave Q could probably at least get an EP on Warp with that

and I love some IDM for the reasons with which you describe yr hatred

I don't think I'm ever going to like either Turbonegro or Lightning Bolt based on the way people say those groups are going to rock my fucking ass off. Leave my ass alone.

Although I guess that is also an argument for diving right into Turbonegro, no?

Neudonym, Sunday, 23 March 2003 12:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Lightning Bolt. But their fans are REALLY HARD TO TAKE.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 23 March 2003 12:40 (twenty-three years ago)

> Dave Q could probably at least get an EP on Warp with that

no, no, NO - Mille Plateaux 's the label to go fo'!

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 23 March 2003 12:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Dave Q would make a good warp artist. His oblique name. His heavy internet usage. Dave Q could be the Beatles of IDM!

S Samson, Sunday, 23 March 2003 12:58 (twenty-three years ago)

'm still convinced - Mille Plateaux! c'mon - "the deterritorialisation of electric toothbrushes"!! Warp simply wouldn't kno how to promote that!

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 23 March 2003 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't really have any desire to ever hear Interpol.

kate (suzy), Sunday, 23 March 2003 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't listen to Interpol for the longest time, because of the hype. Finally I did. They turned out to be one of my favourite bands currently working.

Callum (Callum), Sunday, 23 March 2003 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

mr. bungle

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Sunday, 23 March 2003 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

eminem.

disco stu (disco stu), Sunday, 23 March 2003 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

The Strokes, The White Stripes, Radiohead. I have nothing against these groups, but damn....talk about overexposure. I'd much rather hear Yo la Tengo or The Shins.

William R Henderson (Cabin Essence), Sunday, 23 March 2003 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Eminem seconded.

maria b (maria b), Sunday, 23 March 2003 15:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Eminem thirded.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 23 March 2003 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

i didnt listen to the velvet underground for many years due to all the hype/worship/drool

kephm, Sunday, 23 March 2003 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Part of the reason I'm on ILM is to hear people hype stuff up and then go check it out. Who is doing the "talking up" here? Are we talking about industry hype or your freinds?

Sean (Sean), Sunday, 23 March 2003 17:07 (twenty-three years ago)

either, i assume.

Interpol are really good, and not nearly as derivative as they're made out to be - i think that oft-quoted Joy Division similarity is blown way out of proportion.

Neudonym is OTM. Lightning Bolt bore me to tears, and the only Turbonegro I have ever heard is "I Got Erection" (thank you mr wheeler) and hearing others talk it up has kept me from listening for two seconds plus. Also Ween.

Dave M. (rotten03), Sunday, 23 March 2003 19:01 (twenty-three years ago)

the yeah yeah yeahs.

Evan (Evan), Sunday, 23 March 2003 19:30 (twenty-three years ago)

people talking stuff up that i have never heard is great and makes me want to hear them, even if it wont be my kind of thing - possible exceptions are Merzbow and Masonna tho

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 23 March 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)
