Planet Asia, Cali Agents, Rasco

The magnificent "It's On" by Planet Asia just came on random play. I got stuff by them, Rasco and Cali Agents a while ago (including an awesome Copasetik compilation that I left at a coke dealership) and hadn't given them a thought until now.

I understand they're all pretty related as far as output goes and I'd also forgot that the lot of them are probably my favourite things ever in the whole hip hop world for reasons I can't explain and would prefer not to think about. To me they just sound so goddamn right - personal highlights include "Gunz still hot", "How many X's" and "Major league" the Rasco collab with Dilated Peoples.

A quick scan of my mp3's says I haven't got much by them anymore, so recommendations for purchase, people, as well as thoughts, big-ups, big-downs and related listening ideas if you please.

I have the Planet Asia album Still in Training which I completely love, wrote a piece about it on LPTJ. All these MC's are on Peanut Butter Wolf's utterly incredible My Vinyl Weighs a Ton. Rasco's dead, isn't he? One of Peanut Butter Wolf's associates died, thought maybe it was Rasco but I could be wrong. Either way, one of Rasco's lines on My Vinyl is so deleriously obscene that it continues to amaze me listening after listening: "Soon as ni**az open they mouth, I start shittin'."

Like, whoa.

Got the new Planet Asia 12", it's good -- apparently Universal signed him and then dropped him before releasing an album, which is a shame 'cause often these sorts of doings beach artists permanently. Doesn't seem to be the case with Asia, and hurrah, because he is just so so wonderful.

And now I gotta get out of here before Ethan calls me a racist for listening to this stuff instead of Puffy

Planet Asia is one of my favorite mc's, but he's done a lot of crap. I don't really like the Cali Agents stuff I've heard honestly, but his out of print self-titled EP is fantastic (god that sounds elitist).

Charizma is the dead PBW associate in question, I think. Rasco's still alive, right?

Planet Asia seems to me to always promise a lot but never quite deliver. He's done a couple of amazing tracks, but releases an awful lot of tedious by-the-book indie crap.

Rasco is definitely inferior.

I'd destroy most of Cali Agents "How the west was one" apart from the one track on it that I can't remember the name of, but was great. Also destroy Planet Asia "Holding the Crown" album which has nothing worthwhile.

Search Asia and Kweli collaboration single from a couple years back - it was really nice.

I got Planet Asia's first EP (can't remember the name)...it's good, but nothing to write home about.
