Bands and Bandits

A fellow Pavement fan says he loves all their stuff except for tracks with Spiral Stairs on vocals like "Date W/Ikea". Apparently Malkmus recently recorded a song that slags off Stairs all the way through.

I can understand this hatred as a Brian Wilson obsessive who has a sincere loathing for Mike Love. Stupid retrogressive fashnrashn talentless git...

Other bands like Blur have their own villains who aren't actually band members but often depicted as baddies when it comes to the story of that band (see David Balfe).

And of course everyone has a Beatle whom they hate (as well as one they love of course).

Any more infamous Band Banditos? Is there anyone associated with a favourite artist you hate with passion? The Crimestoppers team would like to speak to you. Please post your woes below...

I actually really liked Spiral's contributions to Pavement. He was the anonymous warm-up comic to SM's Letterman, keeping the audience entertained with solid, reliable material while the big guy took a piss break.

personally, i didn't realise he even sang on any of the songs. I don't mind Date With Ikea either. What other songs did he sing on?

I used to hate Roger Daltrey, and still do in videos and live footage(though on album he's fine). Nobody should march around shirtless if they're blocking our view of Keith Moon.

I love Spiral Stairs. He's their Tobin Sprout, and I think Stephen's first solo album would have benefitted by the two or three best songs on the Preston School Of Industry album. He sang "Kennel District," "Western Homes," "Two States," "Painted Soldiers," and the great B-Side "Winner Of The..."

I can't hate Doug Yule. His voice is dandy on a lot of those VU songs and Lou's the one who quit. They didn't throw him out.

Mike Love I do hate, though "Kokomo" is a force of nature.

I have a certain amount of disdain for Michael Stipe, though like Daltrey, he's usually fine on record (particularly pre-Monster). Thom Yorke qualifies in this category.

at least on the "unplugged" version of the Cure's Greatest Hits, I hate Roger O'Donnell. That keyboard he's playing is ass.

I might like Korn if they'd replace Fieldy with a guy whose bass doesn't sound like a flat tire with snow chains on it.

I hate BERNARD BUTLER. His music is ass and he was holding Suede down with big ass bloated glut operas.

i don't like Flava Flav. i know Griff is supposed to be the bandit, and Flav the lovable loon. But....aaargh, shut the fuck up.

gaz - yeh, i know what you mean. I always think he sounds like the big bully's jerky little mate who eggs everyone on without getting his own hands dirty going "kick'im kick'im - throw grass in 'is face! bwoy!".

Debbie Harry -- as a lyricist, not a singer. Jimmy Destri and Chris Stein wrote most of her best songs, and Harry wrote most of her worst.

she was eye candy.

Metallica, where the fuck do you start. Lucky for them one of them died so they could have a member EVERYONE liked

It should really be a band where you like them (or people generally do) but there's a glitch on the radar who fucks shit up or has made them infamous (justified or not).

Other examples:
Yoko Ono
Ken from the Black Dog.

Jason Spaceman firing his band. Though having sat through a Lupine Howl show I am beginning to understand way!
