"Grunge" benefited a few times. Kim Thayil from Soundgarden uses it superbly on Superunknown, I think Alice in Chains also had some good songs using it, even quite overtly.

Curtis Mayfield was the master of the wah pedal. Soul wah > Rock wah

The Stooges - 1969
(Iggy belching out "babehehehehehehehehehehehehkrghghrhghrhgrhgh...[=being strangled]" which transforms into the guitar-coda of the song with nice wahwahstuff!)

willem (willem), Monday, 24 March 2003 08:10 (twenty-three years ago)

When was it misused, really?
I mean, it's been used in the service of crappy music,
but so have guitars and amps.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Monday, 24 March 2003 09:57 (twenty-three years ago)

To answer the question, Hendrix was the only one who
really knew how to use a wah properly.
And I think wahs sound shite in straight up metal.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Monday, 24 March 2003 09:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Mick Ronson ("Suffragette City") and Eddie Van Halen ("Romeo Delight") use it brilliantly, ie you don't even know they're using one until halfway thru the solo when one note seems to 'bite' more than the previous, then the subsequent notes start dopplering'n'shit and it's like 'wow, whole new level'. Just because you can rock back and forth on it really quick doesn't mean you HAVE to. Ronson's stuff sounds more interesting to me every time I hear it, rare enough for music (not to mention 'things'), almost completely unheard-of when it comes to gtr players, and my tolerance for gtr solos is easily 5000% higher most ppl's

dave q, Monday, 24 March 2003 11:12 (twenty-three years ago)

also re wahs in 'straight-up metal' - Slash = Ronson on Ritalin w/ half his brain removed

dave q, Monday, 24 March 2003 11:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry but I love wahs and will defend them beyond all necessity. Anybody who hates them but likes acid house cuz of the 303s is a cunt. Filters, same thing, a tone oscillator is a tone oscillator is a great thing!

dave q, Monday, 24 March 2003 11:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I dont HATE the Wha (I have one of my own). I find it hard to love

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Monday, 24 March 2003 15:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Zappa would solo for like 20 minutes at a time with his wah in its most nasalish treble position, just to be a dick.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 24 March 2003 15:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I personally prefer wah-wah when used as a means to make melodic passages more lyrical over wah-wah when used as a rhythmic "wakka-chikka-wakka-chikka" tool.

For example of first, see: Funkadelic's "Maggot Brain".
For example of second, see: Faith No More's "Be Aggressive".

BTW, "wah-wah" is no more than a filter, like the little knob(s) on a synthesizer. The name was a way to market it to dumbass guitarists who wouldn't understand what a filter would do to their guitar's sound.

I like the idea of a "wha?" pedal tho.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Monday, 24 March 2003 16:15 (twenty-three years ago)

My favourite usage is on "Show me the Way" by Dinosaur Jr.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Monday, 24 March 2003 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

best evah: "theme from CHiPs"

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 24 March 2003 16:35 (twenty-three years ago)

C'mon, people: Pete Cosey!! His wah guitar on Miles's Agharta MELTS MY BRANE. It sounds like he's strangling the crap out of it. I have just one word to say, and that's "Damn."

While we're at it: Mr. Volume Pedal is Bill Frisell.
