FOLK ROCKERS WHO LOVE DEATH METAL AND POP

Not directed at the Goatman himself but I was wondering - in singing love torn songs and listening to death metal and pop; what relevance has that on the music that these people produce? Should you not be listening to other lovelorn folkies?

I.E. Bill Calahan always talking about Destiny's Child instead of Songs:Ohio. Is it a need to escape the folk music? What are you thoughts?

Why would I listen to stuff I already know how to do?

Yeah, actually after typing out that question I had already answered it in my head but was annoyed that I had typed it out. Waste not, want not! : - D

But why not to versions of EXTREME NOISE TERROR or ACE OF BASE - or does that lead you into busking territory?

(not that I don't listen to other acoustic-guitar-and-voice people, I do, it just takes a hell of lot more to impress me in a field where I (hopefully) have a keener understanding of what's going on)

(P.S. I resent the f*ck out of the term 'folk rock,' f'in PLEASE)

Folk Funk, then? Bahahaha. O.k., music. The music. (Terms terms terms - psych-folk of the american scream)

What's been impressing you lately, John?

This is the point where I would politely ask to go to the bathroom and then struggle through the window and run off down the street!

Enon's 7"s -- so awesome & weird! and a band from somewhere in western England called Mister Lee, and the Necks, and everything on the Family Vineyard label except for the Rope album

(also I dig the extraordinarily folky Iron & Wine album, though I'm still waiting for any lyricist besides Craig Finn to completely knock me flat)

(I did not understand yr ask-to-go-the-bathroom post as I am dense & sleepy besides)

i play mostly acoustic music (when solo, which I prefer) and I listen to lots of grindcore (Pig Destroyer and Lamb of God are my favorites at the moment) - I think it goes back to what John said - and if you listen too closely to like-minded folks, before you know it, you're stealing without realizing it.

Metal came first and reappeared for me years later when I realized that the Borbetomagus and Merzbow records I loved so much gave me the same feeeling as Holy Diver. To borrow a phrase, "it's all good"

That said, I DO listen to lots of 'folk / singersongwriter/ etc' shit

oh, dammit. dammit. lamb of god isn't grindcore, dammit! when you will people learn?! (abrupt end of rant i've been performing since 1988 or so)

"holy diver" is SO fucking great, the people just don't know.

"holy diver" is SO fucking great

your null fame speaks the pure unadulterated TRUTH

*tsk* there's always new tricks to be learned!

(and different ideas to steal..)

...and also the risk of getting caught stealing ideas: no risk if you're not exposed to the ideas in the first place!

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 00:23 (twenty-three years ago)

i also like to use them as a barometer for measuring idea quality

'tis true, it can be argued the Lamb aren't grindcore, per se, but PURE AMERICAN METAL. Either way, their records (as LOG and Burn the Priest) are great. I'm psyched for the new one.
