Today's pop is tomorrow's indie. The "bootlegging craze" = indie whether you like it or not. It's like Jess' argument on some previous thread that all indie is basically pop anyway Melissa called me on my doing similar swerves once and I wish she'd posted a thread. So why still use words like "indie" and "pop"? Tom ebrosuk.co.uk, May 28th, 2002 3:00 PM.I don't think of 'indie' or 'pop' as types of music, but as attitudes to music and listening to music. Listening to something because it's 'good' = indie; listening to something because you like it = pop; having to think about whether you like something or not, or what kind of music it is, etc. = definitely indie ie the whole point of ILM. alext alextholyrood.ed.ac.uk, May 29th, 2002 3:00 PM.Isn't part of the issue, though, the fact that indie is the most self- depreciating of the musical genres? Dom Passantino killallgothshotmail., May 29th, 2002 3:00 PM.Cos it fits with Alex's conception of indie as original sin, Dare - "pop" listening in his system is a prelapsarian state of innocence, and all listening from the moment self-awareness as a listener begins is "indie". Tom ebrosuk.co.uk, May 29th, 2002 3:00 PM.So on the model I was pondering, indie and pop bee not entities 'I like pop, you like indie' but poles towards which people's consumption of music tends. So you can consume Destiny's Child in an indie way. I think I wanted to suggest that there is a genuine tension between pop and indie ways of listening to music, since one is evaluative and tends to dismiss other music not necessarily on genre grounds while the other is more open and doesn't necessarily categorize at all caring about whether something is pop or dance or metal or not = indie. Listening to something because it's 'good' = indie; listening to something because you like it = pop; having to think about whether you like something or not, or what kind of music it is, etc. = definitely indie 1 Setting up "pop" and "indie" as the two poles just doesn't make any sense to me, especially because indie is NOT at all the ultimate example of "Listening to something because it's 'good'"; The distinction I'm attempting to play with is between a consuming music in a pop fashion; b consuming it in an indie fashion. alext alextholyrood.ed.ac.uk, May 29th, 2002 3:00 PM.I mean, why wouldn't people who like indie like music from other genres that has affinities with indie?" The "indie = the center" image works well here: rather than simply exploring the borders of adjacent styles whose very proximity causes their characteristics to blur with indie's as per N*tsuh's formulation, the indie press imagine indie as a sun around which other styles orbit, lit up only when their faces are turned towards indie, and cold and dark when facing away. Without indie, these styles are shapeless forms of rock, and it is only indie's energy or, rather, its values and qualities which gives them life, growth, meaning. tfinneybigpond..au, May 29th, 2002 3:00 PM.**So on the model I was pondering, indie and pop bee not entities 'I like pop, you like indie' but poles towards which people's consumption of music tends** This thread sucks. In that sense we're talking about pop and indie as modes of reception vs pop and indie as styles. My question, N*tsuh, was more: is there a concrete reason why trying to listen for "pop" values in anything is better than trying to listen for "indie" values. tfinneybigpond..au, May 29th, 2002 3:00 PM.This indie Quality that's really what the indie kids mean when they say "good," even if they don't always realize that?" Most people I know who are deeply into classical music have most of the traits ascribed to the mythical indie listener in far larger quantities. If anything, my initial experiences with indie gave me the impression that it seemed less discriminating and more omnivorous. I don't think listening to music because it's good should be equated with indie. Phil phi.lmasstransfer., May 29th, 2002 3:00 PM.I for one am not trying to attribute the 'indie' tendency to each and every person who listens to indie music. We could switch the terms and talk about indie kids listening to their music in a hip-hop purist kind of way and it would make no difference to the argument. Yeah the words "indie" and "pop" have bee labels for what Alex and Tim are talking about, rather than the things theyre talking about being actual descriptions of "indie" and "pop". This is why all these big spectacular ILM theory threads wear me out in the end - because the actual experiences of people listening to indie and not-indie music get lost in the fog. Oasis: Clasic or Dud? (Complete and unabridged!)
Yuck. The Limp Bizkit of 'indie'. now there are still around 10 Oasis songs i like (possibly even including 'Songbird'). classic. A resounding DUD. Like (I suspect) a majority of American music fans, I think I'll remember Oasis as a pretty good band with some pretty killer, memorable alt-radio singles (Live Forever, Supersonic (I think that's what it's called), Champagne Supernova, Wonderwall, and Stop Crying You Heart Out, etc...) but I don't really understand what all the fuss was about in the UK over Oasis.....I certainly don't think they were a dud though... Dud. Classic, for Definitely Maybe alone. I like Morning Glory. Oh well. I just think they were in the right place at the right time. Definitely beans. Also, in what sense, exactly, were they "indie"?? I mean, they were a vaguely glammy guitar-pop band. Period - about as "indie" as the Black Crowes. ... I've never considered them indie, or huge, or particularly sounding like the Beatles (stealing lyrical and melodic phrases does not necessarily = "sounding like") I've never considered them indie I've always noticed this prob. on ILM between the Brits and Americans...it's like America has this very defined idea of "indie" (usually a record label thing) and in England it's like....4 Guys....Guitar music....not heavy metal or mohawk-type straight up punk....It's Indie! No we don't, whoever said Oasis were indie was wrong, that's all. Then again, if it is strictly about record labels, then Depeche Mode and New Order were "indie" bands. >> in England it's like....4 Guys....Guitar music....not heavy metal or mohawk-type straight up punk....It's Indie!<< So are Third Eye Blind and Smashmouth indie too, then? .)(I mean, it's taken me a while to understand the whole "indie is kind of music" rather than "indie is something on an indie label" line, but even the "kind of music" that people usually refer to as indie doesn't usually include plain old mainstream rock bands, right?) So: indie, right? Oh yeah, I forgot Oasis were on Creation in the UK (I live in the States now, so forgive me) Oasis were on Creation Records, thus INDIE Unngh, Oasis were indie because they released their records on Creation. Third Eye Blind and Smashmouth release their records on major record labels, therefore they are not indie. LET'S SETTLE THIS ONCE AND FOR ALL: Indie and all its subgenres (indie-rock, indie-dance, etc.) are NOT styles of music. There's no such thing as indie in the musical sense, and that's why ILM has such a hard time describing indie: because it doesn't exist! 1994-1996 = classic on almost every level even if the second album was rubbish. Oasis were NEVER a fucking indie band. I disagree with the sentiment that indie isn't a style of music. I don't consider Black Flag, The Gossip, or the Drive-By Truckers "indie rock." I've never seen it as a cut-and-dry label issue. (Hi Chuck!) Neither classic nor dud. indie as music, not lifestyle - 'Supersonic' and 'Columbia' in particular had an indieish vibe although the guitar was a bit too heavy-rock sounding hence the confusion and dilution of indie once Britpop became a popular term. To me they represent an abject surrender by "rock music" in the face of "club music". 1st album was great, 2nd album was good but waaay overrated and definitely not a classic, after that, it's strictly the occasional brilliant single. Despite the short period of excellence, I've got to go "classic" because they were just SO HUGE from 1994-1996. Classic for "Acquiesce"; Dud for most of the rest; Super-Dud for their contribution to "lad culture" and Beatles necrophilia. Smashmouth and Third Eye Blind didn't wear parkas. Oasis did. I never considered Oasis a necessarily bad band, but they were certainly never worthy of the praise and success they entertained. i liked 'morning glory'. third album - nah - don't do coke rock unless its fleetwood mac. fourth album was a wash out though i think little james is a classic. didnt buy fifth album. might d/l sixth album. Everybody's right! ha ha ha! ha ha. Oasis though the `scope: The tunes - Inoffensive, if not entirely unoriginal. And overrated. The lyrics - Mostly shit. The image (if you care about that sort've thing) - Utterly boring. " Album cover art - Yawnsome. liam's silent thug-lite routine is quite good. For Definitely Maybe, half of What's The Story and The Masterplan, classic. Patsy Kensit. first 2 albums are classic. Definition of DUD.
