"The perfect crystallisation of their sound!"

not sure if this (frequently used) intended compliment actually is a compliment. generally implies that liking this album is reliant on you being a fan of this band's "sound" rather than it just being a splendid piece of music in it's own right. possibly if it was followed by an explanation as to why a crystallisation of this particular sound is one worth checking out...

for instance, "origin of symmetry" is undoubtedly the perfect crystallisation of the Muse sound. believe me when i say that it provides everything you expect from muse and more. truly there will be nothing more muse-y released again. believe me also when i say that it is a big pile of poo.

so, what albums perfectly crystallise a band's sound for you? examples good and bad are welcome...

Hate does it for The Delgados almost perfect. It's like how you feel they wanted the Great Eastern to sound, but it's all tight, it all clicks, every single component part in absolute harmony with every other, all pulling in the same direction and being utterly fucking amazing... Light Before We Land - best excessive use of strings evah.

I might have got it a bit better here. But not sure.

not sure it's an insult at all--the word "culmination" seems more appropriate here, if even more rock-criticky (ugh yeah I know).
faves: Luna's Penthouse, Prince, Sign 'O' the Times. also, the Moonshine comp Speed Limit 140 BPM Plus Three, which I've been playing a lot all of a sudden lately, sums up everything I like about the transition between breakbeat hardcore and full-on jungle

Boo Radleys - C'Mon Kids
Autechre - LP5
Radiohead - OK Computer
etc. etc. etc.

it's always the most popular/best one that's the crystallisation/ the one that everyone thinks of.

sorry, tired and a bit pished.

i actually used this phrase about Low's "secret Name" on the "what's your fave 1999 rec" thread a while back. being a huge fan of low's sound, i obviously meant it as a compliment. but to someone with only a passing interest in low, they might read it merely as "this was the low fanclub's favourite album of the year!"

Charlie, Giant Steps is far and away a better album but I reckon C'mon Kids was a happy medium between the experimentation of GS and the poppiness of Wake Up! so it's a good representation of the Boos.
