K records shits all over Kranky. K Recs = home of the hitz!

Take Jim's equation and reverse. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 07:21 (twenty-three years ago)

kranky, home of the zzzzzz's == where's my pillow?

to be honest, a few nice things tucked away in Kranky's catalogue (like Dissolve, Flies Inside The Sun, etc), but overall a lot of not very interesting drone (and I like drone too, too -- i mean, it is all about repetition, music that is).

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 07:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Kranky has Labradford, Dadamah and Stars of the Lid (classic) but they also had Spiny Anteaters, GYBE, and Fontanella (dud)

K has Microphones (mostly classic) but involves Ian Svenonius, Calvin Johnston, and Olympia, Washington (mostly dud)

I'll go Kranky here.

didn't both these labels stop putting out worthwile material like 5-10 years ago?

sorry, i'll see my jaded ass out the door

JasonD (JasonD), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 08:38 (twenty-three years ago)

K was home of Modest Mouse, so they win.

David Allen, Tuesday, 25 March 2003 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

K love-in Vs Kranky's cranky attitude.

Both even have special artless promo copies with short descriptions. I love that, or at least used to.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 16:33 (twenty-three years ago)

k-ill me now.

kranky by miles and miles, and i woulda said that even before last year.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Was going to pick K until Modest Mouse was invoked. Now must reassess.

Miranda (Miranda), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 18:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Both have released things I love dearly. I may have shifted more to the Kranky side of the axis of late (The Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid is one of my favorite things ever), but K were far more important in my formative (listening-wise) years. Beat Happening, Tiger Trap, and Heavenly will forever be favorites, and although my love has waned with the most recent release, I'm still pretty fond of the Microphones.

On the K tip, with one listen behind me, the new All Girl Summer Fun Band album delivers the fun. I didn't like the last one at all - not sure how this one is different, just know that it put a smile on my face almost immediately.

Miranda (Miranda), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 18:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Kranky! (gee, big surprise there)

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

although k owns something dear to my heart, it also is partly own/ran by calvin johnson, therefore = the biggest dud in the history of dud-doom, no matter what kranky put out.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I like more stuff on K than on Kranky, but at least the head of Kranky doesn't post on makeout club.

praying mantis (praying mantis), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:01 (twenty-three years ago)

i should find out where he lives and whip cupcakes at him

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

four years pass...

K was home of Modest Mouse, so they win lose.

Why did K never reissue the Go Team?

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 22 September 2007 00:57 (eighteen years ago)

Also please tell me stories about how Calvin is a creepy sleazebag, to put me off K records and thereby potentially save me money.

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 22 September 2007 01:11 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know about the sleazebag part, but boy he really did seem kind of creepy when I saw Beat Happening play (a few times). In a way, that actually makes me like them more.

dlp9001, Saturday, 22 September 2007 01:33 (eighteen years ago)

yeah he would fix various audience members with this fierce intense stare, and just went around the room projecting intensely onto each person (this was in, like, 1991, on the tour w/Stuart Moxham). It was definitely a bit unsettling.

Overall, I prefer K although I listen to a fair amount of Kranky as well. K releases good songs, Kranky releases good sounds.

Nah that makes me like him more. Oh well.

Tape Store, Saturday, 22 September 2007 03:17 (eighteen years ago)

yeehaw. When is that coming out, anyway? I keep checking kpunk for official word, but nothing.

I saw him play a solo show two years ago to a room of about 25 people. He walked around the room strumming his guitar with that stare. And then add that voice too. Creepy to say the least.

van smack, Saturday, 22 September 2007 03:22 (eighteen years ago)

Speaking of K, I was weirded out by all the usual-suspect mp3 blogs that cheered K records on for their recent 25th anniversary last week. Weirded out because they ALL framed the shout-out by saying "Asthmatic Kitty is celebrating K records 25th Anniversary! Way to go, K!"

Which is weird, because it obviously means none of these people pay any attention to the 25-year-old K records but they're all on the mailing list for Sufjan's little label. I find that sad. Congratulations, K!

pgwp, Saturday, 22 September 2007 04:20 (eighteen years ago)

When is that coming out, anyway?

Not sure, but I can't get enough of "Those Birds are Bats." I love Sludge-Pop!

Why did K never reissue the Go Team?
