was it the original that was really fast
(like twice as fast as the sugababes)
or was it a remix ?

piscesboy, Tuesday, 25 March 2003 18:07 (twenty-three years ago)

you're probably thinking of the garage mix, although the original is faster than the sugababes version, yes.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 18:10 (twenty-three years ago)

was it dead dead garagey or just dead garagey or
only a bit ?

piscesboy, Tuesday, 25 March 2003 18:28 (twenty-three years ago)

i was 98 or 99...so, pretty R&B but with a noticable garage beat

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 18:33 (twenty-three years ago)

The original made me want to hammer rusty nails into my ears.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 18:34 (twenty-three years ago)

The garage version was beyond brilliant - had the most irresistible chorus-breakdown in garage that I can think of offhand.

Both the original and the Sugababes version are great also. Is "Freak Like Me" (against all the odds) the song that cannot be ruined?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim, you are overly optimistic. Just wait for the ironic 'rawk' version by a sub-Travis/Coldplay band.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually I don't think it would be as bad as, say, Travis doing "Baby, One More Time" - notably because the Sugababes have already proved that the track can handle being turned into a dirge.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:06 (twenty-three years ago)

hah, i can totally hear a band like the dismemberment plan - who i like, if not love - frugging on stage to a listless, "funky" ironic cover

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes that would actually be much worse than anything Travis could contrive. (is the possibility of debasement a parabola on the grid of understanding? Is an "ironic appreciation" actually more irritating if it's half-right than if it's totally, irredeemably wrong?)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:30 (twenty-three years ago)

irony removes friction

friction is key to funk

"ironic knowingness" tries to re-insert too much of a learned friction to compensate for lack of spontenaiety, thereby flattening the plane even further? (the dis plan using "funky" bass and the singer's hamfisted hip-hop attempts.)

"ironic obliviousness" gets it so wrong it creates a new kind of friction by transporting it into a totally new context? (pavement-style indie pop obscuring it into a total "debris slide" noise bath.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:38 (twenty-three years ago)

(tru faith & dub conspiracy, anyone?)

Ess Kay (esskay), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:44 (twenty-three years ago)

The dancehall version is my fave.

They have the Adina Howard version for Karaoke use at the Brass Monkey in LA. I've been practicing at home.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 05:54 (twenty-three years ago)

the original sounds exactly like chronic-era Dr Dre with strummy guitars, don't know if it's him though

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 27 March 2003 00:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Hasn't she since renounced the track, having inevitably found God and whatnot?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 27 March 2003 00:10 (twenty-three years ago)

After seeing that picture, I think I've found God, too.

Oh wait, that's not God, that's Raging Libido. Never mind.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 March 2003 00:36 (twenty-three years ago)

What are its ten commandments?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 March 2003 01:21 (twenty-three years ago)

1. Thou shalt not sleep on the bodacious booty.
2. Thou shalt not hate on a righteous tube top.
3. Thou shalt not pretend that girl ain't fly just 'cuz you're married.
4. Thou shalt not get caught mackin' on the booty at work.
5. Thou shalt not forget to copy that JPEG to your home hard drive.
6. Thou shalt not put the picture in a folder easily noticeable to an excitable wife.
7. Thou shalt not forget to spend a few moments remember the "Freak Like Me" video and grinning.
8. Damn! That booty!
9. Thou shalt not forget to notice the kneepads and giggle at mid-90s fashion.
10. Thou shalt not let the Severed Heads song playing on your headphones distract you from the BODACIOUS BOOTY. Even if it is "Legion". Well, okay, take a few minutes to feel the icy Aussie-funk, then GET BACK TO THE BOOTY.

it is a jam

this must be the garage mix mentioned upthread?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHuIc7e4aAE

and this must be what is commonly known as old ilx:
