...Else ye be cast of ILM for ETERNITY!

Now I've got the backstory, I both thoughtfully and mischievously unleash a new indie guilt thread on TH3 W0RLD!!!!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 18:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Do you keep a count when doing mixtapes so your friends don't think you're TOO indie???

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 18:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Or do you explicitly make an effort to drain the tape of indie in order to somehow confront them with their own lameness???

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 18:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Do you read the NME in bookstores?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 18:28 (twenty-three years ago)

NME is usually wrapped in cellophane these weeks it seems

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:27 (twenty-three years ago)

what's wrong with indie again? i forget..

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Stevem = The poet of post-indieguilt!!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

NME is usually wrapped in cellophane these weeks it seems

The NME wishes it was pornography.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Last night I went to the record store and bought all indie, but I don't really feel bad about it cos it's all really good.

Adam A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

as a grown adult, i nicked the CD out of a british music magazine to get a Peel Session version of mogwai's "new paths to helicon" at BWI. not something i'm terribly proud of, but the mag was $10 or something and the song (as it turns out) is an excellent performance.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey gygax! A true confession and an admission that you like Mogwai! All TOO rare on ILM. Well done! And after all, you started it...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

well it was BWI... if it were any other part of the world but bal'mer i'd have my reservations.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Borders and Barnes'n'Nobles never seemn to carry NME at all anymore where I live. They just have Mojo, Q, Spin, Rolling Stone, XXL and Dirty Linen.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

dude, we have had multiple mogwai threads on ILM. check the archives fool

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I just bought the last sea and cake album. It sounds exactly like a sea and cake album. I bought the new smog for my honey. It seems like that sounds exactly like a smog album, but I only heard a little bit cuz that guy's voice is starting to bug me. In fact, a lot of voices have been bugging me lately. Mostly of the indie creepy whisper variety like smog and lambchop. It's one of the reasons I don't listen to yo la tengo. It's like I can hear the saliva on their lips.Did the giant sand dude invent that child-molester creepy crawl drawl? The worst mouth sounds though that makes me shiver to this very day, are the wet throat noises that sinead o'connor makes on that a capella song of hers, i do not want whatever and ever blah blah amen or whatever its called. It makes me wanna gag. But it's probably just me.

Scott Seward, Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Side question: are Boredomes and Lightning Bolt indie?

rex jr., Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought indie ment something independant and free of mainstream influence, but now i'm just confused.
whats indie? how is it a gener? why buying indie albums is a sin? questions questions questions.

rex jr., Tuesday, 25 March 2003 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought indie ment something independant and free of mainstream influence
Something? i ment Anything.

rex jr., Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:21 (twenty-three years ago)

(*sound of can opener*)
but what do you mean by "influence?"
(*sound of worms escaping opened can*)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:27 (twenty-three years ago)

you know, chart success etc. i'm confused.

rex jr., Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Rex, you are absolutely correct. The indie-bashers will tell us that anything indie probably involves both pretension and ignorance since they think that we are incapable of liking anything BUT indie. the truth is.. people who listen to "indie" understand the importance of appreciating music outside of the mainstream stuff. it doesnt mean we don't enjoy SOME mainstream stuff.. cos we do.. it is all a matter of what you enjoy listening to. i mean, i personally think coldplay should re-enter the studio and record an album that doesn't consist of droned-out spacey guitar riffs and overproduced angsty vocals. do i hate the mainstream though? no i dont.
i saw a great quote once referring to the appeal of the mainstream and how it relates to the obscurity of underground music. The quote read: "They're not stupid. They just don't know".
haha

JP Albin (John Paul Albin), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 22:00 (twenty-three years ago)

buying "indie" albums is not a sin. i personally think it's just proof that you are not "musically retarded".

JP Albin (John Paul Albin), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 22:03 (twenty-three years ago)

are Boredomes and Lightning Bolt indie?

yes to both (even though boredoms are on warner).

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 22:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Not exectly what i said JP. The thing is i don't know what "indie kid" means, i don't think of it as a gener et al. some bands get called "indie" and some don't. My question was if there was such a "gener" called "indie" what does it sound like?
whats common betwein all the indie bands Sonicly?

rex jr., Tuesday, 25 March 2003 22:11 (twenty-three years ago)

can't believe how much the boredoms have sold out, man. warner keeps making them put together so many radio friendly singles. ;-)

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 22:34 (twenty-three years ago)

my indie sins are that i sold all my pavement records when i had a phase of dire indie guilt, and now i want them back. i also sold "mag earwhig" by gbv in same phase. furthermore, sometimes i do not keep a record of what i put on mixtapes for people.

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 22:37 (twenty-three years ago)

i feel no guilt whatsoever.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 22:43 (twenty-three years ago)

rex, the definition of an "indie kid" varies depending on who you ask. most people however will tell you that an indie kid is someone who pretty much only listens to underground obscure rock and/or pop. there are a decent amount of pretentious indie kids out there but certainly there are many who are not and just enjoy that style of music.. as far as genre goes.. i don't think it realy exists. every mainstream style of music has sub-genres. those sub-genres occasionally are called indie. take alternative rock. a sub-genre of alt. rock is indie rock. a sub-genre of pop is indie-pop and so on. what makes a band indie? well not only is the band "underground" and not accustomed to mainstream success, but the indie band will usually tweak the sound of a popular style to make it sound a little different.. these re-created sounds are typically not "radio-friendly", therefore do not make it "above ground" because they only appeal to a minority of music fans who prefer this alternative style.

JP Albin (John Paul Albin), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:23 (twenty-three years ago)

indy rock is like high school all over again, only the football team is the guys from ILM showing off how cool they are.

indykid (lucylurex), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:25 (twenty-three years ago)

there are some great 'indie' bands out there and if someone wants to label me an indie kid, they can go right ahead cos i can give a sweet rat's ass. i happen to like doo-wop as well. i listen to anything that sounds good and even some things that don't but i try haha

JP Albin (John Paul Albin), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Bought two Delgados t-shirts on the same night. Not guilty in the slightest, though - they are both very hi-quality product.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 01:31 (twenty-three years ago)

This thread is getting me to thinking I should sell my indy rock records altogether.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 01:32 (twenty-three years ago)

You know you want to.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 01:42 (twenty-three years ago)

and im thinking about destroying my radiohead CD's.
i know i want to.

JP Albin (John Paul Albin), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 02:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I gave Mac from Superchunk a drink once when I was bartending. But only cause I thought he was cute.

2 Old 2 N-D (Arthur), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 02:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, I just came back from a hike in Griffith Park and who should be out walking his dog but a shirtless Henry Thomas! He looked kind of hot. We nodded to each other, in that time-honored indie hiker fashion.

Arthur (Arthur), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 02:59 (twenty-three years ago)

i refuse to associate with any band that actually refers to itself as 'indie'

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 02:59 (twenty-three years ago)

who should be out walking his dog but a shirtless Henry Thomas!

As in ET, etc.?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, him.

Arthur (Arthur), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Most cool. Always liked him in Valmont.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:04 (twenty-three years ago)

He was good in Gangs of New York, too. Well, better than Leo.

Arthur (Arthur), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:06 (twenty-three years ago)

We Confess! We Killed John Lennon!

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I once enjoyed, and vaguely danced to, a Baha Men song while at a baseball game. Forgive me.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 03:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I love "vague dancing", just like a friend of mine who just called to tell me had been "vaguely getting it on" with this girl.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 10:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I once followed Thurston Moore through Covent Garden for an entire afternoon after a show at Rough Trade.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I like some Hefner songs.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to have a HUGE crush on Marijne from Salad. And the singer from Prolapse.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I make attempts to own every album by artists that I love. Labels too.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I own everything any full time member of Pavement has so much as whistled on.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Does that include the Gary Young outing? If so, I salute you. "Plant Man" was pretty treacherous stuff.

Brandon Gentry (Brandon Gentry), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I loved Echobelly. There. Now, to buy non-red-lipstick....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I own a green cardigan.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)
