LET ILM DECIDE!

classic. enough silly little fun songs that I'd feel like a real stinker giving them a dud. The video for "Hey Hey You Say" is lots of fun.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:06 (twenty-three years ago)

they are good, I like them.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 21:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I love 'em too. "Way you walk" and "I believe in fate" being my faves.

Michael B, Tuesday, 25 March 2003 22:50 (twenty-three years ago)

The only concrete thing I can recall about them is that there's a song on Buildings and Grounds that just knocks me flat. In true pop fashion, the only part of the song I remember is that in the end it goes "La la la la-la."

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 22:58 (twenty-three years ago)

i only have the first album but it has at least three really good songs on it.. "Passion Play" in particular

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 23:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Helioself is their best album..."starting to be it" is a classic.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 23:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not crazy about Papas Fritas, but their song "Sing About Me" is a classic. That song is pop rock joy.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 25 March 2003 23:41 (twenty-three years ago)

'TV Movies ' and 'lame to be'
enough to make them CLASSIC

panico (panico), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 00:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Pseudo-classic. They've only put out 3 albums and aren't especially active. However, for pure pop bliss they are outstanding. Tons o' fun.

Chris Davis (Chris Davis), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 01:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm. The only thing I remember is that they were v. popular among a certain segment of the WUTK staff for a while. And I didn't play them any more than I absolutely had to. But then again I disagreed with most folks at the time about nearly everything. As I do today. Since the majority seems to be in favor of 'Classic' I will have to say 'dud' and base that conclusion entirely off the fac that everybody who used to like them wasn't as much fun as the people who thought they were stupid, who were generally barrels of misbegotten fun waiting to happen.

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 01:57 (twenty-three years ago)

CLASSIC! I love Papas Fritas. They were one of the groups that are responsible for getting me into indiepop. I like the songs that Shivika [sp?] sing.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 05:48 (twenty-three years ago)

The first album is classic, esp. for the beautifully flat production. The second one has some ok songs, but mostly dud. They started taking themselves seriously. Haven't heard after that.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

i like small rooms
la la la la la la la la laaaaah...

they make great pop songs.

otto, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

The video for Hey Hey You Say was instrumental in my discovery of indiepop, in that a co-worker said, "hey you like that? let me make you a mixtape." Classic.

marianna, Friday, 28 March 2003 09:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I have only heard two tracks by them, on a CD single ages ago, but I thought they were brilliant. I must look them out when I get back to Edinburgh tomorrow and play them.

alext (alext), Friday, 28 March 2003 10:03 (twenty-three years ago)

eight years pass...

huh my post from eight years ago otm. their first album is a stone-cold classic and has classic DIY production that sounds DIY but not in a gritty, hissy way but a very clean, very dry/flat way - i don't know why it works but it does. i wonder what these dudes are up to these days.

Wikipedia sez:

In May 2011 Asthana, Goddess, and Gendel reunited for festival appearances in Belgium, France, and Spain (with Samantha Wood Goddess, Tony's wife and Shivika's college roommate, on keyboards), plus two gigs in the Boston area. Four months later they taped an episode of Yo Gabba Gabba! for the show's fourth season.

Hope they do more US shows.

Let A Man Come In And Do The Cop Porn (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 20 January 2012 20:57 (fourteen years ago)

i saw them circa helioself at the black cat; asthana, instead of using a drum throne, sat on the edge of the drum riser with her drums around her.

i think the word i want for the production of the s/t is "intimate"

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 20 January 2012 21:26 (fourteen years ago)

I almost saw them; I found out they had played a block from my apartment the day after. I definitely dig the production; it sounds (and is, iirc) home-recorded, to a degree, but it doesn't call attention to itself as such. It's like Rumors on a budget.

iirc there's a picture in the cd booklet of them recording cello on a cassette 4-track. it doesn't sound like a 4-track album though.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 20 January 2012 21:29 (fourteen years ago)

They were very good live, iirc.

Seriously, who votes for Drake? (Nicole), Friday, 20 January 2012 21:42 (fourteen years ago)

'way you walk' is 1 of my all time fav songs w/o any question

johnny crunch, Friday, 20 January 2012 22:23 (fourteen years ago)

i remember reading a quote where they said their goal was to sound like fleetwood mac on record and the replacements live.

i hear a lot of connections between them and spoon. mainly some of the production and the voices

tylerw, Wednesday, 23 December 2015 21:37 (ten years ago)

Thanks for these liinks schwantz - a fun read today. A buddy of mine worked for Minty Fresh & got me turned on to 'em - they were great when they passed through Chicago. Total classic.

BlackIronPrison, Wednesday, 23 December 2015 22:01 (ten years ago)

I think I have a copy of their first cassette somewhere in my garage. I'll try and dig it up.
