I'm interested in both the Nuyorican boogaloo & shingaling Latin Soul stuff - like Joe Cuba, Ricardo Rey, etc. and then the more wild and wooly L.A. garagey stuff like Thee Midnighters, The Premiers and Cannibal and The Headhunters (check out the fantastic "East Side Sound" comps on Dionysus)...

anybody got any other suggestions?

I'd like to hear more of this myself. Not very familiar. When I start buying Joe Cuba CDs, I will probably begin with those that feature the singer Cheo Feliciano, since I know he's good and I like the one or two songs I've heard that he sang with the Joe Cuba Sextet (I think it was a sextet, something like that).

I guess Joe Bataan's Salsoul is obvious? That might be 70's though.

Basically, I don't know anything about this topic, but I can't stay away from the thread. Check out the Descarga.com web-site for more information on Latin music generally. (Even if you don't buy from them, the site might be able to provide a useful list of artists in this category.)

love thee Midnighters. Great band. "Jump, Jive and Harmonize"! There's an interesting chapter on them in Richie Unterberger's "Urban Spacemen and Wayfaring Strangers" book.

On the boogaloo side, there are a bunch of new comps on Harmless records (a division of Demon, as it says on the label). I have one called "Bigbadboogaloo", which is good. Joe Cuba, Ray Barretto, lots of good fun. Not on that record, but my favourite tune, is Bobby Valentin's "You Got Big Feet". great funky stuff, in many senses.

I've been looking for a Village Callers LP for ages...they've been comped with "Hector," but I once heard a version of "I Don't Need No Doctor" that was utterly blazing, just great.

i recently got the "back to peru" 2lp, which i highly recommend. it covers underground music from '64-'74, heavy on the psychyfunky stuff.

well actually the whole site itself, not just that page (http://www.wildsscene.com/music/). as i've described before, i'm totally into other's cultures' takes on western music (rock, jazz, funk) and vice versa. the brazilian section of that site could use a little work
