LONDON (Billboard) - Madonna (news - web sites)'s "American Life" (Maverick/Warner Bros.)
powered to No. 1 on the U.K. album chart Sunday.

It's the artist's eighth No. 1 album in Britain, a string that began
when "Like a Virgin" hit the top in September 1985.

Another American veteran with an even longer chart span also
returned to the U.K. chart. Now signed to Universal's German
company, Meat Loaf debuted at No. 4 in the U.K. with "Couldn't
Have Said It Better," his first new studio album since late 1995's
"Welcome to the Neighborhood." That set reached No. 3; "Better" is
Loaf's ninth top-10 U.K. chart album in total.

Are you ridiculing the fact that her album is at no. 1? Or the fact that Reuters chose to report on her success along with Meatloaf's? I don't get it.

horace has issues

the fact that Reuters chose to report on her success along with Meatloaf's, of course.

though it is quite interesting/funny (to me) that Americans don't seem to care half as much about her new alb.
But really, that's where Madge's REAL relevance currency is right now, just above Meat Loaf. Only he's in better movies.

Horace likes to save his onions for later.
Horace likes to save his opinions for later.

:p

If you can photshop Madonna-qua-Meat Loaf, I would idolize you forever and always take your side, no matter how asinine your opinion may be.

Quick, Dominique! Say something really dumb before the magic wears off...

her "American Life" rap reminds me of Weird Al Yankovic's flow on "Amish Paradise"

Al (sitcom), Monday, 28 April 2003 18:58 (twenty-three years ago)

oops, it should be noted that my laughing at her not getting attention in the USA is pre-emptive. turns out the album don't come out till next week here.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 28 April 2003 18:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate to say it, but it came out in the US on April 22. Yes, I bought it. As far as getting attention, well she is being interviewed in a fairly-hyped special tomorrow night.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 28 April 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

And as some may have observed, I have transformed into an enormous Madonna fan. Who would have guessed?

Sean (Sean), Monday, 28 April 2003 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

whatever, disregard anything I say about madonna as pure spite.
if not for her, I could have married the Princess Bride.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 28 April 2003 19:52 (twenty-three years ago)

The album really confuses me. Is it a suite or a really long extended single or a musical or an opera or 'Topographic Oceans' or a collection of variations on a theme from the Bee Gees' "Words"? I'm perplexed. Honestly. I keep thinking I'm hearing some import promo versh, wondering if it's really an album.

...what number doid the album debut at in the States?

It's a great record - especially the sublime 'Nothing Fails' which SO should have been the first single.

russ t, Thursday, 1 May 2003 11:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Yep. Had "nothing fails" come out first, people would probably be expecting the album to be good. Fuck it, it's good, but it helps if you skip the title track. Really strong second half, some songs that are up there with her best non-dance-pop singles. "Easy Ride" gives me the same chills I've not had from Madonna since "Take A Bow" or "Bad Girl".

It is possible to save an album after a first single's poor reception -- if the label works fast and gets another one out there, but in Madonna's case, it seems the big splash made by the "American Life" video kerfuffle (to say nothing about the much-debated "meaning"/piety/hypocrisy of the lyrics) has already made up lots of folks' minds (perhaps those who wanted the album to tank without having heard a note off of it in the first place). The critics haven't been wildly enthused either, it seems.

...does anyone read reviews any more, though? I always find them tragic - bad journos/failed musicians - never a good mix.
If a 'reviewer' says an album's crap, I almost know I'm going to like it.

russ t, Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:19 (twenty-three years ago)

dq is OTM. i quite like it for these very reasons. some of the UK monthlies are now weighing in with +ve (ish) reviews

zebedee (zebedee), Thursday, 1 May 2003 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought Ben Ratliff's review in Rolling Stone was quite good.
