but blueski the credits are there because those people put in hours contributing materially to the thing you just saw (or worse, are about to see) - maybe thank yous appear there ("thanks to the Vancouver Chamber of Commerce") and I guess they'd fall in the range of Skinner's opproborium but shit dude, the tape op should get his name in!

naw film credits and album credits are totally different, the acknowledgement section of the film is usually a three-second screen thanking the residents of whatever town got colonized by actor- and producer-types while the thing got shot, and a few cash sources

album credits, though, esp. rap credits (eighties metal set the standard here, though, it must be allowed): anybody who ever smiled at the guy writing the credits gets a "wassup!"

The reason they have credits detailing everything in films is so the people who actually put some damn effort into making the film get some recognition, rather than "This film was made solely by Kate Hudson and F Murray Abraham, with no help from anyone unglamourous"

YES it has to do with union regulation and NEWS FLASH I think those particular union regulations are a good thing, otherwise "Candy" who actually made sure the cigarette was the right length on take #32 among 1,000,000,000,000,000 other things she was doing wouldn't be able to linger in the theater with her family and see her name up there. Nobody would do thankless shit like that otherwise. blueski I believe you would be free to leave the theater before that point. Agree wholeheartedly though with lameness of shout-outs to God and also agree with likening any sort of artistic production to carpentry, keeps em humble you know, but remember it's also a bit like sports, where every corn-husker has to big-up the Big Man upstairs and all manner of everything else too because let's face it, the luck involved with that level of acclaim is staggering, it's only natural that people should look outside themselves for the reasons why.

Ok, you know what bothers me MUCH, much more than shout-outs in liner notes? The trend (comparatively recent, if I'm not mistaken) of putting feedback from famous DJs into one-sheets and press releases. It goes like this: Joe Jazzbo and the Nujazz Fuxors send white labels to Gilles, Pete Tong, Rainer Truby, etc.; the jocks (or their interns) send back an awe-inspiring fax to the tune of "Wicked choon, m8! Sorted!" (translation: I don't care, but I have to say something so you'll keep sending me this shit, because what is a DJ's role in life if not to get free shit); the eager-beaver label dutifully reprints said blurbs in the one-sheets in hopes of having gullible reviewers wordwide say something about "Played out by everyone from Gilles Peterson to Rainer Truby!"

I suppose this isn't much different than the mutual back-patting that goes into book blurbs, but somehow the process seems so much more circular. Or maybe I'm just tired of seeing this particular crew of DJs cited as the be-all and end-all of tastemaking. In any case, it should end now.
